Start with telling us who do you like to listen to.  The members here will have lots of suggestions.  Also if you're just starting out, watch Justinguitar on Youtube and you'll learn a lot of stuff.  Welcome to Chordie and good luck.

I'd also recommend practicing the Bm in the meanwhile.  It's in all sorts of songs and will come in handy.

I'm gonna go with Zurf on this one.  Plus you're going to be pleased with Bm after a reasonable short amount of practice.  Good luck.

Hmm definitely Grace Slick.

Way to go Pix, that's a great site I hadn't seen.  Then if lilwing will have a look at the guitarsage below it's a lesson to the same version:

Hey Joe (sounded musical, sorry!)
Welcome to CHORDIE.
I use a Sabine STX1100 for about 5 yrs.  Should cost less than $30 at some places.  It can clip right onto the music stand and very reliable easy to see led lights.  Korg has some good stuff too.  Just try not to buy the $15 entry unit as they will disappoint.
Since you're nearby, keep in touch.

Hi Will
I checked it out and that's great looking guitar.  Welcome to Chordie!  Your friends are right it will just get better over time.  Meantime, when trying barre chords remember to pinch with both the thumb and index finger.  Not just pressing with index finger.  Also you may find putting a capo on the 3rd fret will bring your hand close enough to get the feel of it better early on.  Then move the capo as your strength and agility increases.  Good luck.

Deadstring,

I think your best bet will be to use a non powered mixer.  There are some available with 4 to 5 inputs for less than $ 50. I have been told trying to Y them doesn't work but I have never tried it. With a mixer you open yourself up to more options for the future. If you get a backup singer you will have an extra input for another mic for guitar too. Just depends on if your amp has enuff power to handle the load.

Yeah, I think Wayne's got it right.  The y connector will suffice somewhat for the time being though if you need to wait.  I found when a friend stops in I had limited inputs.  Using the y connector you wrestle with different signal loss and signal balance issues.  At GC I found a negotiated price of about $75 for this mixer ... if I did it right picture below:

Merry Christmas all.

For me no music gear, but the computer is spankin' new and replaces my dinosaur.  Emachines 4 Gb ram, 750 Gb hard drive, love it.  Right away I'm enjoying the net and music much finer than before.  But I know ya'll got some nice toys.  Extra credit for photos.  Come on, put 'em up.

Hey welcome Don.  I too was blown away by the skills that an accomplished guitarist can demonstrate on a looper.  KT Tunstall was made famous by Black Horse and a Cherry Tree, but later on I stumbled on this one and it just shows how there are a whole arsenal of tricks that can be employed to captivate the audience.  This one's Howie Day.....  I bought a Boss RC-2 myself for $155 on Ebay and it was a very good investment.  No regrets.

Have to agree with Manic
Washburn... not exactly a cheap and nasty brand...

Have to agreen Washburn makes mostly good stuff.  I've bought two and no complaints.

Whole idea isn't to cut down some good entry level stuff,  but to steer away from imitation guitars and amps.

That's a nice guitar!  What amp are you playing it thru?
Steve

I'm posting because I was in ToysRUs and a young mother is holding a toy electric guitar and she's on the cell phone to (I'm assuming) the dad saying "I'm PRETTY SURE it's REAL, because it's heavy."  Not picking on off name brands here, just suspecting a lot of parents want to get a music gift on a budget.

So don't shop for an instrument from a place with no guitarists on the staff.

Yep, try Clapton's Wonderful Tonight.   One of you does the strumming and the other does arpeggio's.

The capo is your solution.  If you're a Buffet fan, It's Five O'clock Somewhere works good with two guys.

Don't give up, because if you'll bear it out the two of you both get some learning you won't get otherwise.  And hard as it is to take criticism you'll do well to learn how to share that.

I have to second that Pix.  DDUUDU fits a lot of songs for me as well.
Steve

It's a good song Superman.

It's 4/4 count so you're looking for a rhythm that keeps repeating 1&2&3&4 for chord movements.

Try one of two patterns whichever you feel comfortable with.
1     2         3     4
D D U UDU  D D U UDU

or

1       2       3       4
D DU D DU D DU D

I hope that helps.
