Thomas Leeb   "Akaskero"   (original composition & performance)

A beautifully atmospheric piece from Thomas, again showcasing his delicate touch and technique. And it's easy to imagine laying in the grass at a riverside ..

Love it!

I plan to build a separate head & speaker cabinet for my Peavey VK212 when my woodshop is warm enough to work in, because as a combo amp it's too dang heavy to lug around. I think I'll try to score a couple of TF logos like my avatar (it's the "Transfomers" logo from the movies) and re-badge my new creation with them.

Thanks for the inspiration, Beamer!

That's a nice little travel guitar, kind of like some of the parlour guitars I've seen. Hope you like the feel and sound of it.

Good album selection, Badeye.

I didn't listen to all of it, but there's lots of cool stuff on there I'd never heard before. And that's quite a list of names, TIG ... some of them remind me of Cheech & Chong's "Blind Melon Chitlins".

Here you go ... JJJ!

That's a sweet looking axe ... Happy NGD. I've often coveted a Gretsch Duo-Jet, which has the same electronics plus a Bigsby, but isn't quite as flashy.

Genesis    "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight"    Shepperton, Surrey, England, 1973

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPm62PqLk34

Here's Peter Gabriel at the height of his theatrical self. His predisposition for this kind of thing made keyboardist Tony Banks and bassist Mike Rutherford quite uneasy, and in most live film from this era, you'll often find them exchanging disapproving glances while Peter was goofing off. Their 1973 album "Selling England by the Pound" featured this song, as well as some of the best music of that incarnation of the group.

Of particular note is a few segments where guitarist Steve Hackett is seen doing what we now call "tapping" (he called it "nailing"). He was the first guitarist to employ this technique, which is also heard on their 1971 album "Nursery Cryme". Later guitarists used it with greater abundance, most notably Eddie Van Halen. In an interview, Eddie declared that Hackett had invented the technique, but we all know that he, Angus Young, Gary Moore, and others took it to a whole different level.

Very cool Gibson "Explorer" shape ... you must be very excited to get it home. Does it have the "hockey stick" head stock? And I'm wondering about how the body shape affects how long a guitar strap is needed ... lots of lumber for it to get around on the bottom end.

Great picking, and lots of fun! Ms. Quevedo has lots of finger-style covers up on YouTube, and she's an exceptionally talented young lady ... enjoy!

Hello, jcellini ... and welcome to Chordie!

Chordie doesn't host pics, so they'll need to be online somewhere, so you can then embed the link as follows:

My own preference for uploading photos is Google's Picasa, but there are also several other very good ones. I found this stock photo of your guitar online, and just gotta say "Wow!" Congratulations, and Happy NGD!

Another quieter, moody piece from Quidam's "Strong Together" live DVD, with a Celtic feel. Love this group! This is the title track from their 2009 CD ... very compelling artwork:

Dire Straits   "Sultans of Swing"   (arranged & performed by Andrea Valeri)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KsVtD01cgw

Introducing Italian guitarist Andrea Valeri. He began playing at 13-years-old, and in just 3 years he caught the attention of the great Tommy Emmanuel. He was encouraged to pursue music as a career, and released two full albums before turning 20. Now at just 26 years old, he is considered on of the top fingerstylists in the world.

This is a completely awesome topic ... I bow to you, Sir Phill !

I have four crap-shows in mind:

a) Joe Cocker (Halifax, mid-70's)
He was so drunk that he barely got through 3 or 4 songs. He then tried to climb into the back of his piano, and a couple of roadies had to free him from his predicament. The concert came to a close, and we were all eventually refunded for our tickets. He acted like a pompous idiot during his 10-minutes on stage, and I have no respect for him as a result.

b) Seals & Crofts / Nazareth (Halifax, mid-70's)
What kind of promoter books S&C to open for Nazareth? Halfway through their 3rd song, the audience booed them off the stage, and Nazareth came on for a terrific performance.  It was a weird experience.

c) April Wine (Montreal, mid-70's)
The sound system blended everything into a wall of noise, with no one instrument being discernible from the rest. I give the sound people 0/10 for their part. When lead-singer Myles Goodwin stepped to the front of the stage, he played the worst guitar solo I've ever heard by anyone claiming to be a professional. Missed notes, dropped pick twice, and just plain dreadful. We were about 15-feet away from him, and we all booed him at the top of our lungs. He cut it short, and we all cheered. Pretty cruel, but he should have left the lead guitar work to Gary Moffatt (who was quite good).

d) Rockin' the Island (Baddeck, Cape Breton, mid-70's)
An outdoor weekend concert with 6 or 8 decent bands was advertised, and we bought tickets and went. We got there, saw the stage, lighting, PA system all set up, so we pitched our tents along with hundreds of others. No bands ever showed up, and no explanation was ever given. A bunch of people trashed the stage setup, but we just left.

Pink Floyd    "On the Turning Away"    New York, 1988

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZLuDvN7W0c

The 1988 live album "Delicate Sound of Thunder" was compiled from shows in New York, and engineered at Abbey Rd. This particular song is from their 1987 album "A  Momentary Lapse of Reason". This was one of the three post-Roger Waters albums, which I feel were just as good as their previous ones ... this song is further evidence. The solo portion (second half of song) is a showcase for the amazing Fender "Fat 50's" pickups, my favorite single-coil pups of all time. They solo clearly and growl loudly!

A very "Mediterranean" feel to this piece from Eva. Superb guitarist from Greece, who successfully blends a variety of styles and techniques into her work ... love the originality.

No one's more thankful for YouTube than myself, and I really enjoy watching concerts of my favorite groups / musicians more than anything else on TV. Living in a small town in a small province of eastern Canada, we're a long trip to any venues where bigger groups would play. Here are my "Top 10" favorite concerts that I would have loved to attend:

1) Jethro Tull  -  "Stormwatch" tour  -  Madison Square Gardens, 1978
2) Pink Floyd  -  "Pulse"  -  Earl's Court, 1994
3) Steve Hackett  -  "Genesis Revisited" tour  -  Royal Albert Hall, 2012
4) David Gilmour  -  "On an Island" tour  -  Gdansk Shipyard, 2008
5) Porcupine Tree  -  "Fear of a Blank Planet" tour  -  Tilburg, 2010
6) Yes  -  "Symphonic" tour - Amsterdam, 2003
7) Peter Gabriel  -  "Secret World" tour  -  Modena, Italy, 1993
8) Rush  -  "Clockwork Angels" tour  -  Cleveland, 2012
9) Led Zeppelin  -  "Celebration Day"  -  London, 2007
10) Tangerine Dream  -  "Electric Mandarine" tour  -  Zurich, 2012

Yup, very glad for YouTube and a decent sound system. Anyone else want to share their regrets?

Classic quality ... good choice. The drummer looks uncomfortable, as if his throne needs to be jacked up a few inches ... maybe just the camera angles.

The pots in my Les Paul were starting to get scratchy, and one of the tone pots up 'n' died about a year ago. I was told by a local guitar tech to replace them all with CTS pots, and he gave me some reasons why they're superior to the stock stuff they put in Epiphone guitars.

Just got it back from him this morning, and they are indeed much quieter than the old ones. They're push-pulls on the volume ones (my pups are 4-wire for coil-splitting) and the CTS pots are much smoother for this, and don't make a loud "clack" when I pull or push them. My old pots also had a significant volume drop when I switched to single-coil, but these not nearly so much ... and both are supposedly 500k pots. Weird.

At first blush, the CTS pots do seem to be much better quality. big_smile

It's so great, JJJ, that you're taking steps to address the causes, and not just the symptoms. Atta boy! This adjustment period - along with the guitar apathy - will pass, and you'll soon be enjoying it from a whole new perspective. If your experience turns out like mine, you'll look back someday with a lot of satisfaction with your accomplishments. Hold your head up, buddy!

Marillion    "Three Minute Boy"    Zelande, Netherlands, 2011

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpTf4dBlAHM

Here's a candidate for the "Best Audience Participation" award, if there is such a thing. Singer Steve Hogarth has a real knack for audience chemistry, and these "Marillion Weekends" are a unique event they've been doing for several years with great success. And as a guitarist, Steve Rothery's solo (begins at around 4:10) is amazing. The big man sure knows his way around a fretboard, and is - IMHO - terribly unknown and under-rated. The fickleness of the pop music industry is well expressed in this song, which is a track from their 1998 CD entitled "Radiation".
