My wife and I actually had plans to visit NZ about 10 years ago. We were going to do some trout fishing and horseback riding, and spend a couple weeks there. Some health issues came about, and it probably won't happen now ... but who knows? If we avoided fishing in the snow, we'd miss some of the biggest trout to be caught all year. The largest ones spend the winter inland, and then head for the estuaries once things start to warm up. Just need to dress properly for wading in cold water, and everything's fine.

The weekend fishing wasn't much good. Several sub-zero nights and snowfall last week formed large ice shelves along the banks of the 4 rivers we visited, so that we couldn't safely get to the water. The good news is that this week is supposed to be milder with some warm rain, so next weekend should be a better scenario.

Welcome to Chordie, Marshel ... and kudos to UJB for bringing you along.

Many guitarists have to make modifications to their playing style as time goes by to cope with things like CTS, arthritis (in my case), hand injuries, etc. The good news is that it can be done, and your PT should be able to recommend exercises which will be helpful. The hardest part is changing the way we've programmed our brain. Unlearning one habit in order to learn another requires some hard work. But since you enjoy playing ... that will be a labor of love. Here's a fairly in-depth article which you may find useful:

I agree with TIG, that your talent with guitars AND kitchen appliances could go perfectly together, in a new line of appliance-based amplifier platforms. For example:

1) Small Personal Practice Amp (5 watts - 1x8" speaker)

2) Portable Band Practice Amp (15-20 watts - 1x12" speaker)

3) Club / Small Venue (50-75 watts - 4x12" speakers)

Glad your second knee replacement went so well, DE ... good to get out and about again I'll bet. Found this guy on the Internet when I googled your name ... look familiar?

Hope you have a great opening day TF.

My new knee (7 weeks old) and I took one of my kayaks out yesterday for a short float on a local stream.  Water was a little high and stained, visibility about 6" and temp around 46 degrees F.  I didn't get a single hit in about 2 hours of fishing.  However, with warmer weather on the way, stream temps should hit the magic 55 degree mark in another week or so,  waking up the smallies. smile

Jethro Tull    "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day"    London, 1977

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq-bcFOI56E

This classic piece features the band mates playing each others instruments which they don't normally play. It was originally released on the 1974 album "War Child", and has become a staple at concerts ever since. The introspective lyrics are terrific, for example:

"Do you ever get to feel that the story's too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage and you're the only person sitting in the audience?"

The back of the album was interesting, with the band members, production staff, and their wives / girlfriends all dressed up as characters from all of the album's songs, including Ian Anderson's future-wife Shona as the ring mistress:

I'm jittery like a kid before Christmas!

Our fishing season starts on April 1, and with my new knee (done Dec 5, 2016) working great, I'm incredibly excited. There's still some snow on the ground, and most lakes are still frozen over, but the rivers are running. Early season requires some special prep to stay warm and dry, but this is usually when the biggest sea trout are still in the rivers, as well as some small Atlantic salmon.

Soooooo excited!

Although I don't fully understand what your new gadget does, I am very impressed that you were able to create some living quarters within your music room! lol I guess the phrase "Music is your life" truly applies ... nice setup, Russell.

Tobias Rauscher   "Off the Path"   (original composition & performance)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vReZjXOuzDc

Hier gibt es noch viel mehr Gitarre aus Deutschland. Germany's Tobias Rauscher shows some more of his skill, with this lively piece. The words on his little lamp behind him say "Be the First", but I have no idea what he's referring to ... my German is very rusty.

Tangerine Dream    "Cloudburst Flight"    Lisbon, 2010

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdNj9O1xaY0

This is an updated version of a track from their 1979 album "Force Majeure". It features some more of Bernhard Beibl's terrific guitar work throughout the middle of the song. I once had the clear-cut vinyl edition "back in the day", and found this pic of that edition on the internet below. We all used to get excited about these oddities when they were released. Enjoy the music!

Welcome to Chordie, ARDNAS!

I hope whatever therapy you choose for your CTS gives you positive results. As life goes on, these kinds of things rear their heads and give us new obstacles to overcome. Arthritis  has affected my finger-speed quite a bit, but as BGD has properly said, we can always adapt and find other (more efficient) ways of playing. I've personally found that the neck angle matters a lot, i.e., 45-degree angled upwards, and not level with the floor.

Keep at it ... we hope a serious health issue like this doesn't compromise your enjoyment of playing.

Strings mainly need changing because of the oils & dead skin that gets lodged in the winding. This causes them to start sounding dead with reduced sustain. The un-wound strings will start to tarnish just from being exposed to air. Coated strings (like Elixir Nano-Web, Martin LifeSpan, D'Addario EXP, etc.) can last up to 3-months before changing, but I've found that uncoated strings can't go much more than a month before losing their brightness. Once a person finds the string they like for a particular guitar, most of them can be bought in multi-packs, so the cost is reduced considerably.

Love the gas heater idea!

My version is to fire up the propane BBQ while working in the shed, and just be careful with sawdust, what kinds of containers are left open, etc. No need for anything goes boom (as Jayne would say). big_smile However, it's only a short-term solution, so wouldn't work for round-the-clock needs.

My favorite glue for this type if thing is "Old Brown Glue" by Antique Refinishers Inc. It's a hide glue which takes a long time to set up (24 hours minimum at room temp), but makes a real solid bond. It also won't interfere with finishes when little bits of it squeeze out while the project is clamped. Most wood glues (Elmer's, LePages, etc.) will glaze the surface they touch, and no amount of sanding will get rid of the carrier agent. This really shows up when staining, and just makes a mess. It's quicker, but the problems it produces are permanent ... okay for out-of-sight or solid paint finishes. Same thing happens with urethanes like Gorilla Glue.

What an awesome color scheme, Beamer ... thanks!

But I'm an old fart, so I plan to do something more subdued. I'm no "Optimus" as a guitar player, and I'm way past my "Prime". lol

1) The cabs will be made out of 3/4" maple plywood, and I'll use my router & jig to dovetail the joints for strength. The head will be 10"H x 26.5"W x 12" D. The speaker cab will be 32"H x 26.5"W x 12"D. The width is determined by the existing size of my Peavey, so that the hardware will slide in and fit properly, without undue fuss (as Malcolm Reynolds would say).

2) The wood will be stained with a charcoal grey stain, so the grain will be seen clearly. After that, about 4 - 5 coats of Varathane's "Diamond Coat" water-based semi-gloss finish. I built an all-oak stairway system in our split entry home almost 10 years ago, and used this stuff on it. The treads show very little sign of wear yet ... awesome product!

3) The cabs will have all matte black hardware (handles, corners, etc.) and matte black grille cloth, to match the existing face on the Peavey which I'll re-use. The back will be solid, but I plan to add 2 angled ports on each side for sound distribution ... something like BOSE does with their sound systems. The guts are a 100-watt all-tube system, with the 2 x 12" speakers I put in it last year.

If I can get someone do the "TF" plates in a smokey chrome color, that would be my first choice, but a brushed aluminum or steel will also do fine. They have to be fairly good sized plates though ... at least 3" x 3" or more. My workshop has no heat, so it'll be at least 8 weeks before it's warm enough to start this. Only in Canada, eh?

Iona    "Inside My Heart"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAVkXtAP3yo

Another great tune by this Irish Prog / Gospel / Celtic band, who have been at it since 1990. This song features an almost 3-minute guitar solo at the end by David Bainbridge which is freakin' amazing! This track is from their 1996 album "Journey Into the Morn", which Bainbridge also produced. I know I'd need an ice-bag for my hand if I even attempted something like this ... enjoy!

Welcome to Chordie!

I couldn't find a song by him of that exact name, but there's one of his called "Nightcrawler" ... if that's what you mean. Here's a link to it from another website:
