Topic: Anyone play poker??

Just wondering if anyone else here played poker online? I play (free poker) at Full Tilt as SixStringSurf, and I just thought it'd be cool to get a game of chordians going if anyone else played there smile Anyone game? -Pix

[b][color=#FF0000]If your brain is part of the process, you're missing it. You should play like a drowning man, struggling to reach shore. If you can trap that feeling, then you have something.

Re: Anyone play poker??

I still play free poker.
Not on tilt place though. I play it on coral for free and also on 888.com that site is really good for free poker and free roulette.

I have not played for real money in a while.
I started with playing black jack. my first day I creditted £10 in my account and I was up to about £480 after two hours then I lost a bit and banked £350 or thereabouts. Then it was onto poker, I lost a bit as I was just starting so I decided to start playing practice games for free until I mastered it. I have won quite a bit as well as lost a bit but all in I would say I am still up.

I stopped playing for real money when I saw a program on tv showing how people could cheat online by the use of a program that worked out the percentages straight away of what chance they had of winning. It made it no point in playing as playing against a computer would be quite hard. It turns a game into a game of luck instead of skill.

Texas hold em is a superb game and very addictive. I sometimes play on facebook too but mostly I am addicted to scramble and scrabble on that, as well as my virtual farm FARMVILLE. yes I am very sad.

Re: Anyone play poker??

I played for money a long time ago.  I got pretty good and regularly came out ahead and started to think I was pretty good.  Then I had my old bachelor uncle sit in on a game and he had us all cleaned out in about a half hour leaving us to scratch our heads and wonder what happened.  He gave us all our money back (which we refused to accept).  He just wanted a little fun and taught us all a lesson in the bargain.

Then I had another uncle who was a professional gambler teach me a bit about the game and I started to come out ahead more often.  Never did take to his tricks with double dealing and bottom dealing and such.  Never used hold out cards.  I always played honest, and won or lost honestly.  But it was useful to be able to figure out when someone else was cheating.

I've never played on-line.  Would rather sit at a campfire and play some nickel ante with you.

But not Texas Hold-Em please.  I can't learn another language just now.  Five card stud, five card draw, and seven card stud if we feel the need to get fancy.  Baseball, Chicago Roundabout, Firehouse, Texas Hold-Em, all the various games have no appeal to me.  Good old poker.  My favorite is seven card stud (which is basically Texas Hold-Em without the weird language, crazy betting rules, or television cameras).

Re: Anyone play poker??

I used to get together with several high school buddies for a monthly game. I'm with Zurf, 5 card stud, draw, 7 card stud, in all variations, a little acey-duecey, but 5 card draw, jacks or better open, trips to win was always my favorite. I've never played on-line, and Texas hold-em - not for me.

It was always a great time, not many folks have a group of friends they've known for 25+ years and still get together on a regular basis. The games are in Raleigh (NC) and the 2 hour drive led me to frequent them less often. The last game I went to was about 6 months ago, it's about time to plan the next one.

Rule No. 1 - If it sounds good - it is good!

Poker ??
We're not , never have been and never will be gamblers ... I guess if you like the game , then it's good if you can play for free ... We just know too many people who if they get an extra hundred bucks , they have to run to the casino ... Three of my younger sisters are really into it , and none of them can afford it ... One of them , when her and her husband go , ( which is about once a week ) , always take their credit cards along , L O L ... Then they wonder why they're not getting anywhere finacially ...
About once a year , if my wife and I are completely bored on a winter Sunday , we'll run up to the casino that's thirty two miles away ... We'll each throw twenty bucks away on the slots and when we're done , we go have buffet lunch ( which is worth the trip alone ) and go home ...
I guess we figure that we work too hard for our money to throw it away like some folks do ... Like they say , if it was a winning game , the casino would'nt be there , L O L ... My idea of gambling is spending a stamp on a Publishers Clearing House entry , L O L ...

Re: Anyone play poker??

Poker is gambling of sorts, but there's a great deal of skill involved.  Good people win frequently.  The great-uncle I mentioned before made a career of it.  In the early days of Vegas - so he wasn't just playing tin horns.  He was playing other professional gamblers.  Highly skilled game.  Now slots are a gamble!!!  They're a losing game for nearly every one, but every once in a while there's a winner.  There's no skill involved at all.  Just put in your money and watch it go away.  Slots players are gambling that they can be that one winner from out of thousands of players.  In poker, it's fairly easy to tell within a few hands if you're at the right table or whether you're playing with folks who don't know the game, or whether you're totally outclassed.  In either of the latter cases, cash in and go home.  An inexperienced table will cost you hands by making dumb plays.  At an outclassed table, your seed money will be gone in an hour or less, I don't care how much it was.  Unless it's Texas Hold'Em because then you've already put your money in the bank and you don't get it back if you leave so you can't benefit by quitting and you can't lose any more unless you buy into a new game.  But if you want to learn poker, you have to lose some money sitting at the outclassed table to have your skills challenged and stretched.  It's like tennis - play with someone a little bit better than you are from time to time to improve your game.  In poker, consider the losses to be the cost of a lesson.

Re: Anyone play poker??

Yikes, I got into a poker game some 30 years ago and lost my whole paycheck, that was my very last game of poker. Now if your talking Harness Racing I'm in. We have a track about 2 hours from here [wish it was closer] and about six times a summer I go and have a blast betting on the horses. I take a betting limit and most times I come home with winnings. It really is a fun afternoon out with the misses. That's about the full extent of this cat's gambling.

Re: Anyone play poker??

We used to play a game called leau (I think that is how to spell it) it is kind of a cross between poker and ueker. It's been so long I can't remember how it's played. We used to get together a least once a month for some real good games but life got in the way and haven't played for ages. I miss those days...they were fun for sure. As for online poker, I don't trust computers/companies enough to chance my hard earned cash to strangers, maybe down the road. smile
