Rabid - An acoustic electric is not fence-straddling.  It's acoustic.  The electric part just makes it sound like a louder acoustic when you put it through an amp.

As far as an AE in the $300 range, you have a lot of options more than Squire.  As a minimum, check out Seagull, Ibanez, Alvarez, Applause by Ovation, Epiphone by Gibson, Washburn, and/or Takemine.  There's nothing wrong with Squire by Fender, but Fender is much better known for their electric guitars than their acoustic guitars for a reason.  Their acoustics are fine and if you buy one you'll enjoy it.  But there are other lines that make better sounding guitars for roughly the same price.   Solid wood top beats laminate (plywood).  At $300, you're in a range where you can find either.  Unless you fall in love with a plywood top guitar, go for the solid wood.

Unless you plan on needing to plug in right away, the electronics aren't a priority.  If you are planning to plug in right away, be sure to test the sound plugged in as well as the sound unplugged when you're at your favorite guitar shop.  I did this with an Ibanez and a Fender AE bass.  Unplugged, they were very, very similar sounding basses.  Plugged in and run through the same amp at the dealer, the Ibanez absolutely blew the Fender away.  So when I say that electronics aren't a priority, if you do choose to get one with electronics, then getting GOOD electronics is worthwhile.

Use HTML language.  You'll need an on-line picture service that will give you a web address for the picture.  I use Picasa because it's free.  There are others like Smug-Mug and Flickr and such.

Then you put img inside square brackets the web address for the picture and then /img inside square brackets.

[*img*] web address [*/img] without the spaces or the asterisks.

That's supposed to work.  It's kind of an iffy sort of thing.

It slows down songs on your computer so you can better learn them. It does electronically to digital music what we used to do by having a friend pinch the tape on a reel to reel to hear something slow, except it doesn't affect pitch when you slow it down.

Anybody have some recommendations?  I'm considering it, and would like free if it's really free rather than no-money-but-we're-going-to-mess-with-your-computer-and-send-you-all-kinds-of-junk-mail free.

I've been very fortunate in that regard, but times are tough all around.  People losing jobs and can't find new ones.  Good, smart, capable people.

Just got back from the August River Jam.  Seems like my work is paying off as one of the guys I used to jamm with back when I was just learning electric bass was there.  He's heard me through all of the painful days and he said I was sounding pretty good.  He taught me a few rhythm lines for him to play lead against and we had a good time like that until the others at the campfire were all bored to tears.

Glad you had a good time Zurf. Sorry I missed it.

We missed you.  I know how you feel about West Virginia rivers, so I know that anything that kept you away from them had to be important.  I e-mailed you a couple photos.  Gary, Roger, and Diane all asked after you and send along their good wishes.

Just back.  Very small turnout, but I had a good time playing with my old friend Garuchi.  Fished some and while I didn't catch many fish, I caught some good sized ones.  No trophies, though I did catch my largest smallmouth on a fly rod (to date).  Picked up a few picking tricks and a couple exercises to hopefully improve my playing.

The weather was absolutely perfect.  We ought to have had a terrible storm Saturday night.  The temperature dropped quickly, my guitar kept going out of tune quickly (sure sign of a rapid drop in barometric pressure), and the wind kicked up.  My friend Roger (same Roger who shared a margarita with a raccoon at the July River Jam) checked the RADAR images on his smart phone and it looked like it was going to be bad, bad, bad.  But somehow the crazy deep hollows and gorges and the steep bluffs rising out of them directed the foul weather around us.  Where we were, just a few drops of rain during the night and a gorgeous clear blue sky by morning.

I got a new idea for a song hook.  Not sure how to use it, but in a discussion of what we all appreciated about camping, the concept that it "embraces the opportunity for wierdness" arose.  There's a song in that idea.  It will be added to my hook book and see what comes of it.

And those chickens can afford much better cinematography than Hayseed Dixie!

Well I think it's impressive that the guy with the big beard doesn't blink for 3:41.

They're no Hayseed Dixie, but they are chickens and penguins and an eagle.  I always envied Floyd's musicianship and dedication to the bass.

If what you are looking for is covers that sound exactly like nothing you've ever heard, then we need to jamm again Topdown.  Nothing I play sounds anything like "right."

I was just looking at the website Pete posted. That guy has a pretty sweet collection. But really, would you actually play a 1930's or 40's vintage guitar if you had one? I don't think i could do it. That's like a piece of history.

Guitars are meant to make music.  They might be pretty, but they're not for looking at.

I like your choices in music.  That venue looks like a lot of fun.  Good job with the song.

That is a sore disappointment.  I hope you and your family are OK.

Don't be so sure about those lessons Usky.  My teacher is a hack who plays no better than his student.  Of course, I am self-taught...

- Zurf

Good gracious don't do that!  Some of us (like...me) don't play well enough to be impressive and crazy sounding chord names is our only chance to impress.   :-)

- Zurf

Welcome to Chordie Tone Capone and Subatomic.

Those are some scary looking chord names for some straight-forward cowboy chords.  It's amazing what some people can do with a D chord.

Bump.

This event is next week.

I'll be arriving on Thursday probably.  The campground is available to us as early as Monday.

If you are planning to attend and planning to attend early, please drop an e-mail to Diane Law (the owner of the campground) via their web-site.  http://www.riverchaselodge.com/

Thanks.  I hope to see some of you there.

There are likely to be some spare boats around for those who want to give paddling a try.   I know I'll have at least two spares.

Also, take chord changes out of the equation........just play the first chord and sing that part over and over until you memorize it, then second chord....I call it "chunkifying."  smile

So you're saying if we can't get funky, that we should first get chunky?
