Topic: THE FAIRY GLADE

The Fairy Glade.

By Phill Williams 25/03/09

Before me, a carpet of foxglove, dancing in a sweet scented whisper of a breeze.
Lush and green hang leaves from branches heavy with budding fruit.
While distantly swaying, eyes closed, drinking-in the promise of a glorious summer
She throws back her head, breathing through her very being,
To fill her lungs with the sweetest scent of all...

I, approaching slowly, silently...no quietly
Wishing not to disturb her or the bluebells
The glade is alive with grass hoppers calling
Bees visiting each plant in turn, humming to the sun...
A wisp of cloud; you wont disturb this glorious day
You only enhance, add picturesque beauty to this scene

Away in the corner of the meadow, runs a gentle stream
Trickling over smooth rounded stones, as it has for hundreds of years
It gives an aroma all itself;
Dragon flies, fly
Sticklebacks swim, kingfisher hunt for that elusive trout
It's such a fine day to be walking through the countryside
O! What joy to be blessed by such as this.

Finally; to a gate, wooden, green with age and lichen
Do we do as we did when we were young and climb over?
We decide the gate won't take the strain
So, walking through the gap in the hedge that the cows frequent
We return to the road, looking back at the fairy glade
Which was only a farmers field
But dreams and memories can conjure....anything

Re: THE FAIRY GLADE

This is a memory of a meadow in my home village of Llwynhendy way back in the 50's when my friends and I used to play there. I don't think we appreciated the beauty of the place then. Now it's a housing estate, so it lives on in memory only.

I like this one, Phill. Very descriptive. Well done, wished I lived in England

Re: THE FAIRY GLADE

Great images and atmosphere, Phill. Who was she ?

There can be a real sense of a presence in some of our broad leaf glades. There are places where you really feel there has never been any change in the world. As a kid, there was one place we called "the silent" which was dark, but warm, and there were times, when the wind blew and the leaves swept in waves, that you strained to hear a voice. For me, the legends of fairies always included a threat that the creature would turn malevolent.

Oh - and the Silent is still there. I must go back . . .

Hi Phill,

You know when i read poems like this and daddycools, i so wish i could smell the air
that accompanies these images. I for one remember " Dylans Farm " where i lived,
there was always a scent of Lilac, Apple blossom, in season and turf fire in the air.

Lovely Poem Phill.

Thank You"

Re: THE FAIRY GLADE

thanks everyone,

now you mention it helena, the smell or scent of new mown grass always gets me, the smell of leather on willow, [cricket bat and cork ball] fabric softner on work clothes, fresh bed sheets after a hot bath or shower...i'd better not go on...

thanks russ, whimsical eh?

hi alan, i never thought of fairies as malevolent, just as those pretty little things with gossamer wings...yes i would go back to the silent if i was you and see if the place lives up to the memory.

hi selso, sorry i didnt mean to slap your wrist, or pull you up, but wales is wales, england is england and ne'er the twain shall meet, except on the rugby pitch, where we beat 'em 2 years running, [they did beat us before that] but all that matters is the last game...and one day we might even beat ireland...we live in hope

"hi alan, i never thought of fairies as malevolent"

Guess I'm thinking about Irish Fairies - the little people. A bit like yer elf woman in Lord of the rings when she puts the ring on.
