The streets of Laredo - Traditional country song (I think)

The streets of Laredo was originally an irish ballad (in fact I think James posted a lonk to the original author one time),as were many traditional western ballads that came from that time period. It wasn't called that of course, the words to the verses were changed up over the years and it became the song we know today.

Marty Robbins does a version of it if you're interested in listening.

Me and my cuz used to do Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd, I'd do the fingerpick lead on electric and my cousin would strum the chords. We used a version that had the chords C G Am....
You could always just play around with some bluesy little lead notes and have her strum in E, and of course there's the age old trick:
           A
l-----------------------
l-------------------------
l------------------------
l-2-2--4-4--2-2--4-4
l-0-0--0-0--0-0--0-0
l-----------------------

which you can move up and down a string, that could use some backup strumming.
Thats A like I wrote it, you can go up and that would make it D, and down and that would make it E.

           D
l-------------------------
l------------------------
l-2-2--4-4--2-2--4-4
l-0-0--0-0--0-0--0-0
l-----------------------
l----------------------
          E
l---------------------
l----------------------
l-------------------------
l------------------------
l-2-2--4-4--2-2--4-4
l-0-0--0-0--0-0--0-0

Maybe its time to learn some new chords??? Or maybe learn to barre some that you'd been half barring, try laying some lead down over songs you've only been chording, or put some fill in strumming on lead parts you know. Maybe its time to take those 'slow' solos up a notch, learn something on the same level that has a faster tempo, or start breaking down longer solos? MAYBE its time to expand your musical horizons by studying a new style of playing.
Its really all up to you. The good thing is that even when we think we've hit a wall, there's actually a whole 'nother world of playing just beyond our sight. All we need is that one little inspirational 'breakthrough', something so obvious that we'll look back after we've mastered it and go 'My God I can't believe I didn't know how to do this." I'll never forget the day I figgered out I could actually bend the strings lol
SO, what do you do untill the breakthrough comes??? You keep playing, pushing yourself to play new things, and when you encounter something you don't know how to do, its time to learn how. Hit the books, ask advice, look up lessons, whatever you have to do. AND KEEP PERFECTING WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO DO, each level of playing acts as a base board to the next, what you master today might be the underlying principle of a new trick, riff, lick, or even picking style, strumming pattern etc.
Its kind of like algebra, except you'll want to do it.

I have to say your learning very fast by the way smile

The best way to get good calluses is just to PLAY. Play through and in spite of pain, peeling, and 'flat spots' (not sure what ur talking about, but for God's sake don't file your fingers off lol). In time they'll come in like thier supposed to, especially with a teacher showing you where your fingers are supposed to be.
My skin still cracks from time to time, but  I can't really feel it anymore. The skin on my fingertips is noticabely tough, I've been playing around 4 years and my fingers are just now starting to 'reshape' but the toughness has been there a good long while.
I've already saud play through the pain, but when you get to that purple 'Oh my God I can't feel my fingers anymore' place, its a good idea to take a break and let them rest. They'll get purple and shiny and you'll be able to feel your pulse...... i don't miss those days.
Another tip would be to keep your left hand fingernails pretty short, its easy to let them kill the strings.

Welcome to chordie big_smile
Me I never had lessons, but Im sure thats the right way to go about it. Look under the 'easy' section of the public songbooks for some good suff. Its better to go with songs you know, but here's a few fun ones:

Bad Moon Risin'- CCR
The Joker= Steve Miller Band
All I Can do is write about it- Lynyrd Skynyrd

Then you know a bunch of country stuff, don't know if you're into that. Out of curiosity, what style of music are you learning to play?

Well as for basics,
There's a big chord chart, you can try this too it will help with chords:
http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/chord_name.php

Look on here under scales, various, or something like that for basic riffs, scales, licks, etc.

Check the public songbooks under 'easy', you'll find lots of stuff from all kinds of music, chords, tabs, anything.

If you need help learning something in particular, you can always post a question, (I just did a couple of topics in 'electric' about reading tablature).

  Holler if you need somehting,

wow thats impressive....
would have to say even if I was that good I'd probly still be on my front porch sippin' tea and pickin' guitar same as always, cuz thats just what I do, and anything I do to better myself will still land me doing the same thing at the end of the day.  I play because I love it not because I want to get famous.
but I bet this guy could make some pretty good money if he played a paid band position or something he's got the skills.

Howdy Fred and welcome to chordie smile
Thats awesome that you teach. Sometimes I wish I'd have gotten lessons before I learned everything too backwards for it to do any good haha. Anyway, hope you enjoy the site there's lots of good advice floating around and its a real clean helpful site. I'm sure being a teacher you could help alot of us younger players out when we have problems too, and of course any of us would be glad to help you too if you need anything.

Lord that'd be a long movie, not that Ive lived that long (Im 16 and green) but Ive done alot and been a lot of places.
The soundtrack would be something like-

'Ive always been crazy'-waylon jennings
'guitar money'-bocephus
'tuesday's gone'- lynyrd skynyrd

Not sure who would play me, I don't think I look like any famous people. Would have to be somebody who could pull off a drawl though lol, maybe reese witherspoon could do it like she did June Carter and I could pretend I look like that big_smile
I DO know that ray's parents off of Everybody loves raymond would have to play my grandparents, and ron white could be papa haha

well the main thing for me is just curiosity, considering the fact that I paid around 98 cents at a goodwill for most of my records (I paid eight bucks for the folsom album, and actually 20$ for second helpings just because I'ma hige skynyrd fan and I thought it was cool not because I neccesarily thought it was worth that much), I don't think I've lost too much.
I don't want to sell my albums,  I hang them in my room and play them, but I would like to know if they're worth anything (just for bragging rights I guess haha). My entire collection has been purchased with the mindset of 'I'm not going to buy any record that I wouldn't actually listen to", regardless of monetary value, so it means something to me that it might not to someone else.
In fact one of my favorite ones is the cover only of ZZ Top's eliminator, not in the greatest shape and the LPs not even in there, but I got it from my cousin a long time ago and I promised to take care of it. It was one fo his mom's own from her younger days, and she told him if he ever gave it away it would have to be to me or my brother because she trusted us. Not because its worth anything, but because it was from her childhood.
SO, I'm going to try the estimate book idea, and the 'collection' one see what I can find. I thought maybe if I typed in the product code thing (SE-#####) maybe something will turn up.
  Thanks yall,
          last rebel

Just wanted to drop in and say hi, got back from the country. Had a good time, played guitar at a revival in Warren, got a little sick but its all good.
Anyway, while I was gone I bought a few LPs, (skynyrd's gimme me back my bullets was one of them, which I'm pretty proud of). I was wondering if anybody knew a way to find out (or even estimate) what a record is really worth. I collect them just because I like them, they look cool and I even have a record player, but I'd be interested in finding out how much my collection is worth.
I've got a few that I think are probly the most valuable out of the collection...

Red headed Stranger and Shotgun Willie- Willie Nelson
Live at Folsom Prison- Johnny Cash
Second Helpings and Gimme Back my bullets- Lynyrd Skynyrd
Coal Miner's Daughter- Loretta Lynn
Ramblin' Man and Lonesome Onry and Mean- Waylon Jennings
Brothers and Sisters- Allman Brothers

And a bunch more, but thats a few.

I like that idea Roger, Im leaving for a week this morning but I'll work on it when I get back. Sounds good though smile
daddy cool, I'm thinking it needs a Johnny Cashish type intro which could use some string bendin.

Okay here's the lyrycs, its kind of like something they would play in between scenes in a western movie, which is why I wrote it in 'parts'.
For now you can play it with a very basic E,A,E,B,E type pattern, but I was hoping to get some advice on how to use chords to give it a more haunting quality. Any suggestions (especially from James or Old Doll or someone) would be really helpful.

PART ONE

He was a drifter with no name
Born to rob them trains
He was the quickest quickdraw in the west
He liked his whiskey strong
And he sang a cowboy song
And leavin' town's what he done best

He'd drift into town
Find a woman to lay down
Drink too much and raise all kinds of hell
I have heard it told
That the drifter sold his soul
Hard to believe he had a soul to sell

BRIDGE 1

What did you say your name was stranger?
Who was it who give you them scars?
You're runnin' as if hell was right behind you,
Remember you can only run so far

PART TWO

He had sharp eyes of green
A smile wicked and mean
You could smell the liquor on his breath
He kept a ace tucked up his sleeve
He knew how to cheat and thieve
They say he'd even managed to cheat death

But one day he met a man
With a pistol in his hand
He said my name is Johhny Lee
Now you probly don't recall
But I watched my woman fall
And your the man who took her from me

BRIDGE 2
Now you've had a real good run Stranger,
But you can run away from hell for just so long
The devil don't give up that easy stranger
Your gonna have to face what you done wrong

PART THREE

They layed him in the ground
Under a tree outside of town
But nobody called the preacher man to pray
Weren't no cross above his head
No stone to mark the dead
And it rained all night and half the day

When the rainin' was all done
They heard somebody fire a gun
They found Johnny Layin' in a pool of blood
But aint nobody seen
The man with eyes of green
And he hadn't left no footprints in the mud

The devil must have somethin' on you Stranger
You've got a hollow look around the eyes
You're runnin' as if hell was right behind you
And you've only got until the end of time

I hope they do not dissapoint...

lol ok ok I know, I'm a hillbilly for knowing that southpaw, but in the country whenever you kill a coon you keep that particular part as a good luck charm....kind of like a rabbits foot. By the way, we don't normally cover them in sterling silver, we tie them to a stick or something, that jewerly thing is kind of screwed up lol
We also keep the tails sometimes, armadillo skulls, hawk feathers, hawks foots, alligator heads, bull skulls, and horns (which we make instruments out of), and all kinds of other things.
Anyway you can chalk that down as the 'something new' you learned on this particular 'everday' big_smile

Haha, nice one James. Interesting take on the situation, I always loved Johnny Cash but I couldn't ever see him being THAT innocent.... and for the record he was a pill popper more than a drunk
