Greetings Chef!  Although i do not play tenor guitar, here is a link to an artist who does play tenor (along with fiddle).  Great stuff - give it a look-see:

Yep, "Hot Monkey Love" is definately the basis for a song.  It's just an old expression that I had never really thought about . . . another obvious idea staring me right in the face.

So, give it a go everyone!  See what comes to mind . . .

Roger - I just worked my way through your chord changes on "How I Love You".  Very interesting progression - I really like the cycle.  To my ears though it has a very funereal or solemn feel - perhaps the lady you wrote it for just got a little spooked!

Here are some links you may find to be useful.  There are very many songwriting sites out there.  Be wary of anyone who wants money to enter a song into a contest.  Many of these sites have good advice and pointers -

Methinks perhaps there is a size limit to what can be uploaded to the forum.  I am no technical expert, but that might be the problem . . . If the recording is available elsewhere on the web (MySpace or YouTube or a personal website) just post a link to it.

Greetings mdey2010!  Try this for posting your songs:

Use curly brackets {} to  enclose the commands:

{t:Song Title}

{st:Sub Title}

{c:comment}

{soc} start of chorus

{eoc} end of chorus

Use the straight brackets [] to enclose chords within your lyrics.

To post your songs on the forum, position this just before your song's title . . . .

open straight bracketSONGclose straight bracket

(note the uppercase).

At the end of your song, put this . . . .

open straight bracket/SONGclose straight bracket

Hope this helps - James

Most excellent song, rogerguppy!  If this song didn't melt her heart, then that's her problem . . . It seems to be a very sincere and passionate expression of true love - but perhaps all she was looking for was hot monkey love!

Hello David 137 - Here  is a link that might help.  Sometimes the simplest questions lead to the most complex answers.  Basically, chords within a certain key work well together . . .

<a href="http://www.torvund.net/guitar/progressions/index.asp" target="_blank">http://www.torvund.net/guitar/progressions/index.asp</a>

To best answer this simple question, it is necessary to talk in terms of basic music theory.  This site offers some good insight, however it may seem confusing at first.  Be patient and sort your way through the site.

The good news is that since you have been playing music for a while, you probably already have a 'gut' understanding of what works.

As Ken (upyerkilt) stated earlier in this thread, sometimes it's useful to just 'borrow' chords and a melody and a lyric meter that somebody else has used.  Here is a song I just finished that is a direct 'borrowing' of John Mayer's "Waiting For the World to Change".

I was attracted to this tune because of the elegantly simple chord structure and the great rhythm of the lyric - so I fit my own words into the basic framework.

Perhaps some of the other family guys (and gals) out there will identify with the sentiment of my version of the song?

{t:While the Kids are Away}

{st:by James McCormick, January 26, 2007}

{c:based on the melody & meter of "Waiting for the World to Change" by John Mayer}

We can [C]talk and laugh all [Am]evening, we can [F]dance the hours a-[C]way

Our [G]house is like a [Am]beach resort where [F]we can both just [C]play

The [C]kids are gone we're [Am]here alone, the [F]silence seems so [C]strange

Let's [D]open up a [Am]little wine, re-[F]lax, and ease the [C]strain

{soc}

Let's have a [C]date, [Am]darlin', while the [F]kids are a-[C]way

Let's have a [D]date, [Am]darlin', come [F]on girl let's [C]play

It's so [F]nice to be a-[C]lone with you, such a [G]rare and a wonderful [C]thing

So [F]snuggle up a little [C]closer girl, let's [Am]have ourselves a [G]fling . . .

Let's have a [C]date, [Am]darlin', while the [F]kids are a-[C]way

Let's have a [D]date, [Am]darlin', come [F]on girl let's [C]play

{eoc}

A few [C]years ago on a [Am]Friday night, we would be [F]out on the [C]town

[G]You and me in the [Am]big city just [F]sportin' it all a-[C]round

We would [C]hit the clubs. [Am]lookin' cool, [F]kickin' up our [C]heels

Yeah we [D]looked so tough [Am]cruisin' round in my [F]home-built hotrod [C]wheels

{soc}

Let's have a [C]date, [Am]darlin', while the [F]kids are a-[C]way

Let's have a [D]date, [Am]darlin', come on [F]girl let's [C]play

{eoc}

Well [C]nowadays we [Am]get around in af-[F]fordable family se-[C]dans

A [D]hotrod just don't [Am]get it when you're [F]on the family [C]plan

Hey but [C]that was then, [Am]this is now and our [F]lives they have pro-[C]gressed

So [D]many things to [Am]think about, it's so [F]easy to get [C]stressed

{soc}

Let's have a [C]date, [Am]darlin', while the [F]kids are a-[C]way

Let's have a [D]date, [Am]darlin', come [F]on girl let's [C]play

{eoc}

The [C]kids need stuff, our [Am]jobs are hard, and the [F]bills sure need to be [C]paid

And If I [D]had to do it [Am]all alone I [F]sure would be a-[C]fraid

But [C]darlin' we are [Am]quite the team, we've [F]built a fami-[C]ly

Our [D]lives are full of do-[Am]mestic bliss, it's as [F]good as it can [C]be

I just noticed this old thread and see that it has been dormant for a while.  It also includes some names that have not posted anything to the Songwriting forum recently.

It would be great to get the people who were active on this discussion back onto the board with new songs and ideas and general discussion. . .

Helloooo . . . . . Anybody out there?

Here is an old, old traditional romantic lullaby not indexed by chordie.  Couldn't find the chords anywhere on the web, so I just figured them out.  Here it is - just in time for Valentine's Day!

By the way - it is OK to post this song in its entirety here on chordie since it has been out of copyright for many decades. . .

Tell Me WhyTraditional Lullaby, in 6/8 time

[G]Tell me [Em]why the [C]stars do [G]shine,

[G]Tell me [Em]why the [D]ivy [D7]twines,

[G]Tell me [Em]why the [C]sky is so [G]blue,

[Em]And I will [C]tell you just [D]why I [D7]love [G]you.

. . . .

[G]Because God [Em]made the [C]stars to [G]shine,

[G]Because God [Em]made the [D]ivy [D7]twine,

[G]Because God [Em]made the [C]sky so [G]blue,

[Em]Because God [C]made you, is [D]why I [D7]love [G]you!

. . . .

[G]I really [Em]think that dear [C]God a-[G]bove,

[G]Created [Em]you just for [D]me to [D7]love,

[G]He picked you [Em]out from [C]all the [G]rest,

[Em]Because he [C]knew that I'd [D]love you [D7]the [G]best.

. . . .

Here's a decidedly non-romantic extra verse . . .

[G]Nuclear [Em]fusion makes [C]stars to [G]shine,

[G]Tropisms [Em]make the [D]ivy [D7]twine,

[G]Raleigh [Em]scattering make [C]skies so [G]blue,

Tes-[Em]ticular [C]hormones are [D]why I [D7]love [G]you.

The human voice is a natural instrument that anybody can learn to play well.  Everybody knows that it takes effort to learn to play a guitar (or any other 'non-natural' instrument) well.  It also takes deliberate effort and dedication to learn how to play your natural vocal instrument well.

For some, vocalizing comes easily.  For others, it takes more time (and courage) to produce a steady tone and convey melodic meaning.  It is well worth the effort because singing is a truly joyous, expressive and sensual artform.

Don't assume that you 'can't sing' - learn a little about proper posture, breathing, vocal support and basic vocal technique.  You will be surpised what a difference a few basics (and real practice) can make.

Altex, maybe you'll never be an operatic tenor, but if you approach learning to sing with serious intent (and proper technique) your ability will improve dramatically.

Thanks for the information.  I think that I will download a copy of Audacity (free, open-source recording & editing software) and use the money I can scrape together for a decent microphone.

I have alot to learn . . .

Hello Altex - coming up with words for a song gets a little easier the more you just keep trying . . . see the 'Where to Start' thread and other topics here on the Songwriting forum.

If you want to write songs - just keep at it and have fun trying new approaches.  You will probably discard more ideas than you finish - but that's part of the fun.

Yes - having a simple way to share recordings of original songs would be a nice addition to chordie's many useful features.  Chordie's creator had announced last year that he was in the process of creating a sister site (tentative name 'chordshare' I believe?) for just such a thing.

In the meantime, there are other existing alternatives - for instance, upyerkilt (Ken) has put some videos on youtube and posted links in this forum.  Other users have put stuff up on MySpace pages or personal websites along with forum links to the recordings.

Once I get around to acquiring the necessary software and gear ($$$!), I will probably do the same.  Like you, I could probably benefit from the feedback of other musicians and songwriters.

Hello rogerguppy - This link might help with your multiple file format quandry. The site has a handy-dandy free tool that converts a chordpro type file (the format you see in chorie's edit pane) into a format you see displayed on chordie's song pages (not quite as fancy, but very usable).  You can also save the coverted file in html or some other formats.

<a href="http://www.bythechord.com/" target="_blank">http://www.bythechord.com/</a>

This converter tool works best with text files - so just re-save your Word stuff into text format(.txt).  However, if all your Word files have the chords placed using spaces, maybe this tool won't be much help . . . But, if you get into the habit of putting any new stuff into chordpro format, this site is very useful.

Also, I noticed the songbook you posted recently. It is great that you have edited those songs into an improved form.  Thanks for reminding me of some great songs!

Hello Vinton - If all you want is a nice printed copy of the song as you see it on the screen, simply hit the 'print' button on the song's page.

I need to learn about recording/editing software.  What are the pros & cons of the various free and for-purchase packages that are available?

I have an iMac so I'll probably go with Garageband (part of the whole iLife package), but I want to hear about other software options.  Also, I need to learn about microphones and other necessary hardware.

Any advice or observations would be most helpful . . . Thanks!

Great song - like your style!  Couldn't quite make out all the words though . . . You've got ambition and talent - I look forward to hearing more of your compostions.

What recording/editing software do you use?  I have an iMac and am thinking of getting Garageband so that I can be more self-sufficient in recording my stuff.  Any advice you can provide would be welcome.  I have alot to learn . . .

Yes, the error seems to be fixed.  I tried a few songs that would not show any changes previously, and these items now exhibit the improvements.

Curiously, a couple of them did not at first show the changes when I hit the 'return to song' button.  However, after saving the changes a second time the changes did appear after returning to the song.

Perhaps there is a lag time in some cases for the changes to appear?

Thanks again for continuing to make chordie.com the best source on the net for lyrics & chords!

Agreed - having a basic template to work within is very helpful.  Rather than being restrictive, working within a basic pattern enables one to have a definate beginning, middle, and end for your creation.

Other examples of this 'structured approach' to creative writing are Japanese haiku, sonnets, and limmericks.  Composers of classical music also use pre-established patterns such as sonatas, fugues, and symphonies to give their compositions a basic form.

Rather than being restictive, these basic forms provide a stable framework within which the creative process can flourish.  For the composer/poet/songwriter the benefit is that the creative process has a general direction.  This general direction does not dictate precise steps - it merely provides a context for the process.

I find that songwriting is a process of discovery.  I sort of 'discover' song ideas and then as the process unfolds I 'discover' more words or melodies or rhythms.  I try to get the skeleton of a song built first - this skeleton is usually some very simple pre-existing structure (verse, chorus, verse, bridge, etc.).

hello deshicool - I had no luck locating anything ready-made for your song on the web.  However, I did locate the blog of a Tarkan fan who can probably help you find what you need.  This fellow seems to know about all things Tarkan -

Contratulations on being a beginner!  Learning about music is a marvelous and rewarding challenge.  Hope this helps . . .

Greetings tony20, and welcome to chordie . . . misattributions are common (unfortunately).  I checked under Julian Lennon and there are 2 versions of Saltwater indexed (one version is incomplete - another unfortunately common problem).

I am not personally familiar with this particular song.  However, if this is a song you are familiar with then here is what to do . . .

Log in to chordie (so that you have full functionality)

Then, first go the incorrectly attributed version (the one indexed under John Lennon) and add a comment (see the bottom of the song's page).  Also, use the rating tool off the righthand side of the songs page - give this incorrect version a very low rating.

Next, go to the Julian Lennon listings.  Look at the two versions available there.  Rate the incomplete one very low.

The complete version may or may not benefit from some prettying up . . . use the 'correct song' button should you want to correct any layout or content errors in the song.  If you are going to edit a song, it is best to move it into your songbook first - and then make your changes there . . .
