Topic: John Lee Hooker

Here is a great video of John Lee Hooker.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BtUQbblCWo&NR=1  Does he play in an open tuning? I don't recognize what chords he's playing. I always thought he played Epiphone Shearatons. This is obviously an Epi, by the headstock, But it only has one cutaway. What guitar is this?

I can't answer your questions, but I love John Lee.  Many of his songs have the same sound as this, so maybe you can look up some of his tabs.

You can see all my video covers on http://www.youtube.com/bensonp1000
I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Hi Craig,

Having listened to this I think it is in normal tuning and an E and A progression with an odd A7 thrown in. The A x02220 (well actually A6 x02222 as he apears to be barring all 4 strings on the second fret but without playing the F# x0222x so it will be A) and A7 x02223. As much of it is picked and not strummed I think that he is not always playing the full chords.

Some one may correct me but that is my opinion.

Re: John Lee Hooker

Could be a Joe Pass {not sure of the spelling} those were single cutaways, semi hollow guitars. Not sure, but thats what it looks like to me.

A musician is someone with too much time on their hands! Thank god I'm a musician!!!

Re: John Lee Hooker

Hi Craig,

Have a gander at this(above)............

And Mr. Hooker (haha, that just sounds funny) is playing in standard 440A open tuning( in the key of E) in this video. I checked it with my pitch PIPE...........

Give everything but up.

Re: John Lee Hooker

John Lee is playing in E with standard tuning but his rhythm is odd.
He got worse as he got older because playing alone too much allows us to develop bad rhythm habits.
I find him dropping or adding beats to measures - especially as he got older.
It wasn't a problem for him but it had to drive his sidemen nuts.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".
Ya'll wanna go down to the Guf?

I love the way he plays though... he just kind of chills and waits, like hes too cool to just come in on time, then out of nowehere an explosion of thumpy electric hammered on goodness. Its actually endearing I think, and blues music in general leaves alot of room to be loose.

Re: John Lee Hooker

I too have noticed him dropping and adding a beat or two.  I forget which song it is but on "the very best of John Lee Hooker" there is one song in which this is completely obvious. I just went back and watched this video again and he's got one of those ultra rare Vox Python guitar straps like  John Lennon had on his original Rickenbacker 330. I love how on most of his songs its just so natural sounding. You can hear his shoe tapping the beat, it always sounds like he's playing an electric guitar unamplified.
