Elixer nano custom lights (0.011), although I just started using DR's in a cool red finish and these are coated similar to the Elixers and a couple dollars less.

Re: Strumming help (15 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Hey all
I've been playing the ukulele for over a year, and I must say I have become quite decent at it. I decided to buy a guitar and I have a question about the strumming.
On the uke, you hit all strings all the time when strumming. But on the guitar, there are certain chords that you omit strings from. The C chord comes to mind.
Is there a trick while strumming to note hitting the strings I'm not supposed to? With the C, I hit the top string all the time without meaning to.
Thanks
In some songs the first strum emphasizes the root note (bass note) of the chord, so it will be important to learn how to catch just that particular string. The thing that I find helpful is sort of strum that initial strum more in and out rather than up and down with regard to the face of the guitar. Hope that makes some sense.

Re: ACOUSTIC FENDERS (29 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Ive never played an acoustic Fender I liked... but some of the best electric's ive played have been Fender...
Someof the best sounding acoustic's ive played are Washburn. I would lean more toward the higher end ones but I think they play and sound very well.
I own a Taylor 314CE and a Washburn...I play the Washburn just about as much as the Taylor. It has a wider neck, more bass, and I like how it sounds very much. I'm a big fan of Washburn from my experience.

If they're so good you can't stack up what fun would it be? They're on audition too, so relax. I figure you have an idea what song(s) they play and can ask them to play one you like (excel). Like Zurf says it's mostly meet and greet. I remember we auditioned three different guys and all had good enough talent. It's more about how your taste meshes.

Detman you might need a break so maybe try fingerpicking a SINGLE chord until your right hand (picking hand) learns the "dance" on its own. Try Travis picking (thumb, 1, thumb, 2) where your thumb picks bass note index finger (1) picks next, thumb picks bass note, and middle finger (2) picks a note. Just don't give up. It will make you hear differently. After a couple days do the same with anothre chord. In a few more, try to move between those chords while continuing the pattern. You should start hearing music patterns differently. Good luck but don't fret.

Down up Down - Down Up Up; Down up Down - Down Up Up where the "-" represents a pick swing without hitting the guitar strings (just so you keep rhythm). Try that.

When people hear your name they are going to think what kind of music you play. If they're wrong the right audience may stay home.
That said, think what it sounds like on the marquee or when you introduce yourself... Tonight: (Your band's name)
Tonight: "Fourplay"
Tonight: "Free Beer"
Or Hi folks, we're: "Not From Around Here"

Steve I resisted for a long time, but a pick has helped me hit individual notes and a thumbpick also takes a while to get used to. Try BRAIN picks. They have a velcro sort of sticky feel like a cat's tongue....yes I've grabbed a cat's tongue and I know you have too. They're color coded....start with purple(060) or red(073).
Just to laff, I superglued my thumbpick on the first time I played in public. Now there's a solution that might not be good for the long haul!

Welcome Maryliz6 I think you've found the best tab site there is. Suggest you get a capo and use Chordie to transpose songs that may be more difficult to chords you can play. That's one tip. Learn G,D, Am, and C and you can SLOW strum Knockin' on Heaven's Door. It's a good one to play because it's not hard to sing and other people will be able to play along. Then maybe learn to play chord A and Em. Those are easy and open up a lot of songs for you. Good luck and welcome to a very rewarding passion.

That's cool LR. I think Lapslide is right .. open D sounds sweet on slide. Probably some blues stuff would be most gratifying. You might learn just the solo part in Traveling Wilbury's Handle With Care. There's a lot of good slide players on Youtube, but I'm a fan of Tony Furtado since he opened for Eric Johnson at the Birchmere. Here's a sample and note the simple movements he seems to use. Good luck!

That was a good tuba... thanks.
I like a lot of videos, but we haven't heard the last of this little guy and you'll be an instant fan if you aren't already. I can only console myself in knowing he probably can't ride a bike and I bet he's no good at Pythagorean's Theorem. Then again he's probably this good at everything he does.

Once again someone showed us a nice song..thanks for sharing it. I too checked it on Youtube and there's a nice cover or two. I think with the capo on what's comfortable for your voice this version has the easiest chords. This one sounds nice to me. I think capo on 2nd fret. Starting chord shape Em.
Here's the song:

Re: Self taught or taking lessons (86 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Ozy, I was taught by Duncan Wood who showed me finger picking in a number of patterns, and some (little) classical, and strumming over 7 years every 2 weeks and I never thought my hectic schedule would allow it. But it forced me to give that time to MYSELF. I'm thanking him here publicly for giving the gift of music. I'm on my own now but plenty left to learn on my own now having started at ripe old 40.
If your old time string band is interested see if you can get them to play "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show. That would be a hoot and it has harmonies and multiple pieces for everyone to get a go.

Re: replacing strings (13 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Another thing about lighter strings is they tend to be a bit quieter. If your guitar is harsh it can tone it down. But SouthPaw is right the strings will give more so you'll tend to bend notes. I use Elixer custom light nano's....they're .011 sort of a compromise, but lots of places don't carry them.

Gordon Lightfoot - If You Could Read My Mind. It's synchopated...thumb, 1, 2, thumb,1, 3. But I think you'll have it down mostly in about 2 or 3 weeks. Don't work on chord changes too much at first to get the pick pattern down.

Re: Looking for a New Guitar (35 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Takamine has a lot of fans. I have one signed by Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart). It was my first guitar. But I love my Washburn D10 nearly as much as my Taylor 314CE. The Washburn at over fifteen hundred less holds it's own very well. If you'll study the differences you can help make your mind. THe Tak is narrow neck with bright tones. The Washburn with thick body booms and has nice spacing between the strings. The Taylor is in the middle with sweet tones from top to bottom, but does tend to be more treble at times than I like. Don't buy one without playing it and play a lot of them and you'll be very attached to the one you pick. In your price range I'd take a look at what Washburn offers.

Re: Strum Pattern (5 replies, posted in Music theory)
Kim, daddycool is right...
Try this: The emphasis is on 1 (1&2&3&... don't hit the strings on 4 but go ahead and swing your pick like you are going to hit it. She say's "I was" before you hit that first D chord. When she says "ridin" you strum the D emphasizing the down stroke. It goes DOWN, down, up, down, down...then go on to the Em DOWN, down, up, down, down, etc. Just hum where the words are gonna be until you're comfortable in the strum.
I was (D)riding shotgun with my (Em)hair undone in the (G)front seat of his (A)car...
Hope it helps. Neat song.

Justinguitar is a good suggestion above. He's got the knack. Also try Knockin on Heaven's Door G, D, Am, G, D, C... Wonderwall's a good hit, but might be a challenge on the rhythm. I just started this one and it goes over with the crowd... Wagon Wheel by OCMS. It's just (Capo on 2nd fret) G, D, Em, C, G, D C thruout. Emphasis on strum pattern. There's two levels of guitar playin'. Entertaining to yourself, and entertaining to others. In less than 4 months I expect you'll get to level 1 (LOL).

Topic: New Loop Pedal - Got Tips? (1 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hi folks. Just got my new RC-2 off Ebay and was wondering if people have good tips on things. I stumbled on a article that said my 5S-5U pedal will allow me to stop a loop with just one tap and it turned out a handy trick becaus you can stop and restart a loop during a song more readily. That really works. Anyone got some good practice tips/ideas for my loop pedal?
