Luckily they have good taste.

I wish I like many other had started playing years ago.

Gave in and bought a Walden 12 string a couple of years ago (Sheryl Crowe made me do it). I use it a lot when jamming. Its one of my guarded things next to my banjo. Don't put off buying an instrument like a 12 string, you don't know what you're missing.

I've heard so many players say the transition was hard. I used to play in the kitchen standing up while dinner was cooking. Its a mental block like bar chords. Practice practice practice.

Shawn Colvin and Sheryl Crowe inspired me. I still blame Sheryl Crowe for my 12 string.

44 years old here. New Zealand. Been playing for about 10 years. Just started banjo about 12 months ago and am learning keyboard. Finally took the leap to learn to read music. I wish I had done it years ago. I learnt to play guitar from DVDs. A guy called Justin Moss who runs fingers of fire guitar school in Hamilton New Zealand puts out double DVD sets with about 6 hours of tutition for about $30 a set. .  I play most nights for 1 - 2 hours absolutely addicted.  Who needs a TV. lol

My first song was Country Roads by John Denver. I must have played it 5 million times by now.

Bought a $100 guitar. Ordered a DVD for $30 off a trading site. Then bought my son a guitar and we learnt together.
Now have 6 guitars and a banjo. I still get the real buzz from playing I did the first day. That feeling you get when you've just bought something really cool and can't wait to get home and try it out.

Why is it when you a real urge to play and don't have a lot of time is there always a broken string on your guitar.
And why oh why does the D string always go when the local music shop is out.

43 here. Live in New Zealand.
Been playing about 5 years. Yes still a puppy.
6 guitars and a banjo here.
My aim is to sit in my backyard and play when I retire.
I had a mid life crisis about not playing and decided to get off my butt and learn. I'm so pleased I did.
I still think you can't tell someone who doesn't play how great it makes you feel to play.
It just takes you somewhere.
I've even educated the new girlfriend to give me space when I'm playing.

I can't read music. I've played for 5 years or so.
I play mostly from tab or ear.
I would dearly love to learn but find I have very little time to play let alone learn.
I always picture myself retired in my backyard playing my guitar.
Its one of the things that really brings me happiness.

Ur Irish Rose Chordie is like an obsession after a while. Full of great people and a lot of help.
You made me laugh about the sore fingers.
I remember it vividly.
Still I got past it and really enjoy it now.
I hope chordie can help you as much as it has helped me.

I remember the days of trying to learn the F and B. The frustration  oh the frustration. But one day it just clicked like managing to strum down and up.

Topdown thanks heaps for the link.
Like the thread starter I have just got a banjo and am learning to play. I can play guitar fine but really want to learn the banjo. (and yes I know all the jokes)
Its something I would to sit out the back of my house when I retire and play.

I've played for about 6 years. I do not have hearing aids. I can play barre chords fine but I still use a electronic tuner for tuning. The amount of guitarists I have seen tune their guitar to their tuning and then proceeded to play out of tune has absolutely amazed me. Get a guitarist learner to average and check their tuning with an elctronic tuner. Its a revelation. Most are out on a couple of strings. And they have played like that for years.

New Zealand here. north island, 43 years. Been playing maybe 5 years or so and still get that I HAVE to play feeling. Its like a rush still. I love my guitars and am learning banjo at the moment.
Didn't listen to music for a few years till I started playing. Playing really takes you somewhere.
But its something a person that doesn't play can understand I think.
I love it.
I'm hooked for life.

Sorry just saw this.

I love my 12 string (Walden).  Its not the most expensive guitar but it is an awesome toy. I usually play it about every 2 weeks and its like that fixation of just wanting to jam.
It takes you somewhere.

mikeward100 I know its frustrating and really did my head in trying to do both. An easy song piece of cake but quick chord or note transitition and I really lost it. Still I persevered and it paid off. Its a bit like when I wanted to strum up as well as down, I thought it was going to be impossible then overnight one night I just got it. I think theres a lot in musical instruments like that.

Hi

My name is Neil

I live in New Zealand. Amazing that a lot of nearly 40 people here. That about sums it up for me. I wanted to learn by the time i retired. I love playing. Its good for the soul and can save any bad day. Puts a spring in your step and rekindles your love of music.

I was sitting there playing with Chordie on my screen happy as anything and ran across a few pages with Lyrics only. I love Chordie.com but please no more Lyric posts. It spoils it for the players.

Have you tried getting an experienced player

to have a turn on it. Then you'll know if its

the guitar or you. Just a thought.
