I like a SM58 as well for live play and general use.. I use a Rode NT1A condenser mic for recording and I can't say enough good things about it. I had a MX990/991 mic set as well and they were good mics for the money. I think mics are kinda dependent on the user... You need to try a few and see which one works best with your vocal range and adds the color your looking for.

Re: Excellent acoustic for the $$$ (11 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Dollar for dollar, I'll go with Takamine G series or Breedlove Atlas. Both are great guitars at good prices, and both manufacturers have excellent service. And if you want to go super high end, they can get you there, too.
Would love to hear more of your opinions on the Breedlove. I'm shopping for a smaller bodied guitar for Slackkey and Ragtime and have been eyeing the Breedlove om/sm at Elderlys.... We don't have any locally to try and was wondering how you would compare them tonally to say martin or taylor? Also What kind of fretboard radius do they have? I like a little curve to mine, like taylor or Yairi. Do you know how well they respond to bare finger picking? I know they have pre-war style scalloped bracing so should be fairly responsive but would love some feedback prior to ordering ![]()

Re: Guitar finish repair (2 replies, posted in Acoustic)
The repair process will really depend on the amount of damage... How big is the ding? Is it through the finish? Are you SURE it's a laquer finish? Some pics would be really handy! I hate to offer blind advice to anyone but yes super glue can be used depending on the circumstances... I've got some pages saved in my bookmarks that cover basic finish repair.. I'll see if I can find them when I get home from work and pass them on to you! -Pix

Re: Excellent acoustic for the $$$ (11 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hey Maximumod and Welcome to Chordie!
Now lets talk Zager
I hate to disagree with your post but am going to
Denny Zager sells fairly cheap import guitars (mostly). Solid top, laminate backs similar in quality to almost any other "Martin Copy" import at half the price. All he does is set them up with his so called "String Science" and doubles the price. He widens the string spacing at the nut some and lowers the action... How well he does these are debateable... Several owners I've spoke to have complained about the strings being spaced so far that they have a tendency to slip off the fretboard and buzz during aggressive play. His website is very misleading as to the quality of his guitars and only after having several conversations with Denny himself did I finally worm the truth out of him... Don't get me wrong though, His guitars are OK, But way overpriced for what you get. For the price of his Zad line you can get into some real all solid models that are far better values IMO. It's like they always say "If it seems to good to be true, It probably is". The problem with getting a custom set up from him is location and enviroment... Chances are the humidity and temp in your area will not match his, so even if he does set it up perfect when he has it, by the time it's shipped out and arrives at your location the set up has changed due to the change in environment. Of course these are just my opinions and your mileage may vary
All the best! -Pix
I will add that I've heard great things about his customer service!!

Re: USB, Firewire, and Fibre Optics (9 replies, posted in Recording)
Yea Fiber optics will rule the market in the coming years! Straight out of college I worked for a company called Sumitomo Electric... I built fiber optic data cables for major airlines computer systems.... When we first started the market was fairly new and was slow, but the last few years the market has really opened up and orders have poured in from other "Consumer based" markets... Audio, video, computer, etc.. are starting to turn to fiber optics. I agree with Jerome, the markets are definitely turning and the consumers will reap the rewards. Now all we need is for graphene (pure carbon) to hit the electronics market and we'll really be set ![]()

Re: What does quilted maple top mean? (4 replies, posted in Acoustic)
IMO Ibanez acoustic/electrics are great bang for the buck guitars in that range. I've had an AW100 and an AW200ecvv in the past and both were excellent guitars for the money! Also keep your eyes open for anything by Godin (Seagull, Art & Lutherie, Norman, Simon & Patrick) If they have them in your area, you should be able to find a nice cedar topped model with the Q1 electronics in your price range. These are excellent guitars and well worth a try!
What style music do you play? Strum or fingerpick? Do you have a nut width prefrence? Body size prefrence (dread, OM, GA, 000,etc...)

Re: What does quilted maple top mean? (4 replies, posted in Acoustic)
Quilted just describes the grain character of the wood.... It will be a laminate top. Essentially it will be a plywood top for that model with a pretty veneer of quilted maple on top for cosmetics. It has no effect on the tone of the guitar. Solid Quilted maple is sometimes used as a back and side wood but seldom used as a top wood. In general Maple is a fairly bright sounding tone wood with a quick attack.. Here's a pic of the quilted maple back on my '95 S&P Pro
The Takamine you're looking at has some excellent electronics and would be a great stage, recording, or plugged in guitar but you'll probably find the unplugged sound wanting... As always ,if you can, try one before you purchase to be sure it will fit your needs. Best of luck in your search! -Pix

Re: Strings (1 replies, posted in Acoustic)
It's almost impossible to mimic the tone of a given guitar with just string changes... There are just too many variables. Tone woods, body sizes, bracing/voicing, the players attack, string brands, gauges, compositions, pick weights/materials, saddle/pin/nut materials, even the fret material. Just too many things... Two guitars made from the same batch of woods, by the same builder ,with all other things being equal, will sound different. Also what you hear when playing the guitar is not what the audience (people in front of it) will hear. So, more than likely, what you think your guitar sounds like is probably not exactly how your guitar really sounds... Let's not forget the coloring added by techs during recording or the set up during live performaces!
I wouldn't get too hung up on trying to copy another artists sound... -Pix

Hey Nathan and welcome to Chordie! What part of the state are you in? We have a few members here from NC.
As far as adding songs... Chordie acts like a search engine and finds the songs on other "hosting" sites. So, Since we don't actually store any of the songs here, there is no way to add them directly to chordie... You can add them to a hosting tab/chord site and then add them to our index. That way they will show up on chordie.
If the songs are originals ,composed by you, feel free to post them in the songwriting section. -Pix

Re: Question for anyone with songs on myspace (13 replies, posted in Recording)
It seems to me that copyright laws are in effect on myspace. Or else we could copy everyones elses songs for free. Am I right or am I wrong?
I'm sure they are... I don't use myspace much and it's been years since I set up my account, but I believe you can allow it to be shared if you want... Someone else may know better though.. I know on some other social sites when you set up an account you can choose whether people can burn your content or not and I thought myspace was still that way, but you never know with how things keep changing...

So I can download the songs directly off of my myspace page?
I used to be able to... I just tried to from your page though and the dowload window wouldn't appear... So they may have changed something... Or sometimes my real player is finicky and won't record for a day or 2 at the time so it could just be a temporary problem. I've got tracks in my library that I downloaded in the past so I know it used to work... I'll keep trying it through the day and If i get it to work I'll let you know how.. A window used to appear when I was listening to the track and give me option to download to RealPlayer...

Re: shaftsbury rodeo 12 string (2 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hey Roger and Welcome to Chordie! You can string it as a 6 with no real problems... However you may lose some tone. Guitars are made to work with a givin amount of pressure on the top. 12 strings require more pressure to bring it to that resonate state because of their heavier bracing they have to stand up to the tension of 12 strings... If you go to only 6 strings you considerably reduce that pressure and the top won't vibrate/produce sound as well. You can counteract this by using a heavier gauge string to add some of that tension back. I'd start with mediums but you may have to move up to med/heavys before the sounds back were it should be. -Pix

Since we're on this subject.....The other night I gave the boys (I have 3 sons 11,9,& 7) a choice of desserts after supper. The choices were a snack cake, an apple or strawberry jello. The 7 year old said he had to have jello... Curious as to how he said he had to have it, I asked why?? He stated very matter of factly, that he liked jello because it changed his poop to red and that was better than the ugly brown color it usually was ![]()

The wife and I both thank all of you for the happy anniversary blessings!
Don't know why I set myself goals but I always have... I have a goal song almost every month. I guess it's just a personality quirk
I'm that way about everything. If I'm learning something, I really emerse myself in it and approach it strategically. I really enjoy a challenge and feel like I always need to push myself...
I have to say, that music has really changed my life. At the risk of sounding like the hippie I really am
When I held the guitar for the first time there was a special kind of feeling... Like, Yea this is were I need to be! Even though I couldn't even strum it evenly, I was hooked
It's been a love affair every since. My wife says I love my guitars more than her
I pick it up, gently rub the curves and omit a happy sigh, with that loving twinkle in my eye (her description)
Oh well, back to work! I've been painting the studio the last 2 days and now the wife want's the bedroom painted as well... Honey do's... and I can't deny with the anniversary tomorrow.
