I have been playing around lately with banjo tuning on my guitar. It is tuned open G but this is how I have it set up:

The low E string got replaced with an extra high E i had laying around, that makes the 5th string on the banjo.

From bottom going up I have the strings
D (whole note lower than the normal tuning for this string)
B (same as standard tuning)
G (again, same as normal)
D (again)
G (whole note lower than normal)
G (this is a thin string and tuned high)

That means it is tuned like a banjo, but because of the extra sting on the guitar it has 2 "5th" strings.

By putting the two G's one octave apart beside each other you get a neat drone sound. It sounds really Celtic, when you hit both the strings together in a roll.

Who else does this or something similar? Any other neat tricks to do with it? songs that sound good with it?
I already tried using a slide...it didnt work so well.

If you have a bang-around guitar and an extra string laying around I recommend trying it. If you dont know any banjo rolls just look them up online, pretty easy to find. But remember it wont work unless you change the strings around.

I can explain better if anybody wants me too.

Hey man, check out Rayna Gellert & Susie Goehring...they have a CD called "Starch and Iron" its fiddle and guitar. I think its more Old-time then bluegrass though, amazing though. Rayna is also in the band "Uncle Earl" so look them up as well.

I could give you names of some local bands but you would have to see them live... the best bluegrass bands/players and those who play in the barn for family reunions and weddings. Bluegrass just was not made to be recorded, it does not do it justice.

If you want to play it, find people to jam with. You will learn a lot from very smart people.

I know what you mean.
We had a tornado up here in New Hampshire (figure that one out) a few weeks ago. One person was
killed. The local news station interviewed this rich-old-prick that lived a little ways away, his lake front camp was destroyed. He took the opportunity to go off about how the "Democrats are ruining this that and the other"
...hey man you neighbor died, in a freak tornado, and thats all you can say...

This ties right in to the thread. I make a motion to have all people take a test, if they don't know when to keep their mouth shut we should sew it shut for them. Who is with me? smile
Stupid things just make famous people more famous.

But thats just my two copper disks, what do I know.

What I think this site needs are user-made lessons/tutorials. Many of the questions in the the forums are repeats. If the members of chordie were able to make and submit lessons it would clean up the forums by getting rid of all the short two answer threads that keep repeating. Here is an example of a site that incorporates forum, database, and lessons well http://www.mailleartisans.org/ I know on that website the lessons are extremely useful, that is where I learned to make chainmaille. It would not be as good as a real teacher but it would answer some peoples basic questions.

Just food for thought. Even if you start by making lesson threads, I think it would help out quite a few people, and clean up the clutter.

Ooh, Chris Martin - Coldplay...he's another one!

P.S I actually like Jay-Z and Kanye West.....think they're two of the more talented members of the RAP fraternity and bring a slightly different slant to rap music. Again, maybe just my opinion, but that's what's fun about music.....

Bud,
For me and Kanye it's not the music (although I'm not a fan), it's the "listen to my views on politics" crap. I'm not sure what makes Kanye think what he feels or thinks is somehow pertinent to anyone else. Keep rapping and spending your easily come by dough.

Don't know much about Chris Martin but I'm sure I could grow to dislike him! I'm getting old and cranky!!

I am going out on a limb with this and i mean no offense...but if you dont want to hear somebody political views dont listen to it. Dont know what this rappers views are (i dont watch TV and i only listen to the hippy radio stations) but i have seen and been bothered by people saying this in the past. I am a folk music person, I play mostly old-time. But one of my favorite bands is Rage Against the Machine...I dont agree with all that the band has to say but i listen to it with an open mind.

Sorry about the rant and I didnt mean to offend anybody.

More on topic.
It seems, in my opinion, the bands with the least talent and creativity have the worst behavior. like they are making up for something.

i get the worst things ever, and i dont even know how... i get spam faxes. these actually cost you money too, you need to pay for all the peper and ink, we get between 2-5 everyday so its alot of paper. and if you take the paper out or turn the machine off they wont come untill the next time you turn it on, so it prints out 20 faxes rom the week and you have to sit ther and keep pressing cancel...
anyways
this is the one i got today:

Orlando!
3 days 2 nights in Daytona Beach and Ft. Lauderdale

*plus 3 day 2 night Bahamas cruise

all this for only $99 for the first 100 callers!

we got one for cancun too.

we normally get "asian stock reports"
my parents dont even know how stocks work...i dont know why we get them.

ummmmmm.......

here is the definition of a mandola according to Mandolin Cafe.

Mandola:

In the US, this term is usually applied to an instrument tuned one fifth below the mandolin, analogous to the viola: c, g, d, a. Europeans would refer to an instrument of this size as mandoliola, mandola in C, or tenor mandola (although this latter is a bit of a misnomer given the instrument's alto range). Some instruments have been made with an added fifth course at high e" to provide a kind of mandolin/mandola hybrid.
so a mandola is to mandolin as viola is to violin.

now the next question. they are two completely different things.

now the last question is one that you could get lots of answers on and whoever answers it swears theirs is the truth.
my answer:
"If you want to play fiddle you play fiddle. If you want to play violin you play violin"
in other words they are the same thing but played different...but sometimes not even that.
they are tuned the same and all, the "hardware" is the same too. its not in the instrument but the player.

if you really want me to i can answer the banjo question in more detail. but i thought that answer was simple enough.
hope this helped

no questions about the Dulcimer? smile

im not going to screw around with my good guitar, but i have shaved down the saddle on my FirstAct. it was not too much work, i think it was more work adjusting the truss rod on it actually.

if i have shop tools why not just use a thin kerf saw blade (i would use a hand saw) to lower the slots?

thanks for the replies,

i want to know if lowering the action on my guitar will help me play, i know it did for mandolin, and my action (i think) is ridiculously high. it feels that way at least, compared to other peoples guitars.

what are the pros and cons of having this done? i heard it makes your instrument have less volume, is this true...again it did with the mando.

it is not something i would do myself but what is done? do they shave the nut and saddle down a bit or is it more complicated than that?

thanks for the help

Hey there

Next up is Tool on my Mandolin mission! hmm, I wonder how some Violent Femmes songs would sound...

Violent Femmes do sound good on mado... if you start with Blister in the Sun, i find you need to use a different C chord than what most people learn first, it needs to have more accent on the lower strings.

This band has some good mandolin, i found them on myspace a few months ago.
www.jadedmandolin.com

I would not say it is easier than guitar but i think its more fun.
