Topic: Chord progressions

I gather there is no hard and fast rule when it comes to chord progressions.
For example you could have a I ii iv V (off the top of my head) chord pro.
Basically what I'm saying is you can make up any combination?
As long as it sounds OK?

Re: Chord progressions

There are some threads regarding this with some great explanations (use the search feature on the tool bar). However I like your "If it sounds good, play it" approach. Thinking too much isn't good for anyone. Just play

I used to be disgusted; now I try to be amused.

Re: Chord progressions

Generally speaking, if it sounds OK it's more than likely you're following "the rules" even if you don't know you are.

So know the rules, and you'll sound OK no matter what.  Then you'll know when to break them, too.

-I chord can change to any chord
-II chord can change to any chord except the I chord
-III chord can change to any chord except the I or the VII chords
-IV chord can change to any chord
-V chord can change to any chord except the II chord or the VII chord
-VI chord can change to any chord except the I or the VII chords
-VII chord can change to any chord except the II or IV

Someday we'll win this thing...
