Topic: THE GHOST OF JACK DANIELS

THE GHOST OF JACK DANIELS rock’n’country

[A]On a cold windy night, in a [D]dark Tennessee town,

I was [E]cleaning up the bar, getting [A]ready to shut’r down.

[A]When in walked a gentleman, well [D]dressed, tall and proud,

He was [E]weathered and grey, you could [A]tell he’d been around.

[A]He said his name was Jack, that [D]he was just lookin’ around,

To [E]share some old stories, and [A]throw a few whiskies down.

[A]He hitched up to the bar, I [D]finished my last round,

As [E]He began to speak, on his [A]brow there came a frown.

[A]He told me tales, of [D]brave hearted men,

Who [E]rode the horse of justice, who [A]never came back again.

[A]He talked about old Wyatt, about [D]Frank and Jesse James,

The [E]Youngers and John Tunstill, [A]Billy Bonny and his gang.

chorus

I [D]rode with Cole Younger, [E]in his Quantrell days.

[D]I was with young Jesse, [E]on the Northfield raid.

[D]Honour, respect and pride, are [E]hard to find these days.

There are [D]few men today, with the [E]courage …to be [A]brave.

[A]We fought against the Barons, we [D]fought the bankers to,

[E]We fought against the men, who [A]told us what to do.

[A]When you take a mans freedom, you [D]take away his life,

you [E]take away the only thing he has, that [A]keeps his soul alive.

[A]After many years of travels, of [D]bramble, wind and rain,

My [E]kind are few and scattered, and [A]numbered are our days.

[A]The last of a dying breed, are the [D]men I’ve known with pride.

[E]We stood tall together, while [A]others around us died.

[A]So one more shot bartender, [D]Old No. 7 please,

For [E]all of those behind us, who [A]left us with this creed.

[A]Now the whiskey bottle is empty, as the [D]ballads, dirges and hymns,

I’ll[E]never forget that mans face, the [A]one on the bottle looks a lot like him.

Re: THE GHOST OF JACK DANIELS

Hi Johnny,

I too like a narrative song and what better than the old wild west to write about. I had to drop it to G to sing it comfortably but I struggled a bit with the phrasing on a few lines so I shall probably give it another whirl on Monday when I have my recording gear to hand to see if I can get it right.

Talking of recording smile, are we going to have one from you so we know how it should be?

Re: THE GHOST OF JACK DANIELS

Yea you're right Roger. Yu kinda gotta run your lips over it pretty quick in places don'tcha. I try to growl out the bottom end of the "A" The place I was headed to was if you can hear a collision between Nickelback and Great Big Sea. Growled out steady bangin' through the verses, comeing up high and big during the chorus, with harmonies and big drums. Accousticly it's "American Pie" at double tempo. I don't have the ways and means to record that I used to but will try to put together something.
Thanks for your comments
JV

What a great write, it really is excellent, nostalgia and a way of life that is now gone.
