'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' by George Harrison, you get a beautiful acoustic lily of a song gilded to perfection by the woman tone of Eric Clapton.

Re: stripped my telecaster down to the pure wood. (4 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Oak would make for a very heavy guitar with difficult to control sustain (not impossible but...). Wood can vary tone but often the maker compensates with build details. In the bass world some very heavy woods are used. I couldn't believe the difference between my friends Warwick corvette and my bass. Although the Corvette body is smaller it's much heavier, my Ibanez is bulky but lighter (probably ash/alder/swamp etc). Of course in bass land sustain makes for big muscley notes, in regular guitars it can mean ringing and screeching!

Ibanez are great value, you aren't paying for name the way you might with Fender/Gibson. Alot of the Ibanez range is orientated on speed metal players but they do a model for every style and price point.

Re: What is the best flanger? (2 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Flanger/phasers fall into two basic types, those that add a tasteful bit of swoosh and those which create spacey soaring noisescapes. What is tricky is finding one that does both. Luckily this month G&B are reviewing Toadworks Phantasm, which they reckon is expensive and not very versatile. Recommended competitors though are Electro-Harmonix's 'Flanger Hoax' and Digtronix's EP1.
In some ways it's one of my least favourite effects, I was given two cheapo phasers free and car-booted them after some mucking around, but once I knew what they did I recognized the use of phasing in the Clash's 'Lost In The Supermarket' and wished Strummer had left it out!

Re: is a electric guitar player in danger? (31 replies, posted in Electric)
First off Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, various tracks were played repeatedly at prisoners including Matchbox 20. IMHO two ideas explain this;
1) The guards simply wanted to test out if listening to Barney drives you nuts for a bet.
2) The tapes were doctored with subliminal messages to encourage cooperation with interrogators.
Woodstock, two of the last bands on were Limp Bizkit and Red Hot Chilli Peppers who performed 'Break Stuff' and 'The Roof Is On Fire' respectively. However the real reason for the bad crowd behaviour may be that there was a high ticket price for the whole festival yet inside alot of the concessions were charging top dollar. The organisers had clearly assumed an older, more moneyed festival goer then booked acts that appealed to penniless kids. No excuses but a big mismatch...
Music in general does shape mood. But you can't cheer depressed people up just by playing Bubblegum hits at them. Someone who's down needs music that says 'you can do it, play the system and win' not just 'happy, happy, smile, smile'. Where todays metal bands get lost is showing how shitty the corporate world is without reminding people that they can make an alternative for themselves. The original hippy message of 'revolution in your own back yard, do it yourself style' needs finding again...

Re: 12-string bass? (5 replies, posted in Electric)
There are a few one-off instruments built by enthusiasts but a 12 -string bass isn't a real instrument. Most basses are 4 strings E A D G (alternate tunings are rare in bass). There are 5 string basses and these add a low B ( B E A D G), this gives a real booming low note (more than some amps can handle). Six string basses are also gaining popularity giving an additional high C string. Jazz and classical cats do some weird things with the tunings but for most players a 4 string bass is enough for anything.
You may be thinking of the baja sexto, used by mariachi bands which has 6 pairs of strings (I think). This is one octave lower than regular guitar rather than 2 octaves lower like the electric bass.

Re: Feeling or skill ? (10 replies, posted in Electric)
True James but most people have trouble understanding minor and major scales. I recommend learning the basics before acquiring scales that only fit off-beat jazz stuff.
I've been playing nearly four years and still don't always 'hear' the modality first off. Got myself in a real pickle last week trying to play a minor tune bassline with a major triad!

Quite a difficult song to play too. I suspect 'concrete and clay' is speeded up a semitone at least. A real favourite of mine but that does make it easy to play ;-)

Songwise, try 'Get Back' by the Beatles. It can be played with open chords, you need to get the beat then get in the G D 'dang dang'. But this is also a song with lots of extras. Look up on chordie and you'll see dozens of tabs for lead lines and the solo.

Re: Feeling or skill ? (10 replies, posted in Electric)
You've got to have the feeling, all the skill in the world won't matter if the solo lacks feeling. Think of the solo as a song within the main song, a tiny symphony. There are some very effective simple solos, Buddy Holly's 'That'll Be The Day' does a few chords and then repeats the song riff, but Buddy makes it sound exciting, commanding and every bit a real solo. Thats feeling triumphing over skill, Buddy played it like he meant it.

Re: TRANSFORM YOUR 100$ SQUIER INTO A 100$ FENDER (6 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
The problem with faking is that people check out the logo rather than feeling the quality. Once you know what a genuine instrument looks and feels like you are unlikely to be taken in but most people will never see the real thing. Logos and stickers give people a feeling of security. No matter how good or bad the finish or sound it's a Fender/Gibson/PRS. When you buy an unknown name you have to be more certain that you like the product, there's little resale market for lesser-known luthiers.
My advice is know what quality you are looking for, if you are satisfied by a model then it doesn't matter what's on the headstock. Don't let gear snobs put you off with their fancy brands.

Re: General info ? (11 replies, posted in Guitars and accessories)
Hi Maksat, you'll see loads of posts on the acoustic and electric forums about guitars and whether the expensive ones are worth the money.
Basic types are;
Classical nylon stringed acoustics
Steel stringed acoustic
Electro-acoustic
Semi-acoustic electric (aka archtops)
Solid Body electric
For a beginner I'd recommend a basic steel stringed acoustic. Great for strumming, learning open chords and getting you into proper songs quick.

Re: Remembering chords and lyrics? (28 replies, posted in Acoustic)
First off sinjin look for songs with a 12 bar blues structure. Once you get the feel of a blues your fingers almost know where to go. With a blues there's the main chord, the verse departure and then the chorus departure chord, that's just 3 chords. So a blues in G goes verse G G G G C C G G chorus D C G C. A blues in A goes A A A A D D A A E D A D A etc Once you learn this it becomes second nature and you'll start spotting songs that use it and they'll come easier.
Second - lyrics. Look for keywords you can remember that cue you in. One trick singers use is to write lyrics out by hand, the very act of writing helps you remember plus if you try to make the words long or short with the timing of the song you'll understand the structure more.

Actually Phil some Malafide persons simply erase the Squier logo then put a Fender logo decal in it's place. These decals are illegal but they do appear on the net from time to time and people do use them on self built pieces.
I suspect this kind of thing will kill eBay's guitar section, individual sellers have already largely deserted it, leaving big music dealerships and grifters. Even if you do win an auction for a decent guitar the seller's often want to meet you in person halfway, too many buyers claiming they never saw the courier...

Hi Phil, was checking through eBaY for Stratocasters a few days ago and I noticed alot of highly dubious stuff for sale. You have to be really suspicious of wording, some of the ads have 'Fender' and 'Strat' all over them but what they are selling is a no name copy, and they never explicitly admit it. Strats are so easy to build and so numerous that the market is a minefield.
I would never buy one unseen (pictures on eBay are usually cruddy, this suits the dodgy sellers) or from anything other than a bricks and mortar shop. Beware the fakes.
Either buy new or build from parts but yes there are lots of cheats out there...

Re: MODIFICATION ON AN ELECTRIC GUITAR (7 replies, posted in Electric)
Hi Phil, re: single coils/silent coils.
Strat owners are in a bind. The classic strat sound is 3 single coils, weak ones too, when strat modders talk about adding hotter coils they mean more output. Single coils pickup hum from the mains, shielding can do alot to alleviate this but it can be a real problem. In the 80s Fender hit upon making the middle single coil reverse, making any coil combination that uses it humbucking yet strat tone.
However true believers still maintain the original weak and noisy coils have a unique sound. Players like this sometimes turn back their volume knob between songs to purge out the noise that builds up.
Replacement coil makers that promise noiseless use all sorts of tricks from wax potting, to variations on humbucking. Most of their websites give good detail of what you are getting though.
