I found this and installed it,this program is easy and fast it will print out your creation in notation and most important it opens midi files and converts them to notation and plays the score.
http://www.anvilstudio.com/

This free program is really easy to use it has midi input so you can play on your keyboard and select the notes, duration(whole, half, etc.)as well as rests, accidentals, keys and exports as a midi file to load into the above program to print out the score. way cool smile

Phill I got around the latentcy issue I downloaded ASIO4all drivers and installed them the program has a control board that lets you adjust the latentcy I will have to wait till the new software program arrives to see if I need to purchase a USB interface so far I have no problems smile

Phill Williams wrote:

russ, your experiencing latency. you may find the delay becomes a little intolerable when recording onto audacity. there are cures. is it a USB interface you are using? if so you may need a USB3. i had to buy one, got it quite cheap on the net. amazon i think? there are other tricks like taking out all unnecessary stuff like webcams cameras etc. it took me ages and the help of a tech to get it working. good luck.  phill

go for it! I have been tickling the ivorys (plastic keys) for a few hours the grand piano setting is awesome it really sounds like a piano I downloaded the free MuseScore composition program I enter the notes with the Yamaha keyboard thru midi interface its not as fast as I would like because I have to change the note values and enter rests I wish there was a program that entered the notes AS you play Im sure there is and I will research the web and see if it dont cost an arm and a leg.music is great. smile

Phill Im al little in the dark when it comes to controlers the keyboard will stay in one place so damaging the midi inputs should not be an issue I cant wait to open the new program when it arrives the keyboard will be deliverd tomorrow afternoon and I can get aquainted with it maybe even try the Alpha Ray synth the program I downloaded and check out the midi connection Im working on a modal uptempo song I created on my  yamahaPSS 270 some cool voices for such a small keyboard I recorded 4 tracks with it and I am going to add a bass and drums and when the midi arrives I can add the synth effects keep ya posted on the progress smile

hi russ,
i have a yamaha dgx200. i bought it for midi-ing to the PC. be careful of the midi out, if you unplug or move the keyboard a lot while plugged in, you may find that the midi connection gets faulty. i had mine repaired then it broke again, so i bought a korg K61p controler keyboard which also has audio piano, organ, strings but no drums. cheap and cheerful.

hope you enjoy your new gear

dino some keyboards are designed to respond like a pianos touch some have adjustable response I dont know which model you have just keep playng with it and you'll eventually improve.I play guitar but I dabble in piano and several instruments good enough to lay tracks and have fun which is what its all about anyway enjoy what your doing and have fun with it smile

if you dont have a budget and money is no hassle get a laptop (mac or Dell) with 4 gigs of ram next order some KRK Rokit 6 powered speakers I can guarantee you'll hear your pc,for recording get an 8 track digital or 24 track that burns a cd, for mics take Jeromes advice and buy some good condenser recording mic's I have a Samson with phantom power you will need a Phantom power unit if the recorder dose not have this its a small unit cost is around 25 bucks you can get all this from Amazon or AMS(American Musical Supply) AMS only sells the top products and you can find anything including some studio foam to sound proof your rooom for recording you dont need all the walls filled just some areas.with the condeser mic you will need to run a cable into the phantom power and another into your recorder and two XLR cables from your Rokit speakers connect to the recorder and your good to go dont forget the boom stands for the mic and a pop filter for the microphone. get good quality cables to go from the condenser mic to the phantom power unit and to your recorder.thats enough for now. smile

Jerome this is a copy of the reply to my email I sent the makers of Alpha Ray,I inquired about my new midi setup and what was best as an interface I think the ASIO drivers are already installed on my laptop as I have the newest release of Audacity anyway heres what my German friend had to say.

Hi Russel, yes. It it build for this. But if you use it with a keyboard and the normal  inbuild soundcard it can be that you have latency from 0.2 to 0 5 s.
This is normal if you use windows without special equipment.

Musicians take a Asio soundcard. This reduced the latency  from 5. .12 ms.
To get fun while playing you need  a masterkeyboard with usb midi, a usb ASIO soundcard, or a ASIO4all driver. ASIO4all driver works in most cases, but is not the best solution.

I needed a midi keyboard for my software program and after serching for several days I settled on a Yamaha PSR-E 233 with adapter and a two year service plan it cost me $120.00 free shipping and will arrive in 3 days I found it at Musicians Friend, along with the keyboard I also purchased a software program called IK Multimedia Miroslave Philharmonic soft synth, this program duplicates choir voices as well as all the instruments in a orchristra (dont know how to spell that) it was on sale at AMS for 59.95 this keyboard will also control my Alpha Ray synth and give me greater freedom to express my composistions with choral and strings that sound authentic now I just have to locate a ASIO driver for the latentcy issue.I am really excited about digging into this new equipment and sofware music is great! smile

You most likely will get several answers to this question,if you have a few dollars or euros to spend my recomendation would be to start small.
there are several ways to go about it.on a poor mans budget you will need a recorder 4 or 8 track and a quality microphones (Sure mic) is a good choice but there are less expensive mic's that will do to start also mic stands I have and use the free Audacity program to render my recordings to mp3 fomat which can be burnned on a cd keep your equipment easy to use and understand so you can concentrate on your performance. There are several members on Chordie who can offer advice on this subject so you need to do some research and find what will work for you in your budget. smile

I downloaded this program it has a virtual keyboad you can play with your mouse and a midi option to control the banks, this is one nice sounding synthesizer everything from strings to very modern sounds and its free I think they ask for $4.95 to unlock some of the effects but I recorded on it and it converts to mp3 which can be opened by Audacity if you would like to check it out this link takes you to the download page that features some demo videos that are on you tube I can only speak for myself I think its great. smile

I downloaded and setup this free program its a fast and easy way to compose music and it outputs to a pdf file to print there are tutorials on the site I have been trying several programs so far this is the easiest, what I am looking for is a program that lets you input the notes from your guitar and convert it to a lead sheet that can be printed I know what I really want is out there somewhere but this is a good free easy way to start.

I always learn something when I pick up my guitar and start strumming, no one ever knows all they need to its a lifelong education sometimes I watch videos of other musicians and get inspiration and encourgment to try harder to improve and if you get joy from playing then that is its own reward.

if your asking where to order I would suggest making a list of the things mentioned and search on the internet for a place that sells them I think a good place to start would be Musicians Friend or Amazon just type a name on your list in the search bar and compare prices then make a decision smile

I think as a practice aid it will do the job as long as what you loop is structured (arranged) it can be something modal(one chord minor or major) or a progression of chords (blues, country, rock) I have a Boss RC-20XL loop station and a Boss FS-6 foot switch I use this setup to record loops of song progressions for parties it allows me to toggle up or down to the next song,if you dont have someone to practice or jam with a loop pedal can be very helpful smile
