good heavens, 3 new members in one thread....a record? welcome all. i would ask though if you'd take a look at the stickies at the top of the forum menu and abide by the rules.

as mentioned above, we have a wide and varied membership of beginners and well matured musicians, who will (hopefully) be able to answer all your questions and give help and guidance. the thing is ...you must ask.

i love the finish on your guitar, it looks really cool. is it a real gibson or a copy? i ask because of the finish, the single pick-up and of-course the lack of the pickguard. how does it play?

russ, your experiencing latency. you may find the delay becomes a little intolerable when recording onto audacity. there are cures. is it a USB interface you are using? if so you may need a USB3. i had to buy one, got it quite cheap on the net. amazon i think? there are other tricks like taking out all unnecessary stuff like webcams cameras etc. it took me ages and the help of a tech to get it working. good luck.  phill

i also read through the list and where i've never heard of most of the songs, there's only a couple of artistes that i'd heard of. the low points being; the spice girls and madonna!

i only trawl through the library when i'm looking for a particular song. stats and listings dont really concern me. i only get annoyed when the song i'm looking for isnt there.

hi russ,
i have a yamaha dgx200. i bought it for midi-ing to the PC. be careful of the midi out, if you unplug or move the keyboard a lot while plugged in, you may find that the midi connection gets faulty. i had mine repaired then it broke again, so i bought a korg K61p controler keyboard which also has audio piano, organ, strings but no drums. cheap and cheerful.

hope you enjoy your new gear

hi curt,

if your just kicking off recording then maybe you should start slow and work your way up. i've known lots of people that jump on a karaoke mic, get a big reaction from their friends and end up spending 1000's on stage equipment just to sell it off again after 6 months cos they stink as stage performers! i'm not saying that you stink, but look before you leap.

1st tip, have a look on amazon for some used recording gear, you can usually pick an 8 track up quite cheaply.

2nd, you need a good mixer, i bought an alesis (new) from maplins quite cheaply (less that £100)

3rd, good quality jack leads and connecting leads. (the alesis has a USB interface)

4th, unless your actually gigging, you wont need a big amp, i usually plug my guitar/keyboards directly into the alesis.

5th, you can use a stage mic for recording your voice with no problem. i wouldn't recommend sticking it in front of an amp though, direct inject is best.

6th, wooden/tile floors and bare walls will cause unwanted reverb/echo. you need a dead sound and add FX when you want it.

7th, if your near power cables you may get hum or buzz from amps etc. check before setting up.

your right, the beatles (back in the 60's) won all the awards, they were a great band, but individually they weren't the best that were around. george harrison won best guitarist for several years, when you had the likes of clapton and hendrix around.

ian anderson of tull would admit that they were a folk/rock band, not heavy metal. they probably got that label form using a heavily distorted rocky sounding guitar in their music. along with a flute and acoustic guitars! tull have always been known for their complex arrangements, how they remember all the changes is beyond me. and they are still touring...

they began life as a blues band. i have a DVD of their appearance at the isle of wight in 1970, and it's very bluesy. as you may have guessed, i'm a life-long tull fan, also beatle fan and yes too.

lost the plot now, what were we talking about?

yeah if your the joe shmoe sitting in the corner playing rhythm guitar for 6 hours a night without a break. what about fills, runs and stuff that make playing rhythm more interesting?

there are many great inventions, guitars and beer are just 2 of a long list. cordbuddy aint on that list, it doesnt even make the worst invention list. i'm cranky, sorry

and a great job too.

i looked on chordie, and was directed to a bunch of versions. i wanted the words so i for the nancy sinatra version. chords are:

Fm-Bbm-Eb-Cm

i prefer your version so i ignored the above as whoever did it messed right up. i only wanted the words like i said

sorry TF but if you listen to the tambourine in-stead of the drums you will see that it's actually in common time 4/4. i'd be more concerned about the key changes. the drum pattern is just a rhythm thing, ian anderson does it a lot.

i gave up trying to play jethro tull stuff years ago, i just sit back and enjoy it now....let the mysteries engulf me in a blissful funk of folk/rock euphoria.

after listening to your version, i checked it out in "songs". now the quandary i have is; you've changed the beat (which i love) and you've also changed the chording (which i also prefer) and dont appologise for making an excellent recording, the drums are just not what i'm used to on a loop. top notch

hi zurf, just had to say that here in the UK when you say "tie my own flies" it's taken as doing up your own zipper! i realized then that you were referring to fishing flies, (another bad habit i dont have)

that's what i was trying to say, so thanks for that. the guy is obviously a very skilled musician and well practiced on this instrument.
i had noticed he never stops fingering the guitar frettboard, he thumps down to get the note, not easy on a loudly amplified electric guitar, but he's doing it on a mic'ed acoustic...kudos

very interesting. from what i could make out, it is tuned as a harp/sitar. all the notes he played (apart from the bass notes on the heavy strung classic guitar) were open notes as per harp. he then added a little strum for effect as you would a sitar, but i think the main carrier of the melody (what there was of it) was played by the pianist.

dont get me wrong i'm not knocking this guy, he's very skillful and melodic in his own right. do you think he would want to join the other strings forum?

when i listen to the guitar greats, clapton, howe, blackmore etc, and i think to myself, "yeah, i can do that" then i try and i wonder "how the hell did they do that?" i realize that my plateau is way lower than theirs. so i content myself with the knowledge that they'll never have the luxury of playing one of my songs tongue
