Topic: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

Otherwise put a capo on your guitar (in standard tuning) at the 5th fret, forget about the two bass strings and what's left (GCEA)is <i>almost</i> uke tuning except for your G is an octave higher on the uke.

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

Way back in the day before electronic tuners the cavemen used to use pitchpipes and tuning forks.  Simple, effective, elegant and no batteries required.  Some music stores and sites still carry these nifty little relics.

Tuning forks are really neat.  Get one for the lowest note of your instrument and then tune the rest of your strings from that tone.  Tuning forks are fun to play with - set it to ringing and then hold the tip of the handle to your resonating chamber - very cool.

Pitch pipes come in versions with just the tones needed for a variety of instruments.  You can get one just for ukuleles.

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

There are several on-line midi uke tuners.  Try ukulele boogaloo at alligator boogaloo.  Also BUSHMAN - a fantastic uke and harp emporium out of New Palestine Indiana sells a uke tuner for around $20.  In the chromatic mode it will tune any string.  But it has a uke setting for C-tuning (soprano, concert, tenor: G-C-E-A).  It's real easy, and since all uke are notorious for getting out of tune quickly, it's a real time savor.  I use it on all my uke - even my D-tuned soprano.

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

The best website for tuning I know of is www.get-tuned.com ..It has a guitar, 12 string guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, uke and bass tuner.  Check it out

I wonder if the old guys back home were just pullin our leg when they told us the way to tune your uke was "My dog has fleas?"
We have Hawaiian neighbors that jam quite a bit in their garage and patio on weekends. Lot of uke playing going on there. I'll see what they have to say and pass it on to you.

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

Just got an email from Suitcase Sam a Ukulele player. Sam says there are four major types of ukuleles, Soprano, Tenor, Concert and Baritone. The Baritone is tuned exactly like the top four strings of a guitar, D,G,B,E. The other uke's use G,C,E,A. Sam plays a baritone uke and uses a guitar tuner to tune his guitar...
I'll still check with the Hawaiian dudes over the weekend.
Later...

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

Baritone uke? yes, tuned same as guitar's 1st 4 strings. DGBE but the G is 1 octave higher. when you get the tune correct. put the words to the notes: "(D)My (G)dog (B)has (E)flees". You will never forget it. Ok.---- have fun!

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

i use the program i found on google called "ap tuner.exe" (WWW.APTUNER.COM) its the best free chromatic tuner for windows i have seen so far. all you need is your computer and a microphone. to tune the ukulele make a new preset for the ukulele (in the menu select "note" then edit note presets), tuning it to "G4, C4, E4, A4" for (c tuning) by creating a new preset and typing it in. then select that note preset you just made

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

Hi All
May I suggest Sheep Entertainment for Uke tuning.
You get a virtual Ukulele which you can play, chords and tabs.
    Worth a look I think.

   Bye, bye for now.

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

Ok this has probably been answered a million times. But, I new here so if this has been said again and again I’m sorry, but here goes again. I bought a new Samick UK70 the one with the gig bag, chord sheet whoopee, and an electric tuner, the tuner wasn't worth too much I took it back, and they said they have had several of them come back, not the Uke its actually pretty good, holds tune, sound great the whole nine yards, the tuner was crap though, they gave me a new clip on tuner for free, well for exchange, any way these clip on do-hickies are pretty cool, mine goes from red to green when in tune, not to mention it has a screen that shows the key, GCEA and a scale to let me know when I’m getting close, highly recommended they only sell on eBay for around $15.00 delivered

Hope this helps

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

yep Rooke,
I always recommend the clip on tuners as well, I think they are great.
And not only do they tune very accurately, because they work on vibrations up the neck to the head, you can talk, sing, whistle shout while tuning, you can even tune it while you have earphones on wit hac dc blasting in yer ear drums,
now how good is that? lol

Ken

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

That is not quite correct, on a baritone uke the strings are tuned just like the highest (in terms of pitch) strings on a guitar (low to high) DGBE.
Most other ukes the strings are tuned (low to high) gCEA with the G string being tuned an octave higher than the the others. This is the "My Dog Has Fleas" tuning in C.
Occasionally, people (myself included) will tune a tenor uke with a lowered G string so that it matched the highest four strings on a guitar with a capo at the 5th fret. This is referred to as C tuning with a reentrant G string.
Some old timers will go for a D tuning which is aDF#B with a raised octave for the A string. This is more common on soprano ukes.

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

I know the site http://www.play-bass.com/online-tuner has a bass tuner where you are able to have custom tunings. If you put the tuning to G, C, E, A I am sure you will be fine, or even the guitar one.

Re: HOW DO I TUNE MY UKE ?

I used sheep-entertainment tuner as per bluetick, then I bought an electric tuner then I got an app for free for my HTC Desire called "Gstrings" which is really good, free version. Its got an "autotune" mode which picks up what you pluck to the nearest note - VERY handy rather than selceting A, tune, G, tune etc etc. Great app, 5*
