Topic: Pickguard materials

Not sure if I showed you my lap steel before https://flic.kr/p/eh31hB

I need to change the pickup mount cos its too bulky (and possibly in the wrong place).

What kind of pickguard material do you think would look good with the coulour of the wood? (black/white/black, plain white, pearly white, fake tortoise-shell...?).

Re: Pickguard materials

flester, tried to open up your photo link but couldn't see the photo. As for the pickguard material, do you even need it? Never known a lapsteel player to do any hard and fast strumming, just controlled fingerpicking and slide work. So why cover up (again couldn't see the photo) a good looking piece of wood? Just my thought's but if you do decide to install a pickguard use a material color that will complement the finish of the lap steel.

NELA, you're missing out on a really cool pic if you can't see that!  Flester, that's COOL!  So you're talking about a pickguard just to clean up the look?  Since the fingerboard is black, I think I'd stick with black for continuity, tho tortoise-shell would look good too and maybe combine the white/cream/black of the individual pieces together and just meld the whole look.  Neat "guitar"!
