He wasn't so perfect, which president is
But the blame for our problems isn't entirely his
So let us recall the War in Iraq
Both liberals and GOP's were voting for that
And you know, there was something quite curious to find
Barack Obama voted for the war, then changed his mind
And maybe, just maybe, some fine day we'll see
Ol' Dubya's desicisions proved right by history

The Most Skipped Step Is The Basic Teaching The Name Of The Strings,And Notes Of Each String Per Fret.

knowing E shaped bar chords and A shaped barchords.
Yup I'm starting to get him used to naming different notes. I'm trying to get him used to connecting the music theory he learned when he took piano lessons to guitar.

Thanks everyone. I think that once he gets those basic open chords down, I'll start showing him some actual songs, then try to explain what chords, scales, etc that song uses.

I'm starting to teach my brother guitar, and I'm just wondering what the best way to do this is without causing him to lost interest. He used to play a little bit, so he can manipulate his fingers better than the average begginer can, but he hasn't played in a year or so. I'm starting out by reviewing some open chords, and I'm having him practice fingering and switching between them on his own. If anyone has any tips on how to keep his interest in this, I'd appreciate it a lot. He definitely has an interest, but the hard part (as with anyone) is the practicing. Thanks!

Re: Different tuning (15 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure that's not very fun to deal with. The best advice I can give is to expiriment with some open tunings (you could learn to play slide) or, if it's easier, you could attempt to learn to play left-handed (you'll need a new guitar of course). Best of luck!

Topic: Good solos for practicing on (4 replies, posted in Electric)
I'm looking to improve my soloing techniques. Can anyone reccomend some good blues or classic rock style songs or even just solos that would make for good practice to improve my note choices, phrasing, picking, bends, etc? I've been messing around with some of the pentatonic scales as well, but does anyone have any practical applications for these? Thanks everyone

How do I get that "ambience" effect into my list of effects on Audacity? After listening to my recording of Tears In Heaven with the ambience applied to it, I think that it would be great to use on my future acoustic recordings.

Re: burrs..... (7 replies, posted in Acoustic)
I think everyone has that same problem when they first start out, although it may be more difficult for some. The only advice I can give is to stretch out your fingers and to try as hard as possible to use the very tips of your fingers (for open chords, which I'm assuming is what you're learning, ie G, A, C, D, E, and their variants). For me, I kept practicing that, and eventually (I didn't really notice) my chords just all of a sudden were ringing clear. Good luck!

Re: Favorite bands and songs (13 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
Skillet is awesome if you like heavier stuff. They're somewhere between alternative rock and metal. John Cooper's vocals are right up there with the best, and the guitar work is pretty cool, too, usually in drop-D or drop-B. The albums "Collide" and "Comatose" are really good.

I have Martin Clapton signatures 12-56's on my acoustic and Dean-Markley Yngwie Malmsteen 8-46's on my electric. I think that next time I will go back to Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkys (9-46).

Re: ABOUT DROP D (3 replies, posted in Music theory)
Most of my acoustic playing is done fingerstyle, and I love playing in drop-D. Fingerstyle allows you to get so much more out of the chords or notes you play than using a pick does, like only playing certain notes together, harmonics mixed with bass notes, etc. From what I've heard, usually open tunigs are especially suited for slide playing, although I do know of some fingerstyle songs in open D, and acutally "Heartache Tonight" by the Eagles and "Start Me Up" by the Stones are in open G I believe. One of my favorite fingerstyle tunings to use on acoustic is where I drop the low E string down to an A, a full octave below the A 5th string. This allows me to get some really cool piano-esque notes into my chords.

Re: LYRICS (26 replies, posted in Recording)
Writing lyrics is not the problem for me, it's singing them. It's very frusterating when you write lyrics and you have this great idea in your head of how they'll sound, and then you try to sing them the way you want them to sound, and blehhhhhh.

Here's something different: pick out some of your favorite musicians that you think might sound good together and make your ultimate rock band. If the musician isn't that well known of a name, tell which band they're from. Here's mine:
Two lead guitars: Angus Young and James Young (Styx)
Two rythym guitars: Eric Clapton and Brian May-Clapton would also be the lead acoustic player
Lead vocals: Dennis DeYoung (Styx) and Freddie Mercury
Bass: Paul McCartney
Drums: Bob Burns (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

Yep, I sold it via Craigslist back in November to a guy in North Carolina. I got what I wanted, $300 for it. Now I'm the proud owner of a beautiful flame-top Ibanez RG. I wish I could have kept the Dano, but I wanted a new guitar, and I didn't have the money to be buying a new one without selling it.

Re: The distortion "sound" I'm looking for (15 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
As strange as it sounds you can actually get a crisper, fuller distortion sound by simply turning the gain(distortion) down and turning the volume up. If you have your gain at 100% and your volume at 20%, you're gonna get an irritating, skinny, little buzzing noise, like a gnat flying around your ear. Try backing off of the gain to around 40-60% and pump up your volume to around the same(40-60%). I betcha you're gonna like the tone. Give it a try..........
Well, I've tried this, and it doesn't seem to work too well. Right now my settings seem to get me a decent sound, but I can mess around with my settings a little more.

Re: The distortion "sound" I'm looking for (15 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Well the thing is when I got this amp, it was with my first electric guitar, and I didn't know what kind sounds I was going to want. But yeah, I'm going to look into some heavier-distortion pedals like the Digitech Grunge and the Boss Metalzone. Thanks

Re: The distortion "sound" I'm looking for (15 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I only have one EQ knob on my overdrive channel called "shape" which I believe controls the mids, and I usually play with it turned all the way up. If I roll back on it, I get more of a classic rock tone, and I can get a somewhat-blusey sound if I take enough gain off. What I'm looking for is more distortion, because I can't turn the volume up much past 2 when I have the gain cranked as high as it will go. With the gain at 10, I can get into some Black Sabbath-early metal territory, but not much more.

Re: The distortion "sound" I'm looking for (15 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
I like the Metalzone, but I can't really justify spending $90 on a pedal, because I don't have $90 for a pedal, and convincing my parents I "need" one would take some work, especially since it's right after Christmas right now. That said, the Digitech Grunge looks like a great pedal; I'd love to try one out if I could. It sells for $50 on Musician's Friend. I've read some really good reviews on it.

It's a 30 watt Crate combo with chorus and reverb. Yeah, I've played on one of those Line 6 Spider III's, and you can get almost any sound through one of those.

Re: Dream guitar (16 replies, posted in Chordie's Chat Corner)
Since I first started playing on my Rogue acoustic my dream was to own a real "player's" electric instrument; now I own a beautiful Ibanez RG. Still have the Rogue, but now my "dream guitar" is a Martin acoustic-electric. Even the cheapest one, which I had a chance to borrow from someone and play all summer, sounds amazing. I can only imagine what the expensive ones sound like.
