Topic: A Walk in the Woods

Okay, the weather is starting to get better and it kind of got me itching for a hike in Shenandoah, our local national forest. The song says it all:
Edited to update how I'm playing it now...

A Walk in the Woods By Jeff Gilpin

March 21, 2007

Verse 1

[A6]I can smell the [Cmaj7]forest as the [F7]sun shines [Cm]on my perfect [A6]dream [Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

I [A6]hear the birds [Cmaj7]chirping and [F7]leaves being [Cm]blown by a gentle [A6]wind[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

The [A6]sunlight shining [Cmaj7]through the trees [F7]appears like a[Cm]nother world I'm [A6]seeing [Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

As I'm [A6]carried a[Cmaj7]long by this [F7]fabled [Cm]path I call my [A6]friend[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

Verse 2

[A6]If you walk [Cmaj7]enough you'll [F7]find a little [Cm]magic on the [A6]trail[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

Al[A6]though you never[Cmaj7]can [F7]really pre[Cm]dict what that may [A6]be[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

A [A6]fawn in a [Cmaj7]clearing or a [F7]mama[Cm]bear and her [A6]cub[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

I [A6]take it all [Cmaj7]in and [F7]marvel at the [Cm]wonders I [A6]see[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

Chorus

It's [Cmaj7]just a [F7]walk in the [A6]woods

[Cmaj7]Not that [F7]big a [A6]deal

Where [Cmaj7]water's the [F7]sweetest drink [A6]around

It's [Cmaj7]where [F7]I can re[A6]lax

And [Cmaj7]where [F7]life is all to [A6]real

And [Cmaj7]where all through [F7]summer I'll be [A6]found

Verse 3

[A6]Until you make it to the [Cmaj7]summit of [F7]Grandfather [Cm]Moun[A6]tain[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

Or [A6]climb Old [Cmaj7]Rag way [F7]up to the [Cm]top one after[A6]noon[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

And [A6]standing atop these [Cmaj7]ancient rocks and [F7]seeing for miles and [Cm]miles and miles and [A6]miles[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

[A6]While you wonder [Cmaj7]why it [F7]took so long and [Cm]staring round like a [A6]loon[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

Chorus

It's [Cmaj7]just a [F7]walk in the [A6]woods

[Cmaj7]Not that [F7]big a [A6]deal

Where [Cmaj7]water's the [F7]sweetest drink [A6]around

It's [Cmaj7]where [F7]I can re[A6]lax

And [Cmaj7]where [F7]life is all to [A6]real

And [Cmaj7]where all through [F7]summer I'll be [A6]found

Verse  4

[A6]You'll see wondrous [Cmaj7]sights [F7]wandering [Cm]along the Appalachian [A6]Trail [Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

[A6]Called the A.[Cmaj7]T. by [F7]many who've [Cm]come and [A6]gone[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

[A6]And I've come and [Cmaj7]gone [F7]too many [Cm]times to [A6]count[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

[A6]You can put your [Cmaj7]money on [F7]me being [Cm]back before too [A6]long[Cmaj7] [F7] [Cm]

Chorus

It's [Cmaj7]just a [F7]walk in the [A6]woods

[Cmaj7]Not that [F7]big a [A6]deal

Where [Cmaj7]water's the [F7]sweetest drink [A6]around

It's [Cmaj7]where [F7]I can re[A6]lax

And [Cmaj7]where [F7]life is all to [A6]real

And [Cmaj7]where all through [F7]summer I'll be [A6]found

It’s [Cmaj7]just a [Fmaj7]walk in the [A6]woods

It’s [Cmaj7]where [Fmaj7]I can re[A6]lax

[A6]You’ll see wondrous [Cmaj7]sights [Fmaj7]wandering [Cm]along the Appalachian [A6]rail

[A6]Called the A.[Cmaj7]T. by [Fmaj7]many who’ve [Cm]come and [A6]gone

[A6]And I’ve come and [Cmaj7]gone [Fmaj7]too many [Cm]times to [A6]count

Re: A Walk in the Woods

Again, Jeff, you have zeroed in on another great song idea and created a lovely musical postcard!  I also enjoy the quiet splendor of the woods.

The scenery in Mississippi might not be as dramatic as the Shenandoah Mountains, but the woods are alive with wonder.  I love getting out to a quiet place to just sit down to listen and look.  Never a dull moment - it's good for the soul.  James

Re: A Walk in the Woods

Thanks James. I was going to add a little variety to the music but  I really like the chord sequence, kind of lazy and sleepy which is just like how I feel right after I get done with a tough hike. So what I do in the song is I get a little funky with the singing to kind of spice it up but still keep it kind of sleepy. My wife says it sounds kind of Michael Franks like but I don't think it so. His stuff is written for the keyboard and pretty tough to play on the guitar. In this song the toughest part for me is when I switch from Fmaj7 to Cm, it's a little tricky but helps me because I have a tough time switching to barred chords anyway. Oh yeah, I didn't put it in the song because I wasn't sure exactly how I was going to play it at first but I repeat the A6, Cmaj7, Fmaj7, Cm after every line, just the music that is, but I sing the chorus straight through. I also echo the "miles and miles" part when I repeat the music which is the only execption if you know what I mean. When I went back to edit and add it it messed up the song a bit so I didn't save my changes. I will be playing that song after my first day hike this year but not sure when that will come. Thanks for the feedback and glad you liked it. I will record it soon too I promise but like I said to Steve I've got to figure out the s/w first.

Re: A Walk in the Woods

Hi Jeff,

I was just coming to post a message that I was struggling getting this song to sound right, and then I read your last message to James. I went back and added the extra chord and bingo, it worked.

I liked the song and the lyrics remind me of many walks I have taken through woodland. My feeling, however, is that it could do with some variation in the chord sequence particularly now I have added some more, although I have to agree with you that it is a lovely progression that suits the mood of the song. This is only my opinion, I hasten to add, and I may well change my mind when I hear it as you intended it.

Re: A Walk in the Woods

I think you'd like it the way I sing it, that is if I don't dork up the lyrics too much. The idea is that I add variation to how I sing the lyrics. The music at least for this song is more constant through out. Just trying new stuff. I've been listening to other songs and saw a few uses of that and thought I'd give it a go.

Re: A Walk in the Woods

love the lyrics but as i'm not that clever and so i cannot play it as the chords are a bit tricky for my little fingers.lovely words tho.

Re: A Walk in the Woods

Hey Donna,

I'm anything but clever but I liked the sounds of the chords when played together so the trick is this. Start on A6 which is xx2222; then to Cmaj7 which is x32000; then to the first tricky chord the FMaj7 which is x33210;

then the next tricky chord the Cm which is x13321 and then back to the A6. The Chorus is pretty simple with the only tough chord being the Fmaj7. For the verse I just slid my hand up the neck and over from the Fmaj7 to the Cm and it does take a little getting use to. Sometimes I miss the A string on the Cm which makes it xx3321 which still sounds pretty good. Give it a try and see what you think.

Re: A Walk in the Woods

The imagery on this one is absolutly beautiful!

"Nobody paints by ear so why would I play guitar by sight?" hmm
