Topic: Banjo for beginner

Hi all, I play a lot of fingerpicking on my guitar but I like Bluegrass so am learning flatpicking as well, I've decided to buy a Banjo, could anyone suggest the best banjo to start off with, I,ve seen a nice 5 string would that be ok for a beginner or should I stick with a six string or get a tenor banjo etc. Any advice will be appreciated.

Cheers

Re: Banjo for beginner

I only play a little banjo, but I can say you should get a banjo that supports using a capo, so it will need the little hooks on the neck for the 5th string that allows you to raise the pitch along with the other four strings that are capo'd.

Also I'd suggest <a href="http://www.musicmoose.org" target="_blank">http://www.musicmoose.org</a> for free video lessons on all bluegrass instruments, including banjo.

Finally, check out <a href="http://www.drbanjo.com" target="_blank">http://www.drbanjo.com</a> and try to get to one of Pete's jam camps or banjo camps.  He does a great job.

Hope that helps,

Terry

Re: Banjo for beginner

my suggestion would be the deering goodtime. ive had mine for 4 years and id never part with it. i play it more than my goldstar or goldtone. cost around 400.00 but its the best.

Re: Banjo for beginner

Goldtone Whyte Lady open back is what I have with the hooks on the neck for using a capo
Lots of volume without resonator. I also play clawhammer style. Have fun and find a good shed LOL  marcalan

I thought ; If I had one idea,
and took it from beginning to end.
I would try another.

Re: Banjo for beginner

Hey Starsailor, I use to play bluegrass music a lot and was always around all the festivals and such. I wanted to start playin the banjo too (but decided to go with bass) and I asked several banjo pickers about "a good banjo for a beginner" and most suggested (as slopicker suggested) a Deering. I looked at several of these banjos in music shops and pawn shops and the price range seemed to be between 3 to 600 buck-a-roos for a mid range banjo. I'd suggest taking an experienced banjo picker along with you when you start shopping, that way you can hear the tone of the instrument as a seasoned player blasts the music shop with...foggy mountain breakdown....:) Anyway good luck with whatever you choose and enjoy the bluegrass.
