Topic: Favourite cover songs, live or recorded?

Watched Eric Clapton live at The Echo Arena here in Liverpool last month, and he covered Dylan's 'Not Dark Yet' with a wonderful sound.  The acoustics were amazing that night.

That Dylan cover, with me there next to my lovely Wife, was a proper hairs on the back of the neck moment for me.

He had The Liverpool crowd eating out his hand that night, especially when he sang 'Over the Rainbow' as well.  A very poignant song for him lyrically, as I'm sure you can imagine.

You lot got any favourite covers, especially performed live, that you like?

"And on payday, we'll tear the place down.
With a pint, in our hand's, and a bash 'em out band.
Sure we'll dance, to the sound, of the rain falling down.
In our Northern Industrial Town."

I love the red hot chili peppers version of FIRE by Jimi hendrix

also a not so well known two, A brian Mcneil song " there are no gods" getting covered by a guy called Dick Gaughan ( or something like that).
the tow of them were in " the battlefield band"  I think they are only well known really in scotland but I might be wrong there.

Re: Favourite cover songs, live or recorded?

Have you checked out Dick Gaughan's website, Ken? I've not been in there for a while but he used to have a good list of songs with lyrics and chords and some midis. All good stuff.

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: Favourite cover songs, live or recorded?

Creams cover of Robert Johnson's Crossroad is just about my favourite cover..
Recorded live on the Album Best of the Cream.
Still ranks with me as one of the greatest solos of all time.

Two song I could never imagine ever being performed better than the original:

"Over The Rainbow" - Judy Garland
"Fields Of Gold" - Sting

That was until Eva Cassiday sang them.

I would add "Autumn Leaves" to your two and you have 3 absolutely wonderful covers by Eva. I absolutely love her acoustic guitar playing also.

The Duhks did a neat version of Sting's "Love is the Seventh Wave".  I like that.

However, I think my favorite cover is Luther Allison's version of the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want".

Granted B chord amnesty by King of the Mutants (Long live the king).
