Topic: finger pickin

Im moving into the finger picking stage. Anybody have any advice? Right now I am Just picking out strings that sound good on each chord and alternating between the e and a for the base line. No real pattern.

WHAT TO DO???

Re: finger pickin

Re: finger pickin

I will Thanks!!

Re: finger pickin

Practice arpeggio lessons a lot and soon you will notice a difference. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

Re: finger pickin

THANK YOU!!!THANK YOU!!!

I did not even know arpeggios existed. Looked them up and printed some out.

Are there arpeggio charts? (like chord charts)

Re: finger pickin

I know this thread is about picking, but I'm not sure what they Bellemy Bros. do.

Have you seen any video's of them when they play their song, "Let your love flow"? What that is some bizarre hand movements.

Re: finger pickin

Blackbird and Here comes the sun are great songs to start off basic finger picking as you should probably know what they sound like so with a little trial and error it shouldn't take to long to learn them.

Re: finger pickin

Nice, good choice in songs!

Thank for the help,

Re: finger pickin

The problem there is that Paul McCartney still freely admits that he can't fingerpick 'properly'. What you really ought to do, if you want to do some non-Beatles stuff, is learn to Travis pick- just Google that and there ought to be a few how-to's. Once you can do that and keep your time, you can start to experiment and make it sound much more modern.

Re: finger pickin

You will be glad to know I broke down am starting lessions.

The first thing he put me on was travis picking. Excellent advice! thanks!

Re: finger pickin

I cant finger pick either really.

well I try but I guess it is not "real" finger picking whatever the hell that is meant to be. I tihnk if yer not strumming and using yer fingers and picking it IS finger picking whether correct way or wrong way to some people.

My wife can finger pick fantastically, each finger to a string.

I randomly finger pluck. I hold on the chord and let two or three fingers wander over the strings, and it seems to work most times. I have even been complimented on my style so for this finger picking properly crrap ( sorry to whoever said this by the way) ye can think again.

Because one person can do something much better and make it sound better it doesnt make it proper.

Saying that, lol, if you can get a finger to a string and play the way my wife plays, it does sound much better than me,lol

you dont have to follow in line to everyone, choose your own style and stick wit hit until you master it or at least make it sound passable, if yer not getting paid for playing the guitar then why worry

Ken

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: finger pickin

Too true. I wouldn't say my style of finger picking was technically correct, I can only use index, middle and ring fingers with my pinky supporting my hand on the guitar, but its passable and people who hear it think it sounds good so thats fine by me.

Re: finger pickin

I have rested my little finger for years and tried to use it often, it usually strikes the 1st string before or straight after the ring finger and can be useful for Pull offs, it sometimes is good for a small strum behind a fingerpick that is using the other fingers. Do you use it sometimes?<img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_cool.gif" border=0 alt="Cool">

Re: finger pickin

Check out Damien Jurado. He has one song on here and a few others on sites like this one. His music is well written. Sorta makes me think of the Bach of Travis Picking.

Re: finger pickin

Finger-picking is simple if you OWN the music in you.. if you don't.. DRopp it.

Of course you cam do other things than finger-pick, but that's not the subjeck. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy"> what you can do.. is finding a nice clam song to begin with. First You play it normal as you use to do. Then you try to strum over the strings only with your fingers.

The thumb goes for the base, index-finger goes for the next string and like that it goes on.  The reason that girls often are good of finger-pick.. is because they have nails.. good luck <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

Re: finger pickin

Haven't got round to using it yet but mostly because of lazyness as i am happy with my sound. Maybe will try to use it more in the future!!

Re: finger pickin

<font color="darkblue"></font>Yes, but in the future you are at the same stage as you are now when it comes to picking. A lot of practise means good skills=) I play 5 hours a day.. =P <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">

Re: finger pickin

Five hours a day I wish I had the time!!

Re: finger pickin

<font color="darkblue"></font> hehe..  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">  I see.. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_razz.gif" border=0 alt="Razz"> the point is.. if you like music, then you spend time on it=)

Re: finger pickin

True, true. Unfortunately two small children and work only make it possible for a short amount of practice. I'm lucky that they like listening otherwise I'd probably have less time on the guitar than I do!!

Peace out!

Re: finger pickin

Hi there,

I tend to finger pick a lot and i suggest you start by; if you have not already done so; designating fingers to certain strings. your right hand should be designated so that your thumb only ever plays the top 3 strings (E, A and D) and then your first finger should only ever play the G string, second finger only ever play the B and the third finger only ever play the high E.

I found to avoid using my little finger, i place my little finger down on the guitar all the time, so i am not tempted to use it.

a good exercise of this finger designation with basic fingerpicking is 'house of the rising sun' by the animals. if you e-mail me on <a href="mailto:blindacre&#64;hotmail.com" target="_blank">blindacre&#64;hotmail.com</a>, i'd be happy to send you some finger pick songs, or house of the rising sun chords.

once house of the rising sun is mastered, you should be fairly confident on finger designations on the strings and can move on to a working clawhammer pick (again, e-mail me if you'd like me to send you this pick pattern)

hope this has helped

Chris

Re: finger pickin

Here's a neat little page on Travis picking:

      http://www.guitarland.com/Travis.html

I have a couple of additional questions though:
Am I going to callus up my right hand fingertips with Travis picking?
What are the good/bad points of using fingerpicks?
Finally, what are my choices in fingerpicks?

Thanks,
