well i play the electric guitar a lot. It's not like I haven't played an acoustic i just don't really know any songs that would sound better on an acoustic other then a electric so i dont really bother all to much.

So my question is does anybody know where to find any TOOL that would be good for the acoustic.

My friend, I too am a disciple of the house of TOOL.

Adam Jones was my inspiration for playing though I don't play in Drop-D anymore.

Hello everyone,

You probably haven't heard anything from me in the past 6 months because I WAS struggling with my playing. And playing in Drop-D was the cause of my depression and stagnation.

I started out playing in Drop-D cause it was easy. Within a year I hit a wall and could only play TOOL, Nirvana, Marilyn Manson and songs that are played in Drop-D. I didn't learn any chords, barre chords or other styles cause I thought I could get away with only playing in Drop-D. Boy was I wrong!!!

After a while, I wanted to play "Happier" music that sounded bright and more guitar-like, instead of the grumbly dark music I had been playing in Drop-D. I found that I couldn't! Not only couldn't I even imagine how to play other music, I simply couldnt!!

My fingers had become weak and my callouses disappeared because I was only using the side and bottom of my index and ring fingers to do drop-d bar-chords. I had to start all over again from the beginning and learn to play in standard tuning. I threw away all the papers and notes I had on playing in drop-d and set my heart on learning to play in standard.

In two short months, my callouses have come back three times as thick as they were before, I cam play all of the major and minor chords in standard tuning, I can play the major and minor barre chords in the different shapes (A-shape, E-shape, D-shape, G-shape, C-shape, 7th shape), and I am learning the different jazz shapes (VERY HARD).

There is so much limitation in playing in Drop-D. I wish I would have listened to the wise people here on Chordie 2 years ago when I started playing. I thought that I was doing the right thing back then and I want to say sorry to anyone that I railed against when I thought Drop-D was the best thing since sliced bread. I realize now that Drop-D has it's place in music, but it's not where I want to go right now.

I love the full sound of barre chords and open chords, they are what my heart has been longing for and heres the best thing.........should I feel the need for that grumbly dark sound, I can just do POWER CHORDS!!! They sound the same and now that my left hand is so much stronger from doing barre chords, regular power chords are SOOO EASY NOW!!! I always wondered how Billy Joe from Green Day played power chords so easily when he could have just done em in Drop-D but I realize that doing a standard power chord allows for much more flexibility and ease than trying to do em in Drop-D.

For Example....you're doing a G-Power Chord based on the 6th string and you want to go to a C-power Chord. All you have to do is drop that same shape one string down to the 5th string and VIOLA....you have your C-Power Chord!!!  It's so much easier than trying to go from a 1-finger bar in drop-D to the split shape you would have to perform to do the C-Power chord on the 5th string.

I'm absolutely loving standard tuning. I can only say that I wish I had listened to you all so long ago. I've gone about this totally backwards...

But i'm happy to be where I should now...

sincerely,

From what I understand, with drop C you can play one finger power chords---the problem being if you get used to playing drop C you're not becoming a very good guitar player.

Too true!!
Drop-D almost ended  me.

Remember you aren't placing a finger tip on any of these notes you're simply slamming the whole flat finger across the whole fret like a paddle. Just practise it till your finger goes in just as you pick the string.

huh??

I thought the whole point of soloing was to get clearly-defined notes to sound out in succession.
If I bar across the whole fret I'm going to get a bunch of notes sounding-off together like a chord.

I'm thoroughly confused on this point that you have made...
The rest (The "robot heads" and "blues-boxes") were EXTREMELY helpful though...God bless you!!

Wow, thank you both for the great responses.
Well, he said that he would give it to me but I don't know if it will be anytime soon.
I'm actually a bit sad that he hasn't passed it to me yet. I feel like I got excited over something that may or may-not happen.

I dunno, I just get the feeling that he was talking out of his pride and I guess just showing off.
He hasn't said anything else about it since he first mentioned it and I feel weird asking him about it...ya know?

Ah well, I guess i'll just save up for that line-6 I had my eye on and if he gives me the Bassman, so be it.... *sigh*

I would like to get a personal review of this amp because my boss said that he would give me his vintage one that he hasn't used in like 15 years. It has been sitting in storage and he offered it. I accepted not really knowing what this amp is really about...

Thanks in advance,

I use the built in tuner in my KORG PX4D "Pandoras Box".
If that's not around or the batteries are dead and I don't have my power supply, I use my Planet Waves S.O.S. Guitar Tuner.
It uses LED strobes to find the right resonant frequency of the correctly tuned string.

I think a big problem with a lot of music today, is that it is so engineered, so technically precise, that the emotion is sqeezed out of it.  I'll take Neil Young playing a raggedy solo on "Keep on Rockin' in a Free World", than  some perfect piece--there's soul in that music.

AMEN!!!
You expressed EXACTLY what I wanted to say!!

I have a PANDORAS BOX as well but I can't split the output to go to the mixing board and to my amp used as a monitor.

So....I have no choice but to plug directly into the amp and MIC the amp into the mixing board so that everyone can hear my crappy little 10W ibanez amp.

Also, I don't have enough time between Sunday School and church service to get my gear setup for all the different sounds that are available when using the effects pedal.  10-15 minutes just isn't enough time to get your sound right...

Go and get yourself a Zoom G2.1U and a cable splitter. Then you can play through the Mixing Board and the amp at the same time. cool

I've got a pandoras box (KORG PX4D). Can I use a cable splitter with that and route it to the amp and the mixing board?

Hey don't knock the foo fighters.

It's a pretty simple song though, but good.

It sure is a good song!!

Did you know that there are two guitars playing in it?
And they're both NOT Dave Grohl!!

Can you guess who the second guitarist is and what note they play throughout the ENTIRE song?

I get the same problem from my guitar. I think that it's because the saddles touch each other. I am looking into purchasing rubber "Isolators" that will keep the vibrations from each string seperated to  the saddle for that string.
These things go inbetween the saddles and keep the vibrations from transmitting to the surrounding saddles.

OK, first off there are the cheats, things that sound like solos but are really;

b) one note wonders, see 'I Can See For Miles' and Neil Young's 'Cinnamon Girl'.

If you've gotten your finger picking up to speed you can play real fast this way but it doesn't sound right, trust me I've tried but it's not rock'n'roll.

Real soloing could be said to be scales played up and down the neck really fast. There's  more to it than that, begin with Ralph Argesta's 'Blues: Jam Trax' book and CD combination. This is at least fun and if you keep at it you'll get faster. Look for this month's 'Guitar Techniques' magazine, not sure if this is UK only but this issue screams 'Play Faster!' on the cover and has exercises in legato playing which is at the heart of speed solos.

Wait...what do you mean by "b)"???
Cinnamon Girl is one of the songs that inspired me to stop playing power-chords and hit the individual notes in songs.

Wow, I don't know if I'm qualified to answer this but I'll try.

If you are looking for a versatile guitar you can definitely start out with a cheaper or used Les Paul.
Pawn shops are great if you want to sample the sounds that you can get without the pressure to buy.
(Mind you, amps and even you strings can subtly change the sound of your playing.)

I bought my (Reon) Les Paul from http://www.rondomusic.com after sampling many in stores and pawn shops. The price was right under what I could afford and they have the same quality manufacturing processes as Gibson, but without the expensive name.
And the best thing is that they're local in the USA...unlike that wesleyguitars.co.uk site...

Good Luck,

Well, I had to reinstall windows anyway since the PSU took out the hard drive I had in the case.
Had to replace it, the motherboard and the PSU. I decided to pick up a dual-core CPU while I was shopping since I found a good deal.

The new rig runs faster than the old but I'm hurting from the loss of all my save-games and programs I had installed on the old HD....

Ah well,
Dm

Greetings,

Due to the recent death of my motherboard (RIP Asus A8n5x), it will be replaced with a Foxconn NF4sk88a-8ekrs mobo. Since I had all of the information under a passworded profile on the main hard drive, will I be able to access the information once the new mobo is installed?

I haven't done a mobo swap in years so I'm hoping that since the new mobo is Nforce4 as well, there shouldn't be any issues with the swap. I seem to recall that was the factor that delineated the reinstallation of windows the last time when My ASUS A8N-SLI board failed. I was able to replace it with the A8n5X board without any issues because they were both NFORCE4 boards and the drivers on the HD were all the same.

Or should I expect to just load up my spare SATA drive with xp and go recover the data from the former main drive from there?

TIA,
Dm
