Topic: Drive a Different Road

This is a Dylan style bluesy ranting kind of song. A little wordy with lots of harp and blusey lead in the breaks. I'm also toying with putting in a bridge, but don't want it to be too wordy. smile
Cheers

Drive a Different RoadKen Peters May 16 2010

[E]Moving to LA, I made a pit stop in El Paso.

[E]This freaky dude approached me and he offered me some grasso.

[E]He whispered to me cautiously this bud will do you right.

[A]One hit will knock your socks right off, one toke will rock your night.

[A]It's a special blend of mellow and I call it Texas Yellow, it's a [B7]bomb.

I know

[E]Jimmy smokes crack but I don't care,

[E]He's a freak show on his own.

[E]Existing in the dirty shadows,

[E]Jimmy's mind is blown.

[E]Shaky hands and rubber bands.

[E]Needle tracks his skinny thighs.

[E]Got to keep on looking got to get another high.

[A]So Ilooked up to this freaky dude.

[A]I stayed calm and in [E]control.

I said[B7]thanks but really no thanks man,

[A]You see I Drive a Different [E]Road.

[E]Half way to LA, I stopped in Phoenix Arizona.

[E]This sexy girl approached me just to show me what she's made of.

[E]She smiled at me alluringly then winked and gave a sign,

[A]One hundred bucks will get you where the warm sun never shines.

[A]I'm a special blend of pleasure, I'm a rocking desert treasure, I'm a [B7]bomb.

I know

[E]Jasmine likes to hook for cash.

[E]She stalks the dim lit night.

[E]Looking for a John to please,

[E]A lover at first sight.

[E]Cheap perfume and motel rooms,

[E]She shares her tawdry wares.

[E]Got to keep on hooking cause there ain't no one that cares.

[A]So I looked back to this sexy girl.

[A]I stayedcalm and in [E]control.

Many [B7]thanks but really no thanks Ma'am

[A]You see I Drive a Different [E]Road.

[A]I made it to LA and I was finally settled in.

When my [E]neighbor dude knocked on my door, he's pushing drugs and sin.

I'll [A]get you anything you want, I'll get you what you need.

I'm [B7]down the hall, just through the wall, Oh man just ask and you'll [E]receive.

[B7]

[E]Now I dig faded worn out blue jeans.

[E]I dig rocking songs.

[E]I dig a plain white tee shirt man,

[E]I dig my hair worn long.

[E]I dig smoking cigarettes,

[E]I dig a knock down fight.

[E]But I don't dig those pushers keep those hookers out of sight.

So I [A]looked out to my neighbor dude.

[A]I stayed calm and in [E]control.

I said [B7]thanks but really no thanks man.

[A]I Drive a Different [E]Road

Many [B7]thanks but really no thanks.

[A]I Drive a Different [E]Road.

Re: Drive a Different Road

Hey Kenny - I think I got the feel for it but will have to hear to be sure. Great song though and a picture clear statement about the world we live in.

Howdy Wayne smile
I hear ya there on the wrong road as that was the road I took in my younger days. I was one of those guys that went straight ahead when I came to the fork in the road. lol

Thanks for read and comments. smile

Hey Selso smile
I did a re-write on the lift in the song. I hope I didn't wreck it.
Have a boo and let me know what you think, I'm still struggling with recording so it might be awhile yet.

Appreciate the enthusiasm  smile

Re: Drive a Different Road

Great song Kenny. Good job. Have to say the lyrics carry plenty of resonance here in the UK too!!

All I got, is a red guitar, three chords and the truth

Re: Drive a Different Road

Good one Kenny. You have recorded before so how about this one my friend, we are all waiting smile.

Re: Drive a Different Road

I like the "to each their own" concept in the lyrics!  It is often hard not to run with the pack and to drive that different road.  I like it, but like others have said, listening to it would probably really make it "sing" to me.  Good job!

Re: Drive a Different Road

Hi Roger smile
I'll be working seriously at figuring out Cubase in a few weeks time. I'll be on holidays then and won't have work on the brain to bog me down. smile I'm also looking at picking up a descent mic (Shur57 or 58). It won't make my voice purdy...but it'll help some what.

Cheers and Thanks for the read and commenting smile
PS...I haven't got your package yet. I hope it didn't get lost in the mail sad

Hiya BV smile
As a younger lad that was the road I drove, thankfully I made it this far and can look back on it as lesson learned.
My gear is minimal and I am presently figuring out Cubase as my other recordings were done on Audacity. (Good Freeware Program for recording, Check with Russ on that) I figure I had the smarts for learning it but I was wrong on that count (too many brain cells lost in my youth lol) Any who hopefully something soon.

Cheers and Thanks for the time and comments smile

Re: Drive a Different Road

Kenny I think you did really well on this one!  I like how the lyrics flow, and it's got a nice meaning to it and reality.  Keep us updated on when you get it recorded!  smile

Hi MKM smile

Thanks for the read and comments. I'm guessing when I get it recorded it won't sound anything like what I got in my head but it'll be a fun one to get into.

Cheers and Thank Again smile

Hiya Buvvy smile

Thanks my friend. Years of too much partying led to a spaced out and somewhat vivid imagination. lol Thankfully there's Spellcheck or you wouldn't be able to read this.

Cheers, Muchly Appreciated smile

P.S.  I have been trying to return your Email but it keeps coming back? Everything OK on your end?

Re: Drive a Different Road

Hi Ken, i noticed that you joined Chordie 3 days after i did. I have also noticed that you are an honoured member and that i am a senior member. Does this mean that i am OLDER than you. I turn 63 on June 2. [dangerously close].  Do i call you sir, or do you call me sir. I think that an honour title carries more clout than a mere senior title. What's your take on the situation. Keep well and power to your creative pen.  --  LOL

So good as always  crazy Kanook!.

You give such imagery in your lyrics sir, it condenses  like a short film.

Super stuff, i look forward to hearing this recorded also.

Thank You kindly for the read and your kind words. I hope to start recording ver-r-r-ry soon when my holidays kick in.

Cheers and Thank You for all your help along the way. smile

Hey buvvy, I turn 56 or 57 Oct 14 so I guess we are both seniors. lol

You can call me anything you want, just don't call me late for last call.

Cheers my friend.

Re: Drive a Different Road

hi kenny,

been away my friend so now i'm seeing this. it did make my laugh, i chuckled till my chuckle muscle cramped.

very tongue-in-cheek. excellently written. it doesnt need a bridge in my opinion but to diversify it a bit you could maybe change key for a solo. it would be interesting if you went down a semi-tone? or just added an alternate chord sequence? just thoughts, not criticism.
is this the product of a miss-spent youth?

hope your well over there in canada.

phill

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: Drive a Different Road

Howdy Phill smile

Thanks my friend for the read and comments smile Should I ask the Misses where your "Chuckle Muscle "is? lol Now you got me laughing..Ha-ha-ha.
Big time thanks for the input on the bridge. I plan to (Yes I know...plan to) get into it shortly and this will be number two to do right after "No Answers". In my quest to get this done I'll be counting on your input as I like the idea of a musical bridge but at the same time I like the idea of the lyrics I got in store.
Actually this is a product of an over imagination probably due to time on my hands...OK maybe a touch of miss spent youth. lol

Thanks Again Me Friend

Cheers smile
