I think that in D the one I looked at in chordie says it should be a Bbm and I agree this doesn't sound right. The rest sounds good. I had a listen to the original on Youtube and I figured out why. It is Tab'ed out there so you don't play a chord if you want to sound like Van Morrison. Have a listen and see for yourself. The tabs are easy enough to figure out so I will let you. If you play a chord for it then Bm is the closest you will get but Van M. Tabs it- goodluck

This song came about from being asked countless times my favorite job interview question, 'What do you want to do?'

I Just Want Something By Jeff Gilpin

October 4th, 2010

Intro -  strumming  D

[D]I don’t want to un[G]nerve you

But I [C]observe you [G]

Don’t seem [D]happy

See if you were in [G]my shoes

Sharing [C]my blues [G]

I might seem [D]sappy

But I just want [C]something

Something that [G]I can [C]

Say this is my [D]life

I just want [C]something

Something that [G]I can [C]

Say this is my [D]life

It seemed like for [G]so long

I was part of the [C]working throng [G]

Punching a [D]clock

Then someone made a [G]decision

Got my re[C]vision [G]

Told me to [D]walk

Now I just want [C]something

Something that [G]I can [C]

Say this is my [D]life

I just want [C]something

Something that [G]I can [C]

Say this is my [D]life

So now I’m trying to [G]find me

Something I [C]can see [G]

Me fitting [D]in

It’s hard for me to [G]answer

Questions that can [C]steer [G]

my new be[D]gin

‘Cause I just want [C]something

Something that [G]I can [C]

Say this is my [D]life

I just want [C]something

Something that [G]I can [C]

Say this is my [D]life

I think what I want is [G]simple

Something that [C]can fill [G]

Me up with [D]pride

Could be just helping [G]others

My sisters and [C]brothers [G]

Who need a [D]ride

I just want [C]something

Something that [G]I can [C]

Say this is my [D]life

I just want [C]something

Something that [G]I can [C]

Say this is my [D]life

Hey Roger - Very sweet song - You taught me a new chord too. Bbm...I like it and have to use it more.

Yeah, facebook has helped me get reacquainted with some of my friends from the past. I haven't found the girl from the song (not the one I married) but I'm sure she is okay. She called me a few years after I was married and wanted to come visit me in Germany but I let her know I was married with children at the time so a visit was not a great idea. That was back in 1984 and I haven't heard from her since.

Thanks Dan - I'll have to listen to the Death Cab song - I like what I have heard from them but I haven't heard that one. As I told Roger, I'm I have people living in what was my recording studio right now so my recording stuff has been broken up for their move in and I would have to set it back up in another location with worse acoustics. I cannot afford some of the professional work I have done in the past so it will be scratches when I get to them.

On the button with the girl I met in Omaha. I was just trying to break up the song a little with the different tune in the chorus. How does the chorus look now? I adjusted it a little. Recordings are delayed due to an extended house guest stay (taking my recording space)...and a constant stream of short term visitors but it will be added to my list.

This is just a song about life. You meet quite a few forgettable people in life but one or two keepers.

Hey Roger - Thanks. I need to set up my studio somewhere else. My daughter and her family (2 kids and boyfriend) have taken over my basement until he lanes back on his feet. The rest of the acoustics in the house are not good and it will be the ole set it up and break it down routine which forces me to rush through the recording.

Thanks Dan - Yep, the layoff sucks but it has helped me write more songs lately. Glad you found something. I am still looking but things are looking better.  Chordie is a great place for creativity.

Hey Ian - Sad and sweet. A road I have been down early in life so I can relate. I'd really love to hear it so good luck getting it recorded.

Hey Dan, I'm a sucker for story songs and this is a good one. I would sure love to hear how it really goes so if you get the chance to record it let me know.

Surprisingly enough I am a Redskins fan but I also like the J-E-T-S...and whoever the Cowboys are playing.

Hey Dan,

You combined two of my favorite song topics into one: Cowboys and looking back at lost loves. I like the key change to the chorus that shows the lonesome cowboy's mind going to a different place than his camp. Great song.

Hey Dan, Lovely words there that I can relate to. I did have trouble with the chords. Reminds me of some of the piano tunes that have been converted to guitar that I can never figure out (I'm partial to Leon Russell and Michael Franks). If you get the chance to record this I would sure like to hear how it goes.

Thanks Dino and Dan. I like nothing better having a cool breeze blowing on a sunny day while I’m napping in a hammock under a shade tree. Dan, my teams are the Redskins, DC United and Leeds United. I was staying up late to watch the Redskins pull off a 13-7 squeaker against the Cowboys. DC United won 1-0 away against Toronto (one of their few wins this season) and Leeds United is doing well in the English 2nd division (called the Championship) and they won against Swansea 2-1. This all normally would have lifted my spirits but life has been throwing me some curve balls lately.

Hey Robert - It's a scary world out there for women and the fathers, brothers and uncle's who care and worry about them. I believe fathers have a closer relationship with their daughters than their sons because they already know how boys think. Good song, Robert. I am wondering how I will feel when my grandaughter grows to the age when boys will be interested in her. Scares me just thinking about it....

This is a song about enjoying the changing of seasons. I really love it when summer transitions to fall. It reminds me of playing football, both American and European.  It is also about when other problems in life are occupying your mind you have difficulty enjoying your favorite things.
