Thank you GuitarPix, I will try that "Pressure-Focus" technique.
I tried putting tape on my pointer finger but it messes me up when i go to play extended scales with my church band during service. And my finger started going numb from lack of circulation also.
I've been to at least 8 guitar shops and everyone is stumped at why I can't get any sound out of my barre chords on the g-string.
I guess being skinny can suck after all...
Geez...I can't even do barre chord techniques.
I'm never gonna get it because of my stupid frickin left hand. Because of the way my stupid pointer finger is shaped, my G-String never gets depressed fully and I can't get any tone out of it when barring any chords. At this point I don't know whether to get surgery on my stupid frickin finger to make it fatter or something....or get a custom made guitar with a lump on the g-string part of every fret (which will of course cost a fortune).
Man, why the heck do I even bother with this stupid frickin guitar. This blessing from God is more like a curse... For every 2 steps forward I get I find another roadblock.
Lol, well that was funny indeed.
And I understand why I can't play the blues.
I'm not sad..
Great...well, I guess life could be worse...
Dm
WWhat do you have to have gone thru to play the blues??
I mean, I've had some problems in my life but nothing that God hasn't fixed.
I feel like I don't have that "Soul" or whatever it is that allows a person to play the blues.
Everything I play sounds so formulaic and patterned.

For Line-6 Spider amps, you don't need to purchase a noisegate.
There is one built in-to it but you have to use a combination of the buttons while turning it on to access it.
Look up "Line-6 Spider Amp, hidden codes" on google to find the method.
I have a 30W Line-6 spider amp and i didn't know about this until someone clued me in.
Dm
Self taught here...going on year now.
Everyday is exactly the same...
Everything I play sounds the same...
I find myself using the same stupid chords unless I'm reading someone elses music...
I had a teacher for about weekends in a row until he got a job...then that was over.
Now I'm just playing in church...where my sound isn't accepted by anyone...
And I've come to realize that I have no soul.
Not the spiritual "Soul"...but the thing that most guitarists have that give their music expression and flavor...
Whatever it is...I don't have it.
Dm
Having formal instruction is worth the investment if you're serious about playing guitar
Agreed.
I've mostly taught myself everything I know on guitar and I hate my level of ability.
I wish that I would have taken lessons so that I can create music and express what I feel...instead of constantly playing other people's songs...badly.
Maybe I would understand more now instead of being depressed over my lack of understanding.

Another trick is to learn to do the A major using just your ring finger, with a bit of a 'backwards' bend at the last joint. Slide that up two frets, and add the bar with the index finger. Note that on any of the barre chords done in this manner, it's okay to mute the high e string, though for good technique's sake you should probably try not to.
Yep, thats the way I do about half of my chords.
Especially the B. I only do the "B" barre chord at the 7th fret if I'm going to go to an E, A, Am or D.
Dm
Amen to that!!
I've been using an Agile Silverburst Les Paul as my main guitar for over2 years now.
It never lets me down and I havent had to change a thing on it besides the strings and lowering the nut and bridge.
Its my dream guitar and I love it. I get compliments on the clean tone of it and the looks all the time.

Yes, Blackberries can do that.
There are quite a few applications for the blackberry smartphone.
I have the following apps on my blackberry pearl.
1. Guitar by "Inhandlearning"
2. Guitar trainer by "Mobiletutor.org"
3. ChordGenie by"Chordgenie.com"
All three have a metronome, chord charts and Chord learning games.
Enjoy,

I just started playing in a jazz band (unfortunately my guitar skills aren't at the level they need to be to play for something like this, so I play trombone), and I'm curious about how some of the guitar soloing is done. It gives the chords on the sheet, but at the guitar solo section there's just chords. How do you play a solo just by using the chords? Does knowing the scales based on the chords allow you to do this? How do you know what scale is based on a Bb9, for example? This is one thing that baffles me still-I can read down tabs just fine, and strum along or play fingerstyle with chords, but to play a solo I need to see tabs. Can anyone help me here?
Well, the first thing I would do (right or wrong maybe...but improvising) is drop that "9" and remember the fingerings for a Bb. Then play at/between the first and third fret where the notes that make up that chord reside...
Or play the individual notes on/of the 6th 7th and 8th frets where that Bb is played further up the neck.
Correct me if I'm wrong gang...
Dm
Awesome.....
Well, awesome in a "rare find" kind of way.
Dm
Wow man, you weren't kidding!!
I paid 50 dollars for this amp and it played AMAZING in church today!
Once I had my settings in for the sounds I wanted it was as simple as switching to "A" channel for clean with a little bit of gain, tremolo and reverb
And "B" for my ghostly lead tone with lots of gain and reverb and a little delay.
It ROCKS!!
And the most awesome part is that it weighs about 10 pounds less than my tube Peavy artist 240
okay, thank you.
But why isn't it located on any of the "LINE6" pages??
It's like they disavow any knowledge of it's existence or something...

I know it's a 50 watt with a 12" speaker in it.
But NOWHERE on the blinking internet besides ebay can I even find ONE picture of the amp i just bought.
None of the user settings for any of the other amps even come close to matching the descriptions on this amp. This amp only has one color per LED for each of the presets.
IE: all of the descriptions for the amps listed on the manufacturer website list two led colors per preset.
I am trying to find out what the particular model of this amp is because I can't get any of the listed user settings to sound good out of this model amp.
Here is a picture of it...

Hallelujah!
I recently read your article on the problems of playing Guitar in church and you almost brought me out of my work chair.
I have gone through the selfsame frustrations Sunday after Sunday with the band in my church. I was never introduced into the band or accepted by them.
I simply let God lead me into playing and pretty much forced my way into the band. But the pastor, first lady and elders have applauded my playing and complimented me openly in front of the church many times and that has been my encouragement to continue forward with my playing in spite of the opposition.
My closest mate in the band is the keyboardist (The pastors son) and I think that he would include me in the band's outings if the rest of the musicians would stop influencing him. See, most of the band at our church are part of the pastor's family so they do everything together and rarely invite any outsiders in. They don't even have sheet music because the choir and band all pretty much are one family and live next door to each other or in the same house. So they practice during the week and keep it all in their heads. The only reason that I feel they bring the drummer in is because he has so many important connections with other churches and knows so many important people. Me, the little outsider, doesn't really have anything interesting for them to gain so they don't see me as an asset. To that effect, I have been auditioning with other churches and Christian bands and the more people that I play with, the better I find that I'm getting. A lot of the bands and churches that I'm experiencing lately have much better mindsets towards guitarists and they're actually giving me music to play with them! It's awesome how much better I can play when I have an idea of what is being played!
But it's okay, God will put me where I can be used best. If it's not at my church, it will be somewhere else….
Thank you for publishing your article, I am going to save it and add it to my archives.
At least I know someone else out there understands...
God Bless,
D.M.
Whatever you do, don't buy any of the crappy backpacker/travel guitars you see on ebay lol...

Kewl, Thanks Tyler. I'll look that Strat up and see if I can find one local to play on at a store.

Well, I guess you can say that I fit into that category.
My skill is not the best...but not the worst either.
I make up for my current "middle-of-the-road" skills with good equipment.
Guitar: Agile Silverburst Les Paul
Amp: 1978 Peavy Artist 240 (Tube)
I get great tone and it seems to distract people from my mistakes...

If you don't have one yet get a thick padded strap, it worked great for my tele.
I have a thick padded bass guitar strap on my LP.
It works great!
Thanks,

Well, I'm going to be in the Gibson camp a little while longer.
I found a workaround to the tough playability of my silverburst.
I took off the Drop-D strings (Ernie Ball - "Heavy bottom skinny top" strings)
and put on a regular set of rock and roll 9's.
I'm in barre chord heaven now...but my baby still weighs a ton...lol.

Dm
Well, I put the 9's on my guitar and the strings were buzzing from the way I had the action adjusted for the 11's I had on there previously.
After adjusting the action and retuning a couple of times, the strings sounded great and I went into trying barre chords again. Much to my surprise, I could pull them off without ANY PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER!!!
The only thing I had to do was learn all of the positions for the barre chords. Since last night I have learned all of my notes in standard tuning (including the sharps, minors and sharp-minors) up to the 12th fret.
I am so so so so so so so happy!!! Not only can I do barre chords now but I don't have to sell my prized silverburst LP!! With the newfound ability to play barre chords I am not stuck doing open chords anymore!!!
The songs I have learned since last night are:
"Our God Saves" by Paul Baloche
"My savior my God"
"I got you" by Stone Temple Pilots
"Atlanta" by Stone Temple Pilots
"Wild Horses" by The Sundays
"Alison" by Slowdive (I knew this one in open chords already)
"Sick of myself" by Matthew Sweet
"The Sun and the Rainfall" by Depeche Mode
"Home" by Sheryl Crow
"Wake up" by The Cranberries
"Animal Instinct" by The Cranberries
"Slow Ride" by Sublime
Whew...I'm in love all over again.
