Topic: WHO'S responsable that YOU started to play guitar

I think this is a hard one to answer. We pick up with our ears, so many sounds.

I AM NOT ASKING THE WHO IS THE BEST GUITAR PLAYER, but I am so curious to find out if a guitarplayer, young, old I don't care.

BUT I do care for answers like why not playing drums or bassguitar, because I am a guitarman myself, I just know that the rythmsection is definatly underestimated. To play alone: you must be a damn good fingerpicker.

In my case, acoustic (I am NO FINGERPICKER AT ALL), I do remember leo "machinegun" Kottke, who amazed me how beautiful his play sounds. Same category: Neil Young & Bawb Dylan, they both play electric as well, but look it up, Dylan makes a fenomenal song using just 3 accords, also 4 and very rare 5 accords. It is unbelievable what this man does with 3 accords. Everyone knows the song KNOCKIN' ON HEAVEN'S DOOR, you should go 1 step further and listen to the rest of the songs, in wich he plays almost every song with 3 accords, BILLY THE KID, album. Every song exists almost by the grace of 3 basic chords, also they look alike (FILM MUSIC) it is in my eyes the best stuff he made, in a technical way+melody.

Electric: JOHN FOGERTY, simple, but straight from the heart, with CCR. That is the reason why I started to play guitar: FOGERTY  YOUNG  DYLAN <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_cool.gif" border=0 alt="Cool">

Re: WHO'S responsable that YOU started to play guitar

Hi gitaardocphil,

My answer to your question is probably not really what you were looking for as I have to say my parents are responsible.

Christmas 1958 (I was 11) Father Christmas left my brother and I a four string, plastic, Elvis Presley guitar each. It came with an autochord, a plastic device to attach on the fingerboard and press buttons to play the chords (G Em C & D7 I think). No complicated fingering or painful finger at that stage. I remember the songbook that came with it had 'Home On The Range' in it and we drove our parents mad continually playing it. The beauty of it was we were making music with very little effort. Plastic wears and breaks and we moved on, learning properly on six strings but if it were not for that gift I would not be writing to you now.

The attached photo is me, my late father and my brother Colin, with our Elvis guitars, Christmas 1958.

Yes, I was really at the time I asked this questions, because you're 100% right. Family members, certainly in a musical family, can be responsable too.

Thanks, I really forgot to mention this fact.

But it is amazing how other musical groups are influenced, take PROCOL HARUM, I have a recording where, they thank BACH, for "co-writing" and "inspiring" them for the PROCOL music.

When I was seven my dad, who is a huge talent in NYC

(<a href="http://www.myspace.com/saulrubinmusic" target="_blank">http://www.myspace.com/saulrubinmusic</a>)   bought me a beat up nylon string with staples holding it together.  We named it Frankenstein.  With Frank, he bought me alfreds method book and said "learn how to read."  So I did.

Eddie Van Halen; his playing did something to me that no person or thing had ever done. Time would freeze when he busted out one of those freakish solos. Ed set the bar high man, real high.

Give everything but up.
