The question I would ask is what has been lost to music through to the use of drugs.
I think the negative out weighs the positive.

Do you mean illegal drugs or all drugs like like, religion, caffeine, nicotine, viagra, etc....?

Its hard to say Zurf and Southpaw. If I'm a listener and taking Viagra I don't think its the drug that would kill me. LOL As an artist and smoking two or three packs a day, I would think its the nicotine that would get me.If I had to listen to religion 24/7 I'm guessing that would kill me and if I had to preach religion 24/7...well thats another story.

Gotta agree with you topdown No question the sixties and seventies was all about the drug movement mixing with music. The music that came out of it would not be the same without it.Crosby,Stills,Nash and Young.I cant imagine life without their classics.Not condoning...joust observing.

lets see..... drugs and music that isnt new musicians were getting stoned as early as 1935 remember billy holiday heroin, louis armstrong mary j (everyday) jene krupa pot,and heres one you proberly didn't know walt disney,cocain and opium ( I often wondered where he came up with  goofy and micky and  mini) charlie parker heroin,lenny bruce died naked on the toilet with a needle in his arm, almost all the early jazz greats were drug addicts so it wasn't just the bands of the sixties that influcenced music with there lifestyle drugs have been around for quiet a while and were used extensively by some of the most renowned artist thru the centuries from composers to artists the list is endless but as was pointed out they did influcence the bands of the sixties and so on and a heavy price was paid by a lot of very talented artist

I know a lot about drugs and the effects because of my profession.
I am convinced that this is a knife cutting on both sides.
It all depends on the person or artist. DRUGS, LEGAL and/or ILLEGAL do change your perception.
Let's take alcohol: is great and you can have a lot of fun if you don't cross the limit. AS LONG AS YOU ARE ABLE TO CONTROL THE DRUGS IN STEAD OF THE DRUGS CONTROLLING YOU there is not a big problem. Starting using drugs is easy, stop using drugs? YOU NEED TO HAVE A STRONG CHARACTER.
Some drugs are extremely addictive. Heroin = BODY & MIND. COKE: Not your body, but your "psyche." ALCOHOL = so normal and social that we don't understand that someone is an alcohol addict.
MY OPINION: DRUGS ARE LIKE AN AMP. They make your feelings 10x stronger. SAD = YOU WILL BECOME MORE SAD, classic case, a woman has a problem, she is very sad, you talk with her and she will start crying, or the typical "uncle" who start dancing on a table on a wedding.
What is the difference between legal and illegal? A VERY THIN LINE. Morphine legal or illegal, the main indication is severe chronical pain. Heroin: still available on prescription. Marihuana or hashish DON'T USE IT WHEN YOU FEEL DEPRESSED or DOWN, you will experience what I mean about amp.

But as already written HOW MANY BRILLIANT ARTISTS ARE GONE? or even they write a great album, and if you read Bill Wyman's book about the Stones THE DRUG SHARKS ARE IMMEDIATELY THERE. Heroin is in use since decades, see RUSSELL, and was very popular in Jazz. Opium dates from 800 AC, morphine was extracted in 1803 and heroin in 1898, coke used for centuries. ALL THESE PRODUCTS STARTED AS MEDICATION. There are no things such as harmless drugs. If you hear the song A WHITER SHADE OF PALE, the lyrics mean nothing and were written under influence.
See what it does to you = AMY WINEHOUSE is THE EXAMPLE. On the other hand more and more artists start to live in a very healthy way, refusing drugs. NOBODY WINS A PRICE USING SUBSTANCES.
