Some time ago I wrote a song called "Bristol Bound" about a crew of fishermen out in bad weather in an open boat heading home up the Bristol channel. This song is a kind of follow on to that one. I wrote the first line weeks ago, then the rest last Saturday. The chords and melody came Tuesday and I've been struggling to find a second verse since. I then realised that the whole story is in the one verse (with a little instrumental piece at the end). The whole thing only lasts about 2 and a half minutes and is on Sound Click, click at the bottom.

you could well be right, but just like most other daft ideas, eg; "they need a good talking to" PC came from the US!
i've seen a cracker today, they've said their going to come down with the full force of the law on the rioters, two were sentenced to 4 years jail? which means out after 2 years, spent in a holiday camp! and the "human rights brigade" have said it's "against their human rights"
i wonder if they had to give the 12 i-phones, 3 50 inch plasmas, 8 X-Boxes and 3 packs of crisps back?

if i wanted a motorcycle i'd buy a yamaha....and they probably are the same company.
my advice on buying a new guitar, acoustic or electric is; if it looks nice, hold it. if it feels right, play it. if it plays right, buy it. the maker is secondary. and the country of origin is way down the list. i understand the chinese are making some nice copies...if your a newbie, you cant afford to be a snob.

i've got to be honest, like the other mods, i've done a fair bit of banning lately, so i check out the new members with odd names, like; sleewhaphwews...and try to catch these spammers before they can do too much damage.
the funny thing is, i see people joining chordie but never taking part in the forums! i know it took me a while to pluck up the courage to post my first comment (which was on songwriting) but once i got into it and began putting my own songs up and also taking part in the other forums, some i still havent taken part in, i found i really enjoyed being a chordian. some people have been members for years (and are on-line right now) but never taken part. everyone has something to say. so join in and be nice.

t all seems to have quietened down now pretty much. all we've got now is the political rhetoric. the political parties are blaming each other for the mess they've made. the conservatives want to reduce the numbers of coppers, and say it's the fault of the police force for not reacting in the right manner. then they say it's the fault of the parents because they're out of work and they live in high rise slums and are surrounded by druggies! what they seem to forget is that it was their party and maggie thatcher that started the whole "break the unions and throw all the working class onto the dole (unemployment benefit) cycle" they've been in power just a year and once again they've thrown thousands out of work, closed down factories, put up prices and reduced benefits. their now talking about reducing tax for the rich! so the poor slobs that get up each morning to go to a thankless, minimum wage and dead end job with no chance of getting a pay rise to off-set inflation, have to shoulder the tax burden. and worse, make the rich people richer. that's conservatism. it's time the decent people of the uk woke up.
sorry for the political rant, but i am incensed about this situation

After all the troubles lately in London and other English cities, this came to me this morning when I saw a young lad, no more than 18, accelerating down my street with a drink in one hand and changing gear with the other. It's a narrow street and we sometimes have a few kids playing outside, luckily not today, they play indoors...
They Play Indoors. Phill Williams
When my kids were young.
They played on the street.
They had clothes on their backs.
They had shoes on their feet.
Now my kids have kids of their own.
They play indoors.
There's kids walking `round.
Sky high on drugs.
Can's of strong lager.
Left where they've fallen, litter the ground.
They wear hoodies and scarves to hide who they are.
They fight in the street, smash up your car.
Mayhem precedes them.
Destruction in their wake.
Gang warfare, knives and shootings.
Addiction and death is their fate.
And my kids now have kids of their own.
They play indoors....safe?

my first public "outing" was in a local working mens club. i played with a drummer and organist. the organist went hell for leather at the free beer, and at the start of each song i'd never played before i'd ask what key were we in? a reasonable request if we expected to start in the same key? by the 5th or 6th pint of buckleys best bitter ale, i'd get answers like "monkey, doorkey, ohkey-dohkey!" i learned to pick out the key by the bass pedals he was playing. and i learned many a standard song! it was a steep learning curve, and i got to play backing to many artistes, and how to please an audience...sort of!
ah the good old days....

well, thanks for all the support guys. i've been gigging for close to 40 years now and was thinking of "retiring" after new years eve. but the closer i get to the date the less i feel like hanging up my telecaster!
i'm still writing songs and poems and i do believe the stuff i've written since joining chordie is some of the best i've ever done (so you can imagine how rubbish my older stuff is lol)
i also feel my "live" voice is better than ever and my guitaring is still improving, slightly!
once again thanks for the great words of support

hi guys, just a quick pop in here.
the problem i find with web cams and camcorders come to that, is that the sound will never be what you want. if you get too close you'll get distortion. too far away and it'll sound like the addams family!
best results will be if you jack a mike and guitar into a mixer that can plug into the mic input on your computer, then you should (with a little experimentation) get the sound and picture quality you want.

Jets wrote a song which caused me to make a big political rant about how we poor folk have to pay the way for the rich who make a mess which we also have to pay for. So Jets said that there was enough angst for a song or two. No music yet, so it's consigned to Poems till I or any one who fancies giving it a go can come up with something.

Re: C'est la Vie (11 replies, posted in Songwriting)
here's a thought....as rob says "if we get out of these conflicts it would stop the money draining away..." where does it drain to?
the govornments pay for the guns and bullets and tanks rockets etc etc, so the money doesnt just dissapear, it lands in somebody's bank...yes?
so logically (mr spock) someone must be getting richer than the governments, who? arms traders and manufacturers, microsoft, of course. but not us. we the poor only survive to cater to the needs of the rich and aristocratic, (of all nations) we work for them. we get a meagre pay for that work, from which we pay taxes, then we have to buy those same goods we make, and pay tax on them. when they mess up, as they so often do, they put up the price so they can make more profit. then they cut cost, so they can make more profit, by laying workers off. so the sales drop, so they put prices up again. and again...
sorry for the rant, i am not a communist, but then i'm not stupid either, if they reduced prices, we would buy more, wouldnt we? if they reduced taxes we'd have more to spend, wouldnt we? it's called the money go round. what you put in this side comes back out on the other.
if the rich fat cats thought about that instead of lining their own pockets, there would be less of a global crisis?

I was 60 last Saturday, and as a treat my wife took me to Liverpool as a surprise to visit all the Beatles places I'd like to have seen 40 years ago. This came to me as I was pondering those 3 days, and the fact that I can't now do all the things I would have liked to have done.
Is sixty past it? Phill Williams.
I have been every age, from naught to sixty.
I've felt my powers grow, and now I feel them fade.
I wasted my youth on many childish things.
On many stupid boyish things.
On things that make me close my eyes and shake my head.
I was never the wisest of my brood.
Never the smartest in my school.
Never the best at the things I was good.
Never that good at the things I was good.
So I sit here aching and wondering why...
I let all those opportunities pass me by?
“I'll get the next bus.
“Have my last Rollo.
“Take my seat I'll stand.
“Let me hold the door...
Please and thank-you were always my way.
Polite and courteous, stand back and smile, tote that barge, lift that bale.
I can only insult, if it sounds like a joke.
Why cant I be a pig like everyone I know?
So my best years are past.
I walk now, and creak.
I wobble when I stand.
And I sleep between pee's.
All the music I loved has been stacked wall to floor.
Someone came 'round and locked tight the door.
All the music is gone, is that boom-boom a tune?
Sixty's not past it, it's just old to you.
I'll be around a long time yet!
