Topic: Uke Question, Could use some advise...

I play a Tenor Ukulele with C tuning. Many of the songs I would like to play listed here, after transposing to C tuning, don't sound right. Is anyone else running into this or is it my inexperience. Would appreciate any advise on how to work with the songs to make them sound right.

Re: Uke Question, Could use some advise...

I play a tenor ukulele with a low G-string, which like more than a high G. I haven't had any problems.

Toney my man, That is the best uke tool I've ever seen!! I had to give this thread a bump back to the top and say thanks!! Anybody out there that plays the uke or is trying to learn it NEEDS to visit this site! The play along feature is what really makes it! A huge list of songs for the uke with audio and interactive display that carries you through the lyrics, chords and all the changes for them!! WOW! Thanks again! Can ya tell I liked it lol  -Pix

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

I play both ukulele and guitar and I find that some types of songs sound better on the ukulele and other types of songs sound better on the guitar. For example Herman's Hermits "Mrs Brown You Have a Lovely Daughter" sounds great on the uke but not so good on the guitar. Also you have to consider the right key for the song. Some songs have to be played in the appropriate key to sound decent.

Part of what makes a song sound "right" is the relation of the chords to each other on the instrument - did the artist move UP or DOWN the scale to reach a certain pitch? If you only know one position for each chord, you might not be able to duplicate the original "sound" in any key! Try playing the songs in the original keys, and listen to the recording you are trying to get the "feel" of - what did the artist do? Sometimes a "sound" is dependent on which note is at the top or bottom of the chord, as well as the direction the progression takes.
