Welcome back Selso!!!!  I was starting to wonder if you'd ever be back.  So good to see you made it back here, and now have a computer.  Life must be looking sunshiny.  smile

ha!  They are going to be in Buffalo in July, and I am going to be at a family reunion in Buffalo on the same date.  My brother asked if I wanted to go.  Uh... yes they are legends but I think I'd rather remember them as such rather than as the creepy old zombies they appear to be now.  I'm sure it will be an amazing concert though!  Besides, I think I've been commandeered to provide some entertainment at the Reunion.

Ken - I won't say it's dark.  I'll say it's honest, and that's something that people can relate to!  I like it!  smile  I heard Pink Flyod too... but I can see a Nirvanna style there also.  Hopefully you do get time to record this one for us soon.   We're so greedy, but now that you've piqued our interest we need to know the rest of the story!  smile  Good to see you around again!  Check out the chat section when you get a chance - you may be close enough for the backyard gathering and we'd love to have you join us!

Ha ha ha!  Bill - it was a valiant effort!  Apparently both Dino and Phill thought we were going to write a new song (that's been done before here, and it is a LOT OF FUN)- but as that one is one of my Dad's favorites, I knew the next line and followed along.  Fun fact, when we sing it we change one phrase ... and it's not appropriate for this family forum.

So ok - I think we need to start over.  This is kind of a lyrics quiz game.  Rules were put up a line of a song, someone else has to put up the next line of the song without cheating (using google is cheating).  How about this,

"Oh, and as I watched him on the stage..."

NELA, Bill, Dino - You guys are going to have to plan something close to home!  I think this is a great opportunity to allow Chordians that aren't able to travel as far a chance to meet up and get together.  I've enjoyed meeting many of the folks on here, and am really excited to possibly put some new faces to online identities!  smile

Zurf- Shuttle Dad is a very important responsibility. Should someone else offer to man the shuttle, know that you're more than welcome to make a surprise visit!

Paul - Totally understandable!  We certainly do hope that you let us know when you'll be in the states again.  If there's anyway we can meet you somewhere along your route, we'll be sure to do so!

Joe (UJB - First name is Joe right?) - We had a feeling you may have been entering in the wrong info!  It took us about 6 driving hours to get to Virgina for the Zurfapalooza (July River Jam) a few years ago.  You'd have to be in some realllllly weird out of the way place for it to take you more than 5 hours to get to us from PA!  smile  AWESOME to hear you'll be able to make it!

Dave - Roger will be here for a bit, so if you can't make it on the weekend you're more than welcome to come up during the week!  Just give us a heads up so we can be sure to be home (Roger will want to go out to take photos and I know some GREAT places for that which are not quite in my backyard) and can hopefully get my Dad here as well.

There's a "Sunset Celebration" on Monday evenings in Sylvan Beach.  This pretty much means free parking in one designated lot, the crafters set up their junk, and pretty much anyone is welcome to "do their thing".  I've gone a few times and "busked" there for the fun of it (I made a dollar and change).  I was thinking an out of the way spot on the lawn between the lake and the free parking might be a nice spot for a Monday evening jam!  Anyone with kids will love this, as the beach and amusement park are all right there to walk; there are also some picnic spots set up close by to use free of charge (charcoal grills and picnic tables), although the kids and I usually just sit in the grass here.

I should also mention that every Tuesday is Bike Night and every Thursday is Classic Car Night in Sylvan Beach!  If the weather is nice (and it should be), the town will be filled with things men like to look at (yes, the women do prance around in bikini's too).  And yes, as a woman I am very thankful that I live a few miles away and not right in the midst of it all.  Wednesdays there is usually a local band playing in the center of town.  Everyone brings a chair and sits and listens.  This is pretty popular around here, most of the small towns have something similar.  Most of the bands are ok, but the Polka Band kind of rocks (I sooo hate admitting to that).

TF - That's a LONG drive!  I totally understand not being able to get away for long with horses!  To board one costs as much as to board a person!

DE - If you can make it, please bring Jen along with you if possible!  I didn't get enough time to visit properly with her last year, and I would really like to make up for that!

NOW... as for Roger's VERY long trip!  I have to say, he's got a few full days of travel ahead of him for sure!  I assisted him in finding flights.  There were some other options for shorter trips, but rest assured, the airlines make you pay for that!  Honestly, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.  Several different short flights that travel more miles over all, costing more fuel and manpower cost less money than one or two longer flights that travel less miles and cost less manpower.  I guess the airlines haven't caught onto the whole cost of fuel and wages thing yet.  Maybe they'll eventually get it.  I'm hoping to visit around the world myself, as soon as they figure out how to use the metal detector as a transporter and just beam me up since it won't cost near as much fuel or manpower as the current travel situation.  big_smile

Doug pointed us in the direction of the K&K's and I think someone else here has this pick up too.  No preamp required, no on board controls, no battery, and it's totally invisible (with the end pin also).  I plugged my guitar directly into a PA speaker and it sounded great!  I use it with my little acoustic amp and can adjust from there (although there really is no need).

I was looking at some of the sound hole magnetic pickups to start with, but I didn't like the "electric" sound that they give off.  The K&K truly does just amplify the natural tone of the acoustic.  I'll hop off the soapbox now, because to each his own.  Maybe you want a different sound than I did.  smile  Pickups can be a lot like guitars in that respect.  It's gotta sound good to you!  smile  Good luck!

Oh, you just mean weird laws in general!  Well, in NY if you want to get a no-fault divorce, you have to be able to agree to disagree.  Then get a seperation agreement, and be seperated for at least a year before a divorce will be granted.  That's easier said than done!
"New Yorkers cannot dissolve a marriage for irreconcilable differences, unless they both agree to it."

So if you want a divorce, someone generally needs to be blamed, and specific instances detailed on paper for all to see.  That tends to spark anger, and the other party usually disagrees with the reasoning (even if they want a divorce) which leads to a court appearance high legal fees, and plain old ugliness.  Divorce is expensive in NY. Not sure how other states work, but it always seemed odd to me to force people who clearly can't get along to either get along or fight. Fighting is generally how it's done here.

The date has been set, and I've updated my original post to reflect this.  Saturday, August 15, 2015 ... if you can't make it out then, but might be able to make it out the next weekend or sometime in between, please let me know (hummin n strummin, I'll be sure to send you an email with further details and if I don't see TIGLJK in here, he'll be getting one too.  You're both too close not to make it sometime during the week!).  We will have at least one guitar playing guest that will be here for a bit, plus my Dad plays and is retired, so there will be plenty of visiting/guitar opportunities in that time frame.

To assist in planning your travel distance before I send out emails with my exact address, you can go ahead and plug this into your favorite map program:

Sylvan Beach Amusement Park
112 Bridge St
Sylvan Beach, NY 13157

That's right down the road (about 4 miles) from my house.  It's also the quaint amusement park I've spoken about.  There are several motels in town, and a very very long beach along Oneida Lake.  Any questions at all, please ask or email me!

Alright, I'm dragging this whole idea back up... for a gathering THIS SUMMER!  If you are a friend of mine and Jim's, you're invited!  Jim and I keep going back and forth and back and forth... and I haven't gotten a LOT of solid responses regarding the Salmon River... so here's the new improved plan!

When:  AUGUST 15, 2015
Where: Our house in Central NY State
Who:  Local and Chordie Friends

What:
Backyard style gathering
Guitars
Food on the grill
Bon Fire
Kid Friendly
Tent Friendly
Boat/Yak/Canoe Friendly

We'll do one day and evening dedicated as a backyard relaxed party.  This means that if you live close you bring a dish, everyone BYOB and a lawn chair if you are able (coolers make great seats).  Bring your guitar if you are able (or share ours)!  Bring along the kids if you'd like (make sure they bring their suits because there will likely be a sprinkler or slip-n-slide set up).  Bring along warmer clothing for the evening.  Should it rain, we'll move to the wrap around porch (though the Farmer's Almanac says August should be fairly warm and dry).  Jim and I will provide food (NY Salt Potatoes, NY Sweet Corn, burgers, dogs, dead cow, maybe even dead pig, the best tater salad you've ever had in your life, fresh fruit, etc).

Note:  When I say, NY I do not live anywhere near New York City.  This is rural, Upstate NY.  We live in the central part of NY State.  Send me a message for the specific address.

Of COURSE those traveling should plan to stay for the weekend and if you'd like to stay longer, we'd LOVE to have you!  The yard is plenty large enough to throw up a tent.  There are also tons of nearby NY State Campgrounds (as well as private ones).  There are motels close, and Hotels close enough.  We do have a little bit of space inside - couches to crash on, however we have hardwood floors so crashing on a floor may not be a best plan unless you bring along a pad.  Along with one day of an outdoor party, we'll do a few days of just relaxed picking, strumming, or helping you find cool things to see depending on the turn out of course!  Nearby are streams, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, nature trails, and historic sites (battlefields and forts).  The Boxing Hall of Fame and Baseball Hall of Fame are within driving distance as well.  The Adirondacks are about a 1 1/2 hour drive, Niagara Falls is about a 3 hour drive from here, and New York City is about 5.  If you want to come up and join us and go off wandering and exploring, I'll have dinner on the table for you when you get back.  smile  Come visit and join us for a little in person Chordie Family Style Gathering!  The closest airport is SYR.  For more specific details, shoot me an email.  We don't have a problem picking people up from the Airport and will drive further than the nearest one.  If you're coming from overseas, we might even go as far as driving out to JFK to get you!  wink

Should no one from Chordie be able to make it, we'll have a blast without ya!  wink  Seriously, we plan to have local friends and family over, so I'm extending this invite to my Chordie Friends as well.  We hope you can come!!

I'll update the specific date as soon as I have responses from those that may be traveling from overseas - If you want to come but your dates are limited and you'd like to help us select a specific date in August, PLEASE DO post a message or send me an email or contact me somehow because all of August is open for us except the last weekend.

So... who's claiming a couch?  Hurry!  Limited Quantities!  tongue

I wish we had PM's - but then my job would probably get a bit more difficult.  I'd need a lot more pickles.  Email is the way to go!  smile

Hmmm... there's no sales of Alcohol in NY before noon on Sunday.  I did look it up and found this, "Alcohol sales for consumption off-premises are not permitted between 3 AM and 8 AM on Sundays, while on-premises sales are not permitted between 4 AM and 8 AM on any day"  - so apparently it's local law that dictates not before noon not state law, but I've never seen a bar or liquor store open before noon on Sunday.

Interesting note to those in other areas might be NY's Liquor Authority:  Grocery stores cannot sell liquor in NY.  The first time I traveled out of state as an adult I was SHOCKED to find liquor in the drug stores and grocery stores.  I saw stores with signs appearing to be liquor stores that, once inside, looked more like mini marts that also sold cheese, band aids, and cigarettes.  In NY, a liquor store is a liquor store.  The only thing they sell is Wine (real wine, not "wine products"), Champagne, and Liquor, and you can't get that at any other type of store.  Note - Beer, and Wine Products (wine coolers, and disgusting things that resemble wine but are not really wine) are not sold in Liquor stores, but are sold in grocery stores, mini marts, and gas stations.  All liquor stores are privately owned.

Yeah Doug, I did catch of whiff of something different for Enterprise Users, although I didn't look in detail on that one yet (no personal need for the info).  I think the plan is to convert all those that refused to give up XP.  I hate 8.1 for that reason you stated, it was designed more for the touch interface.  I think the plan with 10 is to bring back the mouse/keyboard friendliness, while still offering the ease of touch.  I'm with you.  I don't want a 21" touch screen monitor.  I want to sit comfortably a few feet from the monitor personally.  If I want to be close enough to touch the monitor, I grab my tablet or phone.  I have zero plans of ever migrating to a windows based phone.  Which means someday I probably won't use Microsoft because it won't be long until the PC is obsolete anyway.

The only thing that I don't get, is why they aren't planning to upgrade XP users for free?  Those are the "consumers" they need on board who are more likely to jump ship, and as I understand it, once you go to a Mac you won't want to go back.  I'd be there, I just can't afford a Mac (well, maybe if we stopped buying guitars)!

Now, if Google came up with something that wasn't quite so internet dependent... I'd be jumping on that ship.  I just don't think I'm ready to deal with a Chrome Book, although I've considered it quite a few times, as I find 99% of what I do IS actually online.  It's that 1% of software that I use that keeps me on a PC (like recording).

Conclusion for me, if I didn't play guitar, I wouldn't need Microsoft.  Hmmm... ... ... They need to get some music related software included!

Hey Chordies... I love ya's!

Ok, here ya go, from MICROSOFT's Blog Dated 1/21/15:

"Today was a monumental day for us on the Windows team because we shared our desire to redefine the relationship we have with you – our customers. We announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch.*

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no cost. With Windows 10, the experience will evolve and get even better over time. We’ll deliver new features when they’re ready, not waiting for the next major release. We think of Windows as a Service – in fact, one could reasonably think of Windows in the next couple of years as one of the largest Internet services on the planet."

When they say, "as a service" they mean there won't be major SP update packs, it will be more smaller regular updates (free).  As long as you own the OS, you'll be golden.  If you don't upgrade within the first year of it being released, then you'll have to purchase the OS.  So... pretty much, once they release it, you have a year to decide to upgrade or not for free (don't go buying a new computer after that year is up if it doesn't have 10 already installed).  Windows is trying to think like Android.  Users get regular updates to operating systems on their Android device and you never have to pay for the update/upgrade.  It's a "service" provided for free.  This way, the computer manufacturers will be the ones doling out the cash for the operating system, saving us dollars in our pockets.  Of course, Microsoft is still making tons of money.  If having upgraded Windows is cheaper for us, we're more likely to use it, and more "apps" will be added to it making Microsoft more money on the back end that way, the same exact way Android Dev's are making moola.

Personally, I'm considering backing up everything I have and beta testing it before it's released as a stable version.  smile  I HATE the UI of Win 8 THAT much! Anyhow, you've all got like a year and a few months to figure it out 100% and I'm sure Microsoft will be clarifying everything before that time is up, many times over.  I did see some info where people were taking what they said out of context and insinuating it would be a "paid for service" after the free upgrade, so I understand the concern.  My opinion is that it's not.  I could be wrong, I'll admit there's been one or two times when I was.  LOL!  smile

I will look deeper into this. The impression I got was that if you upgrade within the first year it will be free. If you wait it will cost.  Period.  But I will dig deeper for sure! The public release should be this summer, so we've got time!  smile

THANK the powers that be!  They are putting the start menu back and getting rid of the terrible "metro" that I purposely go out of my way to avoid!  YAY!

Just checked into this, it's supposed to be a free upgrade to current 7 and 8 owners for the first year once released.  I signed up for updates from Microsoft, and I'll let ya's know when I see some updates!

Yeppers, I did create a whole video on how to do nail wraps with details on what and where to buy supplies.  You can see that here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XoDnpkPfFQ

Gel Nail Wraps and acrylic are a different beast though than fiber.  Both Gel and Acrylic are things that I wouldn't suggest doing yourself, but they are stronger than fiber.  You'd surely want to go into a nail salon for those (and I'd suggest Gel over Acrylic but since most of you won't go, we won't get into why here).  If you ever heard your Grandma talking about cutting a piece of tea bag and super gluing it to her nail to save a broken nail, that's the same idea as the fiber nail wrap.  If you haven't heard of this, ask some woman over 50 about it.  Or not... but yeah, it's an idea that's been around a long time.  wink  Zurf's explanation was good, " For the life of me, it sounded like a fiberglass & resin buildup for canoe repairs. "  The fiberglass and resin isn't as thick as you'd think it would be.  If you really want to grow your nails though, just go start taking prenatal vitamins!  Ha ha ha!  OH - and don't bother trying to just glue a fake nail on.  It won't stay.  Those are meant to be glued on and then covered with acrylic.  wink

OK... back on topic... Zurf, I like those picks!  They are pretty neat, and look like they'd work really well.  I think my nails are about that length (as shown in TF's pic), maybe a little shorter.  I personally find that sometimes I like to pick the strings with my finger pad, other times the nail.  I've seen some basic finger picks and thought, "Holy Hell those are long!  How could someone play with those?  I can't button my pants with nails that long, how could someone pick a guitar?" -- so, I think you're onto something good with these!!  Keep us updated on how it's working for you.  At one point I liked thumb picks a LOT.  Sounds like you found a seriously low profile pick.  I've considered filing mine down and trying it again.  If I were unable to grow my nails for some reason, I would absolutely run out and buy some of those picks 12 string or not!

I owe you one more package still.  wink  Though you do realize that I have no need for money for a used slide and a few picks, I've got to send you something that I can place a dollar value on!
