Topic: "Gonna Gotta"

Here's a little 3-chord twanger that has no aspirations to be deeply meaningful - just a simple little diversion suitable for thrashing and howling:

Gonna Gottaby, James McCormick, March 8, 2007

I'm gonna [G]move but I'm not gonna dance,

I've gotta [C]try but I won't take a chance

I'm gonna [D]sprint, but you can't make me run,

I've gotta [C]grin but I won't have [G]fun

[C]Do as I say don't do as I do,

It [G]might be false but it's gotta be true

[C]Do as I may don't do like I might,

[D]Later on today it's gonna be tonight

I'm gonna [G]listen but I'm not gonna hear,

I've gotta [C]cry but I won't shed a tear

It's gonna [D]hurt but I won't feel pain,

I've gotta [C]bitch but I won't com-[G]plain

[C]Do as I do don't do as I say,

[G]Don't let reality get in my way

[C]Do as I might don't do as I may,

[D]Later on tonight it won't be today

I'm gonna [G]read but I won't understand,

I'll be-[C]lieve but I won't pretend

I'm comin' [D]back but I won't return,

I've gotta [C]study but I'm not gonna [G]learn

[C]Do what you know don't try nothin' new,

Keep your [G]head in the clouds and don't get the blues

[C]Do it in a circle do it all straight,

There's [D]plenty of time it's already too late

I'm gonna [G]spend so that I can save,

I've gotta [C]act but I won't behave

I'm gonna [D]slice but it ain't gonna cut,

I've gotta [C]need but I can't say [G]what

[C]Do it forthe money do it all for free,

Do it [G]all for yourself do it all for me

Do it [C]up on the roof do it out in the yard,

[D]Do it really soft and do it really hard

I'm gonna [G]burn but I'm not gonna crash,

I've gotta [C]buy but I don't got the cash

I'm gonna [D]ride but I don't have wheels,

I've gotta [C]take it but I'm not gonna [G]steal

[C]Do it for your country hey do it for the kids,

[G]Get it all done before they open up the bids

[C]Do it slow and steady do it under stress,

[D]Do it nice and neat just make a big mess

I'm gonna [G]eat but I'm not gonna dine,

I've gotta [C]write but I'm not gonna sign

I'm gonna [D]swallow but I'm not gonna chew,

I've gotta [C]lie but it's gonna be [G]true

[C]Do as I say don't do as I do,

[G]What in the world has gotten into you

[C]Do it like a baby do it like a pro,

[D]Do it right now hey [C]I' gotta [G]go!

Re: "Gonna Gotta"

Okay, I took a look but adjusted it a bit so see what you think:

I played as written but thru in a D on "fun" not G

and in the chorus I added a C7 on "tonight"

I continued on through out the song with these "adjustments" and it sounded almost "Back in the USSR"-ish if you know what I mean

Played at a pretty thumping pace it sounds hot

Re: "Gonna Gotta"

Yep! Very good idea for improved chord set - it needs something to break it up and give it more form. Perhaps a bridge or two would also improve the overall flow? Thanks, James

Re: "Gonna Gotta"

Hi James,

I gave it a thrash and a howl (being careful not to break any strings this time) and generally had fun with this song. Luckily the neighbours were out so I could 'let rip' without worrying about bothering anyone. It is a bit of a change from your recent songs and I did like it, thank you.

Re: "Gonna Gotta"

great song james.

I am sitting wae me guitar the noo playing it ( well i did stop to type this)

I think the D at the end of the verse is better than the G too but I cannot fit a C7 in the chorus.

this will be another one that there will be many ways to make one song sound. But I am playing this at fast pace too.

I am wishing I had an electric guitar with lots of distortion just to see how it sounds, with an amplified voice with a bit of chorus though for effeects

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: "Gonna Gotta"

Okay....more playing with your song and I think the C7 (I added in the chorus) fits better with a G right after. Then it rolls back into the verses better. And adding a break might be good as you say. But it's a pretty fun song to play loud

Re: "Gonna Gotta"

You're right Ken, this song can be played many different ways. All of the ideas here would work - I can also hear it in a sort of Jerry Lee Lewis 'Great Balls of Fire' style.

My idea was just to write something with a rhythmic drive with lyrics that could be belted out in a barrage of words. The words don't necessarily have any meaning.

Perhaps the lyric is inane, but it seems to have just enough familiar phrases to almost make sense and maybe hint at some real meaning.

Have been scribbling down some ideas for bridges - should have something in a day or two. Meanwhile, y'all just do with it what you will . . .

Re: "Gonna Gotta"

Gret lyrics!!!! I plan on useing it as a punk song sometime if it's ok with you. Really like your word-play

on this one and with only three chords a person can do so many different things with it. Luv it!!!!!

"Nobody paints by ear so why would I play guitar by sight?" hmm

Re: "Gonna Gotta"

Thanks badeye and american chaos theory! Glad you like the lyric - I can definately see "Gonna Gotta" as a punk song . . . have at it and enjoy. James
