They're already selling the Borg implants. Except I think they're called "bluetooth", which is weird because they are neither teeth nor blue.

Re: I love applecare (11 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
iTunes is horrible. It's like the new AOL. Remember how AOL used to automatically download upgrades and soon just the program took up 2/3 of your hard drive. iTunes is like that. About once a week I get a 78mb download, or larger. It's relentless. Plus, it doesn't recognize any media player but my iPod. And it's a pain in the neck to organize and get to do what I want done. The free Microsoft player is easy to use, accepts my phone, my GPS' media player, my wife's MP3 player, my daughter's MP3 player, etc.
Worse is that if I copy a CD to iTunes, I have to copy it again to the Microsoft program. Pain in the butt to have to have two different loads of the same music to my computer because Apple wants to be proprietary. Of course, they want to sell more iPods, but when I can buy a reliable, easy-to-use MP3 player that has expandable memory for $50 and it costs hundreds to get an iPod with enough memory to be worth while, that's not going to happen.
Harder to use software, proprietary delusions of importance, and expectations of spending four times as much as necessary to get a device that has a lot of extra capability (none of which I want) are ridiculous.
As far as computers, the last time I looked I wanted to buy an Apple. I had certain features that I wanted. I ended up purchasing a laptop for myself, one for my wife, a computer for my kids, a printer, and a faster wireless router for less money than just the Apple laptop would have cost.
I know Apple is the standard for musicians and graphics artists, and for good reason. But for everyday use, I just don't see it.
I'm glad they took care of you by sending you a new computer. That's good customer service. For what they charge, they darned well better provide good service.

I've had to miss the last several and I'm really missing seeing you guys and hanging out, even if it is virtual hanging-out-ery.
My sister's in town and may enjoy seeing how it works. I'll be pretty busy right up to the kid's bedtime tonight, but I'll check in to see whether anyone is planning to be around.

Re: alaska picks (5 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I like the sound of using my fingernails. I don't keep them real long the way Esteban does, but I do grow them longer than most men would. I have not tried the Alaska picks, but I very much like the design. I just haven't got around to ordering them. I hate standard fingerpicks because I cannot feel the string with my finger, and judging the power of the stroke is very hard without the feel. The Alaska picks look like the best of both approaches. They'd permit meat and feel on the strings, but wouldn't require the longer nails.
If you try them, please write back with a review.

My favorite. I'm sure it was all scoped out in the studio, but how they keep all that technique getting tougher and tougher while still maintaining the mellow feel of the song is impressive to me.

I've been playing with Dirty Ed and Bo Crowder and "Garuchi" for years. Only Dirty Ed has learned new songs, but it all still sounds good every time we hear the same old songs. Don't worry about it. Sometimes working on the old songs, figuring out a lick or nailing a solid strumming pattern is more work, and more satisfying, than learning a new song.
Music is music. Make some and it's all good.
No chance I'll be on at 5PM. If you're still rocking into the night, I may pop on to say "Hi" if the hotel's WiFi is fast enough.

Stagg makes a good value guitar. I've played some of theirs and for the money, they sound pretty good and have decent volume. I think you'll enjoy it when you get a chance to pick on them.

Is John Denver A requirement at the campfire jam?
Pretty much. I don't think we'd get arrested if we didn't do Take Me Home Country Roads during the weekend, but so far we haven't risked it.

OK. So I've been looking around on Shakespeare sites and can't find it. Perhaps it did originate in "Monty Python's Holy Grail."

I'll be up in no-man's land in BSawyer's territory Friday and Saturday, but I'll have my guitar along. The hotel is supposed to have WiFi, and depending on how the drive went, how my wife is feeling, whether the family is doing anything, blah, blah, blah. I've got something scheduled from 6-8 on Friday evening, and I expect that my family will go out for coffee and pie (but only because the ice cream shop will be closed by then). So if I join, it will be late.

"Back, foul temptress"? No, it's not from "Hamlet"--does it have something to do with "Dungeons and Dragons"?
Perhaps "The Tempest" then. It's definitely Shakespeare. I thought it was Hamlet where the lady is encouraging him to kill the king.

Re: Did the music store screw me, or did I screw myself? (9 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I agree with Joey. A deal is a deal.
You went into it without full information. A case can cost $90 or $100 for a hard case and the guitar for $150 you say. You traded two guitars that you know how much you had into them, but didn't know what they could bring. You went down without knowing what the stock was at the store and which guitar you'd prefer to have. A little time and research before hand may not have netted you a better deal, but it may have as well. You'll know next time to have all your ducks in a row before initiating the transaction.
As it is, I think you got the short end of the deal but maybe not screwed. For any deal there's a range that's defined by the most a buyer will pay and the least a seller will take. In a horsetrade like you did, it's hard to tell who is the seller and who is the buyer, but the principle is the same. You had to have been somewhere in that range because you did a deal. However, if you been better informed, you may have been able to make a deal that would leave you better satisfied at the end of it.
Live and learn.

how about calling it "Rolling from the law"
I like that.
Yes, Dino they caught him. He said they brought him home, then searched his house high and low. He's an honest fellow, so they didn't find anything untoward. He just got a little too crazy one night is all. I expect there's few among us who aren't guilty of that. He said that for a year afterwards, every time he saw a cop the cop was chuckling.

The mahogany guitars from Martin are identified as a 000-15M. They are not just a 000-15. Chris has probably nailed it. Nothing wrong with sapelle. It's a great sounding wood. But, if you are looking for mahogany, you want a 15M.

A neighbor of mine who is confined to a high tech electric wheelchair admitted to me tonight that just after he got the wheelchair he got drunk in a bar downtown and on the way home when the cops tried to pull he over HE RAN FROM THEM IN THE WHEELCHAIR. If I can't make a song out of that, I don't know what it will take.

Yes. I need to make the final arrangements, but it's still on. I'm planning to move it to a little different area of the same campground to avoid the, uh, particular 'aroma' we had at the very end there.
