More sentiment about the state of the economy in the world today. Kind of blusy so you can play it as fast or slow as you like with whatever mood that suits you.

We're About Out of Money By Jeff Gilpin

July 12, 2012

Capo 2

Intro - Verse 1

[A7]We're about out of money

[D7]Borrowing more everyday

[G]One day there'll come a reckoning

Be[C]fore it happens I just got to [G]saaaaay... [G7]

Verse 2

[A7]We can't get any money

From a [D7]bank that's already broke

[G]Why should we call the firefighters

When [C]all that's left is just [Em]smoke [Em7]

Verse 3

Because it's [A7]hard to fix a problem

[D7]That's been broke for a while

[G]Might as well spend like a sprint to the end

[C]Sink the old ship with some [Em]style [Em7]

Verse 4

And we [A7]can't pay the banks back

[D7]Can't even get a loan

[G]Can't put ourselves out of the misery

That [C]seems to just keep on [Em]growin' [Em7]

Verse 5

[A7]Forget all those lessons we learned

[D7]Then forget what we forgot

[G]Pour another flaming hot cuppa suffering

And [C]burn our hands with the [Em]pot [Em7]

Interlude

[A7] [D7] [G] [C] [Em] [Em7]

Verse 6

Our [A7]children are gonna remember

[D7]They're gonna spit on all of our graves

[G]Thanks for the mess that you left us

[C]How else should they be[Em]have [Em7]

Verse 7

Because [A7]we're about out of money

[D7]That is our cross to bear

But [G]not one soul wants to bear that weight

Pre[C]tending how much we [Em]care [Em7]

Outro - Verse 8

[A7]We care about keeping on working

[D7]Care about looking ahead

[G]Hoping we can ride the wave out

Until [C]long [G]after we're [C]dead [C7]

Hey Jim - I'm a sucker for grandpa songs and this is a good one. Well done.

Hey Lane - You're right. We have the hand we were dealt and we have to make the best of it. Same for the next generation as well I guess.

Thanks Lane - Kids don't know what they missed. We look back and worry about how missing the things we grow up with changed the young adults of today. Was it for the better or the worse? Only time will tell.

Thanks Dino,

Yep - Other stuff like my T-shirts were just...well... T-shirts....not too much fashion choices that I remember. I also left out lightning bugs...baseball cards...with gum...ghost stories...all without internet connectivity! Not sure how we all got by.  smile

I was just noticing lately that I’ve not seen many kids out and about even though school has been on summer break for a while now. That is far different from how I grew up.

How I Remember Summers Way Back When  By Jeff Gilpin

July 1, 2012

Capo 3

Verse 1

[A]Sleep in in the morning

[A]I got no school today

[D]Get up when I want to

[A]Then go out and play

[D]Come home when I’m hungry

[A]Then I’m off again

That’s [A]how I remember [E]summers

Way back [A]when

Verse 2

[A]We didn’t have the internet

[A]TV was kind of slow

[D]Nothing but soap operas

Or [A]maybe a game show

[D]Video games were years away

But [A]we didn’t know that then

That’s [A]how I remember [E]summers

Way back [A]when [A7]

Chorus 1

[E]Hide and seek and kick the can

[D]Rounders or kick[A]ball

[E]Baseball stickball basketball

Or [D]any old ball at [A]all

We [D]didn’t sit around much

After [A]sitting all year in school

[D]Summers were for doing stuff

It [E]was an unwritten [E7]rule

Verse 3

[A]Camping in the back yard

[A]Playing flashlight tag

[D]Maybe building a tree house

Or [A]playing capture the flag

[D]Made up game when we ran out

Or [A]start all over again

That’s [A]how I remember [E]summers

Way back [A]when

Verse 4

[A]Now a days seems like the kids

[A]Just have nothing to do

Their [D]minds are over loaded

Might as well [A]send ‘em back to school

[D]Too much so called entertainment

I[A]magination running thin

Not [A]like how I remember [E]summers

Way back [A]when [A7]

Chorus 2

[E]All cans are recycled now

The [D]balls are put a[A]way

[E]Parents forget to tell their kids

[D]You all go out and [A]play

[D]Have to break their concentration

Or [A]maybe cut their power

[D]Get them from behind their screen

[E]Hour after [E7]hour

Verse 5

[A]If I could choose the time

[A]When I was a kid to live

[D]Between all that we have today

And what [A]yesteryears had to give

I [D]wouldn’t have to think twice

I’d [A]do it all again

Back [A]how I remember [E]summers

Way back [D]when [A]

This song is about how people look at their life differently all through their life as they are growing. I chose to write the life path of this song as one that I think many kids take, where they wonder what life is as a child, think they figured it out as a teen, and get a rude awakening coming into adulthood. I skipped the part, the longest part that seems to go by in a flash, that 30-40 year period were most people are out working in the world. I finish the song with the adult looking back at life in a similar fashion as the child they were looked at life. I think it is funny, not funny ha-ha  but funny weird, that people wonder about life more when they are very young or very old.

[C]The time is here [G]decisions to be [D]made

[C]How I’ll live [G]how I’m going to get [D]paid

[G]...I’ll figure out some[D]how

[C]Head off to school but [G]I can't afford it [C]wish I’d better grades [G]but I ignored it

[D]Lately...[G]

I’ve been thinking about [D]lots of things...[G]

[C]Some memories are [G]sad and tear me in [D]half

[G]...But I’ll never [D]know

Lordy, this kid belts it out good here. Good tune - Live performance - and nails it.

This song is about the lifelong friendship of my father, Pete Gilpin, and Lewis Green. Both men were gifted writers, but both took different paths in life. Here is a link about Lewis for those who are interested, but I'm sure you can find more about him or his books: http://www.acountryrag.org/o01029.html
My father's life was a little more obscure. He wrote one book about the life of Bascom Lamar Lunsford, called The Minstrel of the Appalachians, but most of his writing was in newspaper articles in the Houston Chronicle and the Asheville Citizen Times. I couldn't find many links but you are welcome to look.

Ballad of Lewis and Pete By Jeff Gilpin

June 16th, 2012

Verse 1

[C]Lewis and Pete were friends I guess

[Am]Shared a love of words and jest

[G]Shared their thoughts that I confess

[F]Were way above my [G]head

Verse 2

[C]Writing lives help cross their paths

[Am]But their partnership didn't last

[G]Lewis struck out on his own

[F]While Pete preferred to [G]pay for his home

Chorus 1

[F]Lewis he was a native son

While [C]Pete he was a rolling one

[Am]Curious carefree thoughtful men

[F]Working writers [G]working friends [Am] [G]

Verse 3

[C]Lewis started his own paper

[Am]Filled it with thoughts of an obscure nature

[G]About outrage he felt inside

[F]Not well received but he [G]took it in stride

Verse 4

[C]Pete he was less controversial

[Am]Choose to run in different circles

[G]PR work at a learned school

[F]Following all their [G]social rules

Chorus 2

[F]Lewis man he ruffled feathers

[C]Pointed fingers at his so called betters

While [Am]Pete he kept his family fed

[F]Choose to keep his [G]thoughts in his head [Am] [G]

Verse 5

[C]Pete's life led him many places

[Am]Ended up back where he knew the faces

[G]Working for the state at the end of the game

[F]Retired when he finished [G]all the same

Verse 6

[C]Lewis he didn't go so quietly

[Am]Pissed off the church, some think rightly

[G]Wrote and taught until his dying day

But he [F]surely lived [G]some might say

Chorus 3

[F]Lewis died wanting to live

But [C]writers never stop wanting to give

[Am]Pete worked too but he shared his wit

With the [F]people where his [G]life was spent [Am] [G]

Verse 7

[C]I spoke at the funeral of Pete

[Am]Friends of his I got to meet

[G]Lewis was not in the congregation

At[F]tending church not his [G]inclination

Verse 8

He [C]called me said he wanted to meet

[Am]Wanted to explain something about Pete

I [G]never got the chance to hook up with Lewis

[F]He's gone now [G]too late I guess

Chorus 4

I [F]wonder now what he wanted to say

Why [C]he and Pete had their falling away

I [Am]missed my chance as happens sometime

[F]Missing his words feel [G]like a crime [Am]

Yep - unsure on how they learned to play that well, but those are some talented kids...cute choreography too.

Okay, here's what you do. Get the guitar chords from here: http://www.e-chords.com/chords/agustin- … te-una-vez

It shows the chords and lyrics for the song  (Amaj7, Bm7, C#m7...).

Next you go to this uke chord chart (http://www.ukalady.com/CChart.htm) and translate from guitar (if you don't know the chord) to the uke equivalent.

Good luck!

Thanks Dino and Beamer,

You're right Beamer. Many technical school grads, or people who've worked their way to where they are ahead of someone coming out of college with no work experience. I'm hoping this trend turns around sometime but I don't think it will until companies get more growth centric.

I read in today’s Washington Post that public universities will be pushing their super seniors to graduate. This reminded me that employers are still reluctant on hiring the super educated and prefer graduates with degrees that won’t command a higher salary. Anyway, this song is dedicated with my sympathies to the unemployed, indebted and highly educated class of 2012.

The one that comes to my mind first is:

I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song- Jim Croce
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6Vn17S37_Y

I know his music was way over played on the radio, but he had a string of great acoustic guitar hits back in the 70s.
