Should this song be played with your fingers?

Re: Much Respect to Led Zeppelin (19 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
I know a guy who's a good musician, he could learn guitar really fast if he wanted to. But he spends all his time playing games, not only Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Those games are cool, and do introduce you to some new music-I had never heard of Eric Johnson until GH3 (or Dragonforce, for that matter). But this kid chooses to become ridiclous at a game, when if he put that much effort and time into a real guitar, he'd be decent by now. You really don't appreciate the music until you try to play it for yourself.

Very true! You want to play like Jimmy Page? Learn guitar, not some video game controller.

Re: CHEAP GIBSON AND FENDER CLONES = A LIST OF (BAD)GUITARS (7 replies, posted in Electric)
I played a horrible guitar. . .sounded awful even when it was in tune-a Peavey Raptor thing. I'm not sure which model Raptor, but it must have been a cheap one. A very good cheap guitar I played was a Fender Starcaster. Sounded nice and played nice. However, even when comparing my Danelectro to my uncle's Gibson LP Standard, you can tell why the Gibsons cost what they do. I will say, though, that my Dano is about a $300 guitar, and it sounds awesome.

I don't even know what my usual strumming pattern is, I just adjust according to the song and go by feel.

Re: beatles tab (1 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Sorry I don't have a tab for you, but I remember out of a tab book I used to have how it starts. First, you tune down a whole step (DGCFAD). Then it starts out with a Fsus (Gsus shape), and then Esus (F#sus shape), and then I don't know from there. Maybe you can figure the rest out. Good luck!

Revolution is sweet. . .one of the few Beatles tunes that has a hard rock sound to it. This isn't necessarily my favorite song of theirs, but then again how do you choose just one?

There's a really cool intro on this song, he's just picking notes out of chords, but does anyone have any clue where to find tabs for this song? Thanks

Re: Fastest playing guitar? (17 replies, posted in Electric)
I've always been turned off by the speed players. I say the note you don't play (and the silence) (Think David Gilmoure on "Animals") can be just as important as the notes you do....
Of course as you can plainly tell that may be part jealousy and I love a good bluesy solo
If they can play ridiculously fast and still sound great, more power to them. That's why my favorite players are guys who mix slower melodic parts with some fast runs, like Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, etc.

Re: Fastest playing guitar? (17 replies, posted in Electric)
depens on the person playing and how long they have been practising the fast peace of music;) if you want to gain speed try thunderstruck of ac/dc the intro
You know what's funny is that I used to think Thunderstruck was crazy fast, but it's pretty easy to play after you learn hammer ons and pull offs, although sometimes I actually pick the notes to get a better sound. If you want to see some crazy speed playing, check out Eric Johnson Cliffs of Dover live on youtube, or Herman Li and Sam Totman on Through the Fire and the Flames, or pretty much anything by Yngwie Malmsteen.

Topic: Artist effects pedals? (4 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I've seen these effects pedals like a Brian May and Jimi Hendrix pedal that are supposed to capture the original sound of certain songs. How do these work? Do you just connect them to your amp and you're good to go? What happens if you mix effects on your amp with sounds on the pedal?

Re: Songs who are very huge hits but tricky concerning who wrote that song (6 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
You may be wrong with 'Leaving On A Jet Plane'. This is the first paragraph from Wikipedia:
"Leaving on a Jet Plane" is a song written by John Denver in 1967 during a layover at an airport in Washington and recorded by the Mitchell Trio that year. The original title of the song was "Oh Babe I Hate To Go" but Denver's then producer, Milt Okun, convinced him to change the title. Denver wrote the song after his flight was delayed. This song would later have a large significance in his life as a plane crash would take his life in the 1990's. Others covered the song in 1967, including Spanky & Our Gang and Peter, Paul and Mary on Album 1700. It did not become a hit until Peter, Paul and Mary released it as a single in 1969. It turned out to be their biggest (and final) hit, becoming their only #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States.
Of course this article could be wrong and I would be pleased if you have more info.
Roger
I wasn't sure about that one, I'll have to find more info.

Classical Gas wasn't written by Clapton, but Mason Williams
Leaving on a Jet Plane wasn't by John Denver, I'm not sure who wrote it

Re: Mixing strings? (4 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I've mixed strings before, on my 6-string acoustic and 12-string electric, and you need a really good ear to tell a difference unless the strings are different gauges. By the way, it's all personal preference, but if you ever want to try something different I highly reccomend the Martin Eric Clapton Signature phosphor bronze strings. Mine are light gauge. I used to use Martin Marquis 80/20 extra lights, but these Claptons hardly ever go out of tune and have awesome tone to them. They are about half the price of Elixirs, although I've never tried Elixirs, so maybe I'm missing out.

Re: Anybody heard about that Robot Guitar? (2 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Pretty crazy - You dont have to ever touch the tuning keys cause itll tune itself and you have every tuning ( like drop d and all that) at your disposal cause it does those too. The only bad thing about it is the price. Like 3 thousand or somthing.
Anyone on here own one?
3 grand is cheaper than most Gibsons. . .I'd rather have a Les Paul or SG Standard, the real deal. The only benefit I see with the Robot guitar is if you use a bunch of strange tunings. . .not like you really need any of them though.

Re: amps? (33 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
ok i will do tht i will save some money up because i want to get a good amp that will last for a long time, thx
Tube amps are nice if you are really concerned with your tone and if you can afford one, but amps like the Line 6 Spider III series can get you a ton of sounds, including those of tube amps, for a lot less money. If you don't care about mimicking certain sounds, then a tube amp probably will get you a better tone. Also, I might add that for $400 you can get a sweet solid state amp with tons of effects and power for a lot less cash than a tube amp with no effects and less power.

Topic: What notes make up a chord? (3 replies, posted in Music theory)
Hey, I've noticed that in certain chords like E, F, G, etc, the first, middle, and last notes of a chord are the notes that name the chord. However, in chords like C or D, there are only two notes that name the chord. So, my question is how do you know what notes make up a chord, and what about the non-major chords, like 7ths and minors?
