Topic: how long you,s been playing?

ive been playin about 6 months or so,im not the best and i dunno maybe its the guitar i have .it just dosent sound nice as i think it should i dunno if its the plak im using or wheather im playing it totally shit.any tips or advice???

Re: how long you,s been playing?

what type of guitar decky ? i been playing for a good few years,, and its unlikely your plecky has anythin to do with it. i play both accoustic and electric , and find a softer plectrum ideal for the accoustic stuff.. with something a little firmer for those power chords on the electric.. but really can use either or.it depends on how your using it too. i think the guitar may be the fault. hope this helps and all the best.

Re: how long you,s been playing?

Hi, IAm playing about a year, till to day I CAN`T play with plecs: the rigt hand has long nails- thats are my plecs. With plecs the sound is horridly, I´ll never learn it. Sometimes I use a fingerpic for the thumb, nice sound.

Re: how long you,s been playing?

well its kinda odd since im moderator here but i only picked up guitar 4 months ago at christmas lol

but i think ive progressed rather fast

Re: how long you,s been playing?

Re: how long you,s been playing?

this is a great idea for you. i think if you have an insight into the guitar it will help the site improve even more,, good luck with it and happy strumming.///// we are the mods,, we are the mods,, we are ,we are,, we are the mods,, //// ( you need to start learning 60's music )

Re: how long you,s been playing?

Hi Ihave been playing for 2yrs & I play a Yamaha...The pk I like is 70 to 75mm ...this makes the sound richer.. a good and fresh set of strings help as well... a stiff pk will make your strings sound flat... ....lkelly

Re: how long you,s been playing?

This may sound a bit daft but if you are thinking your guitar sounds naff then try recording yourself playing. Sometimes you don't hear things the same when you are playing as someone listening. Give it a go. I did and discovered it still sounded naff but figured out it was down to the way I was actually holding my plecky.

Sounds a tad better now but still a long way to go.

Practice practice practice.

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: how long you,s been playing?

Yes, thats was i&#180;ve done too: if you play plecs, sounds a little bit swabbing, but the others hear only the sound. If I record my playing, i can correct the style and tempo.

Re: how long you,s been playing?

well...i suggest you get some brand new strings and have a guitar shop put them on for ya and tune it for ya and see if just strumming it makes a difference in tone or sound....and have a avvid guitarst play it a lill bit to see if it sounds good or not

Re: how long you,s been playing?

cheers ppl...i actually bought a new set of strings n..put them on myself n tuned it myself there n shes sounding alot betterplus ive tryed to stop using the plac so much ....learnin a lovely wee tune at the mo, "shes always a woman to me".....(billy joel) ...but shes hard to play..hahah but i like a challenge!!!!

keep it real ppl!<img src="index.php?t=getfile&id=41&private=0" border=0 alt="index.php?t=getfile&id=41&private=0">

Re: how long you,s been playing?

I'm really new to guitar -- can someone tell me what a plectum, plecky, plec is???  Doesn't seem to be another word for pick, so what the h is a plecky?  And how much in inches is 70mm?

Re: how long you,s been playing?

They ARE refering to a pick, and it's 0.70 mm.

I use an even thinner pick (0.46mm), or no pick at all.

I think the most important thing in achieving a good sound, is to tune a guitar as best as you can. If a guitar is just a little out of tune, it'll sound like crap. A good electronic tuner is the best investment you will make, and it's not expensive ($20-$40).

Re: how long you,s been playing?

I am really new (5 weeks) Is there a trick to reaching all the chords? (short stubby fingers and 50 year old woman).

Also is there a good book/tutorial out about strumming and picking?

I have some serious calluses too, is that normal?

I am taking lessons but...so many questions....help!

Re: how long you,s been playing?

I'm a little newer than you (1 week) and a little older (57 year old man).  I played wind instruments in my teens and twenties but never a guitar before.  My son is a very good professional musician (alto sax) and he gave me a new guitar for my birthday.  Best gift I ever got.  I figure that if my son became an excellent musician in only ten years, I can certainly do the same.

I think the short fingers problem is just a matter of hard work and practise.  I've seen lots of guitar players who do quite well with short fingers.  Good luck to us all.

Re: how long you,s been playing?

Even though I wouldn't consider myself very good, I can vouch for the fact that practice over time will make those short stubs perform.  On the other hand (not to be comical) after four years of playing (I started as well at 57) there are chords that I know I never will make (I don't even try for anything beyond a three fret spread).  But there is often a chord variation that can be substituted and what's the difference anyway?  I just play for enjoyment.  Regarding lessons etc.... I read a great review here on Chordie about the package of CDs, DVDs and book called "Learn and Master Guitar" so after four years of doing it all on my own, I forked out the $200 (on special btw) and am going to give it a try.  I'm just now waiting for delivery.  I will report back re. my thoughts on this -- the review called it the cream of the crop or something like that of all on-line, or CD/DVD tutorials (for $200 bills, it better be).  Enjoy your playing folks.

Re: how long you,s been playing?

I guess time will tell, but I don't think there is an equivalent substitute for a real live person as a teacher (as long as you get the right one).  You can get a lot of lesson time for $200.

Re: how long you,s been playing?

Interesting that your perspective is that $200 will get you alot of personal lesson time, while I thought just the opposite -- here where I live (Auburn, CA) I can get 4 1/2hr lessons a month for $100.  With this set of CDs etc I can refer back to them forever -- they also say there is a lifetime hotline type of thing for specific questions not covered etc. -- kindof like what we can do on this site.  What intrigued me most about this packaged lesson thing is the CDs have lots of songs (forget how many they say) to play along with once you've learned them via the lesson plan.  I don't have much opportunity to play with other people (I'd probably be too scared and screw up anyway), so I thought this might be fun to do.  Will see.

Re: how long you,s been playing?

you don't need a live teacher I've only been playing for 6 years and i do just fine. you just have to have the right resources like www.looknohands.com simple chord dictionary had me playing my first song day one then find a site that explains how to read tab and in a month i knew everything i needed to know now im workin on a major CD project in Nashville so yea live teachers are overrated if you really want to learn you will

Re: how long you,s been playing?

thanks all, it is all helpful.  I am finding that there are alot of subs for chords i can't reach.  I do like my teacher but he is young and kinda unfocused.  But still good to have some one correct my form etc.  I also played flute as a teen and can read music still (sort of).  I found a site that is giving basic strumming patterns.  good for me a beginner.  It will be a loooooong time till i can get close to a Joni Mitchell pattern!  High hopes

Re: how long you,s been playing?

Hello Everyone,

pqcraig, I would like to know the site for the strumming patterns. If you could get me this info I would be greatly thankful.

Play on everyone.

Re: how long you,s been playing?

Re: how long you,s been playing?

I have the Learn and Master the guitar course... it is exactly that, a course... I am an intermediate player, been playing about 10 years...  The course is comprehensive and not for the faint of heart... it will take a year to cover all of the material and "master" it...   The lessons are easy to follow and the Jam sessions on the disks are helpful in teaching you to work and play well with others..   I am about 40% through it after about 10 weeks...  It will take a year to finish...  I can already notice a major improvement in my playing, and I really haven't covered anything I didn't already know how to play, but rather I didn't know what it was I was playing half the time...  Learning to read music has been the biggest challenge
