Please do not take this the wrong way as I am a guitar noob myself.

I am trying to learn theory as well as many of my favorite songs. I am doing this not because I want to write but because I have a need to know what I am doing as I am doing it. I am now in the process of learning the notes on the fretboard as well as learning to read music. I have found that if I try shortcuts I end up shortchanging myself.

I am doing this exercise when I practice: I start on the low E and as I move my fingers down the fretboard on the string I name the notes: (open) E, F, (F)minor, G, (G) Minor, A, etc...I will do this with all the strings down to the 12th fret, while alternate picking the strings to help with my picking skills. I will also look at a chord or picture a chord and determine what notes are played in that chord. This is helping me to learn where I am on the fretboard and has the added advantage of not defacing my fretboard with adhesive.

Just a thought and good luck in your endeavor!

Dudes - this thread is well over 3 years old and the OP hasn't posted since 2007. My guess is that he found the song he was looking for. Lets let the thread die.

Face Palm....I did not even notice the original posting date. I was talking to a wall!

Oh, yeah, right you are CJ-5. Top dollar.  I probably should have bought something from a Chinese outfit - I would have at least known the quality I was getting.  Actually, I shouldn't knock the Chinese.  I have an acoustic built there, and its every bit as good as any low end you'd get at a music store...though I got mine free, and free stuff that works is damn good at any price ! haha

@BunBun - if your low on cash, you're right to stick with the computer.  You already probably pay a good penny for internet access.  Still good DVD products are worth it.  You might check your local library too.  Many have "self help" DVDs that they loan out.  Worth checking anyway.
The only thing I would recommend (and I'll confess, I teach guitar as a side-living) is go get Jamie Andrea's Guitar Principles of Correct Practice book.  I think she has a dvd as well, but all I have it the book, and its fine if money is tight.  I got my copy over 10 yrs ago (before DVDs) and still consistently refer to it, and I sprinkle in her concepts as I teach.  The key, if you really do what she puts forth, is it will teach you how to teach yourself.  Its not rocket science, but she puts it to paper so that when you read it, you say "oh yeah, of course" (ie insert light bulb going on).  Or at least sign up for her newsletter which is free.  Sometimes its a bit ethereal, but I just take what I like and move on.  Google her name and have at it.

Thanks. Right now I am surfing different sites for my edification. I have found one I particularly like and am starting from the beginning. I will look into that book/dvd. Perhaps I can buy it.

Judas Priest's Turbo Lover. For some reason my wife would not go for that as our wedding song...Don't know why...

I appreciate the responses. I, like many, am short of disposable income so I cannot justify paying money for instructional cd's right now. I have found much, if not all, that I need right now on the internet. I feel that in time I will need to pay for instruction as I am sure there will  be something I want to know and will not be able to find it.

I am not passing judgement on any one here but I do wonder why, with all the free info I am finding on the interweb on learning the guitar, why you would pay someone for a dvd set?

Am I missing something? Just asking and wondering.

Probably the best Championship game yet. Auburn's D was on point tonight but Oregon shot themselves in the foot numerous times. I lay it all on Oregon's QB. He made too many bad reads, especially at the goal line, and made too many bad passes. Passes that should have been easy to make. He looked like he was scared all night. Oregon's D did a good job and kept them in the game.

That being said I do not want to take anything away from Auburn. They held Oregon's offense down and overall played a good game.

I still think the SEC is overrated though.

Thanks Guy's,

I'll check out your references. I've been basically learning on my own.  I'm learning how to read music and have been picking up a few things here and there. It's working be very slow. Hopefully I'll be playing full songs before long. I need all the help I can get. I'm looking for something I can watch on my DVD so I can make my own schedule. I wish I had someone close that I could get together with to answer questions. But unless I have lots of $$$, it's not going to happen. Hopefully I can ask them on Cordie and maybe someone can help me out.

Thanks again,
Bill

You don't need to spend lots of dough to learn how to play. If you have questions this board is one of the best I have found as there is not one question that I have not gotten an answer for nor is there a stupid question. Learning music is fine but,at the risk of pissing all those who have learned to read it,you don't need to do so to learn how to play. Many of the tabs, if not all, found on the internet have the chords for the songs on them or the tabs show you where to put your fingers. The tabs can be downloaded so you can make a book to take with you. There are many free applications for learning the guitar that may be found on the internet including chord charts, tuning apps, etc...There is one app called Alchemy that shows all of the scales and has thousands of chords. Youtube is great for listening or watching the original artists play the songs or even watching amateurs cover the songs. It is especially helpful to know how to do the strumming patterns or picking for the songs. don't let your lack of money limit your learning.

good luck.

I must back up the first post for a few reasons:

-Auburn's defense has been suspect all year long. The only reason why they have won is Newton and they have not faced the quality of offense, nor the speed, that Oregon has. Oregon's defense is better prepared for the speed of Auburn while Auburn is not prepared for the speed of Oregon.

-The SEC does not play the West Coast well. When they do they usually lose. If they do play a team from west of Arkansas they won't leave home to do it. The PAC 10 will travel anywhere any time. Say what you want about the SEC but until they start playing quality out-of-conference teams away from home (instead of playing the Southwestern [ Insert appropriate SEC state here] Boy's Reformatory and Choir) or some hapless DII team, at home....every time) they are merely pretenders. I'll take Boise State, TCU or any of the top-tier Pac 10 teams on a neutral field any time if they play the SEC.

I know, I know, Gary Danielson and many others have proclaimed the SEC the best conference in the whole wide world! Remember this: Four years ago the economy was too strong to fail. It did and once the smoke clears and the SEC starts playing quality games outside conference regularly its strength will be exposed as a sham.

I know, I know, five of the last six national champions were SEC. Hey! If you played cupcakes all year you too would be fresh for the Big Game.

I could be wrong...But I don't think so.

You could probably do it with any can of liquid or semi liquid foods. The liquid gets hot, steam forms and pretty soon the pressure gets to be greater than the can is able to tolerate. It is known as a BLEVE: Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion. Good fun just don't be in the way of the ends of the can when it BLEVEs.

I just started playing again myself. I find it hard to keep my spirits up when I cannot do all that I want to. One of the things that has helped me keep it up is every time I practice I always end it with two songs: Pink Floyd's "Mother" and Green Day's " Street of Broken Dreams". I don't do the leads just the chords. every time I play them they sound better and it helps me to know that I am getting better.

I got both songs out of the beginner song books. Once I get those songs down pat I will move on to two more.

Good luck.

Downstrokes only, upstrokes only, alternating downstrokes and upstrokes in quarter notes, eighths and 16th to start.

Then try some drills where the metronome doesnt tick on the quarter note - it ticks on the half note, the whole note, or every other whole note. This will help you internalize tempo.

Now stop that! I am learning to play too but I cannot read music so I go by the tabs. "...quarter notes, eighths and 16 to start..." ? Is that .25 cents, 12.5 cents and three nickels and a penny? The more I read some of this the more confused I get...sigh....

Here let me say what he should have: When I picked up the guitar again I was thrilled that I could find a site that offered so much for free. It has made re-learning to play a real joy. I have learned more in the two months since I first started than the nine months I spent taking lessons at 13 years old.

If the rest of the computer is ok then just replace the HD. You can probably get a copy of XP on ebay but you cannot buy it anymore. If you do go the new HD then try to see if there is anyone with a copy of XP that you can borrow. You might be surprised at how many there are out there. You might also wanna try to go to HP's website and see if they have the recovery disc that they can send you. It may cost about 15 bucks if they have one.

Remember that microsoft or HP may not have updated drivers for the computer and you might have to install Vista or Windows 7.

If you have not taken it in to get it looked at you might wanna do that before you spend for a new HD. It could be your vid card/chip. I had the same issue with two of my laptops. It was not the HD. I burned the vid chips out playing Call Of Duty on-line.  If that is the case try to install a new Motherboard. It will be cheaper, in most cases than buying a new computer.

I worked retail security for 13 years. That means I caught shoplifters and dishonest employees. I hated it the last five years. Lost my job and told my wife I was gonna follow a dream. Did not have enough money to become a Formula One driver (and I am too tall) so for the past eleven years I have been working as a firefighter/paramedic. I am actually an Engineer/Paramedic; the one who drives the engine and pumps it on fires.

I cannot tell you how much of a difference it makes to wake up and actually look forward to work. The schedule is very amenable and even though the pay kinda sucks I get to spend alot of time with the family and have been able to support my son in water polo/aquatics and my daughters in volleyball. I also get alot of time to practice guitar. This makes my wife happier because I used to spend alot of time playing Call of Duty online.

I have always had a healthy...respect for heights. I get vertigo in certain situations. One thing I was always able to do was climb ladders and, beleive it or not, rock climb. I think it was the three points of contact and the rope/harness thingy that made it easy for me. It was just at the top when I was off the ladder or off-rope, near the edge, that was hard for me.

About eight years ago ladders changed for me. I was at work and our Division Chief (Fire Department) decided we need lights at our station. It was a two-man station so it was me and the Captain doing it. Our ladders have butt spurs not rubber pads on the "feet" or butt of the ladder. The spurs are metal and do not grip well on concrete, blacktop, etc... thus we foot the ladder when we go up one.

As the firefighter I was on the ladder and my Captain was footing it....Until he walked away (!!!!!!!) as I was climbing it. I got to the peak of the roof ( about 15' up) and the ladder started to slide backwards from the bottom. I tried to scramble up onto the roof but no go. I was going for a ride...whoopeee. I spread my feet on the rung until each foot was at a rail and decided that as the ladder was just about to hit I would stand up and flex my knees in hopes to lessen the impact.

Time truly does slow down in situations such as this. I had time to think of all the patients I had run on that fell from lesser hieghts and had to go to trauma centers. I thought about how two fractured ankles would feel. I thought about the effects of a serious head injury and how much stupider I would be. I thought that I would, at that moment, love to have my hands wrapped, unlovingly and rather firmly, around my Captain's throat. All that and more in about two seconds.

Just before the ladder hit I stood up and flexed. I twisted an ankle upon impact and fell on my behind. I jumped up and my first thoughts were: " I hope no one saw me looking stupid..." No one did. I found out that I yelled a not so nice word as I fell as the Captain came running out. I picke dup the ladder, brought it into the bay abnd threw it to the back of the bay,( I could not replicate that feat even now if I tried.) I told the Captain that Xmas lights were not on the schedule until I was safe at home.

I have issues on ladders now...Could not fathom climbing that tower.

This is an issue that many forums are facing now. If one wants to use an article in some forums you must cite the article and the author with a link to the original article. Other forums will remove the article altogether and just post a link to the original site. If copyright laws are not followed the board owner can be sued.

From what I understand (sorry just word of mouth) there are copyright legal beagles trolling forums looking for violations so the original authors/writers can sue.

Try looking into the group called the Cruxshadows. Much of their music is science fiction based. Also: Rush, particularly  2112 and the group Coheed and Cambria.

My dad played when I was a kid. Mostly folk songs and the like. He had a Yamaha classical guitar and a Yamaha ( I think) 12 string. We were not allowed to touch the 12 string. It was a beautiful guitar.

In the seventh grade my school had a guitar class so I took it. My first guitar was a Cahuenga classical. I never got that good with it as it was too hard to barre with but I did learn to play "House of the Rising Sun" on it. Most of the other songs I learned were folk songs which I forgot how to play immediately. The only songs I remembered were "House..." and "Country Roads" by John Denver.

I never played much after that but my brother kept it up and passed his passion on to my nephew (he is self-taught and is an impressive player). I just looked longingly at his guitars when I visited.

My oldest daughter, seven years ago, decided she wanted a guitar for Christmas. We bought her a steel string acoustic and a beginners book. She tried to play but did not like the pain that she caused her fingers and gave it up after a few weeks.

Fast forward to about five months ago: My daughter (oldest) talks my wife in to letting her get a rabbit, (against my wishes but two women against one man? Not gonna win that one...). Daughter then goes off to college and we get stuck with a homicidal lop-eared rabbit. Wife tells me we have to let the rabid rabbit run around outside of the cage as often as possible. We do it in daughters room as she is gone. I get stuck with the chore. About two months ago I am in the room, avoiding looking straight into the eyes of the rabbit (challenge to her I guess, not gonna chance it I think she carries a switchblade), and pondering 45 minutes of pure delight. I spy daughter's dusty guitar case, open it up and start playing.

I had fun. I figured if I had to spend time in the room with Bun Bun I would make the most of it. I also figured the dreadnought would make a good weapon in case the rabbit got any ideas about offing me.

Birthday on 10-30 and wife gets me an Epiphone acoustic/electric starter pack. Unsolicited. Cool!  Been playing (trying) any time I can find it. Been playing so much I have not played Call of Duty 4 (which my wife hates more than lima beans) online for about three weeks.

Now I want an electric.

I just started playing the guitar again after many years. Many years. I am trying to figure out how to play the fills. This is beyond me as my experience is just with basic chords and simple songs (seventh grade, 1977, class and very little playing since) . So...the question is: How do I read the fills so I know what fret and what strings to play?
