"Silverstein" is a Canadian post-hardcore/screamo band from Burlington, Ontario of debatable sub-genre. The band was formed in 2000 in what they facetiously called in a press bio "an attempt to exploit the marketability of hardcore and emo". While they do ape many elements of these genres, some street team promoters place them in the "emocore" genre.
The band formed in June of 2000 as a side-project for most of the original members, who were all in other local bands at the time. They recorded their first demo two months later, with various players, including lead vocalist Shane Told, filling in bass parts, as they did not have a regular bassist at the time. The demo would be pressed and released locally in August of that year as the EP ''Summer's Stellar Gaze''.
After a couple of personnel changes, the band acquired a permanent bassist in Billy Hamilton, a local fan who learned of the band's need for a permanent bassist on 'The 905 Board' an internet message board centred around the music of the Southern Ontario, 905 area code.
