Topic: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

yep that's right, you see last weekend the family drove up to Birmingham England for bank holiday weekend to visit my oldest granddaughter and her partner. on Saturday we decided to take the train to Stratford-upon-Avon, of course i wanted to visit the bards home. there was some kind of fate/gala thing going on so we went to the canal then into the park area to play a few games with the kids. during a game of rounders, sort of like baseball but lower key, much lower key, granddad here went to catch the ball and took a tumble, i thought i could do a barrel roll and land on my feet as i used to do when i was 26. instead i landed heavily on my shoulder and they called an ambulance which took me to Warwick hospital where they told me i hadn't broken my collar bone but i had dislocated it and it was plain to see as it protruded from my shoulder by 2 inches! i was then told it could not be manipulated back into place as it was completely out of joint, so an operation would be needed....arghhh! but as it was bank holiday the fracture clinic was closed and come back Tuesday for an assessment. i told them i go home on Monday so they said go to your local a&e so they can sort you out there.
it all means that i cant drive, i have to eat with one hand and get someone else to cut up my food. worst of all....i cant play guitar as it's my right shoulder. one good thing is my wife has to wash me down in the shower...every cloud?

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

Dear me Phill - I hope you get it sorted out and healed up quickly.

In the U.S. they'd have called the orthopedic surgeon on call to come and get that taken care of on the spot, but if your insurance wasn't good you'd be paying for the privilege a long time.

Hey Phill ... news flash ... you're 66, not 26! lol

Sorry about that, my friend, just responding to your request. We have a saying here in Canada about how we can't do things as well as when we were young superstars full of vitality:

"The older I get, the better I was."

Hope you mend well and soon, Phill.

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

OMG PHILL

I've always said you and I were on the same page ! Now I know its true sad
Tuesday I went to go for a BIKE RIDE - As I went to get on and  LAUNCH MYSELF OVER THE Bar using the peddle -(as I had done 10,000 times since I was 7 years old ) the chain gave way and I went ass over teakettle much the same as you did. When I came down the crossbarwas waiting for me.   I fractured two ribs along with a small gash on my ankle.   I can still do some stuff- but there is no position that doesn't hurt and sleep is almost impossible. Then today, I did just as Phill suggested -I got stupid -  thought I was 25 instead of 65 --- forgot I have the rib injury and while coaching my soccer team tried to perform a move -    might better have stuck a knife in my chest - it would have been less painful!

Damn Pride seems to always get in my way.  Yours sounds a lot worse than mine however.....     I wish you a speedy recovery Phill.

And may Ann fulfill your every wish - body massages and tenderness AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE !

Heal quick my friend !

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

thanks for your concern and good wishes guys, i honestly thought no one would show interest in an old trouper playing silly burgers. Jim i feel your pain, Ann took a tumble over the handlebars a couple of years ago and broke her collar bone she was in agony and a few years before that she broke a few ribs.....accident prone or what?

Zurf, we have the national health service over here where you go to see your doctor or to the hospital and get your treatment free so you don't get to call an orthopaedic surgeon out of hours...unless you're happy to pay through the nose or it's life threatening.

thanks for the reminder TF, but i wish you'd told me sooner. LOL

I'm 59 going on 29. I guess there's a lesson to be learned here. But since I still climb trees for a living, I'll probably skip class on the day of that lesson and pay for it the same way you did.

Hope you heal up quickly.

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

Phill what your going through is an echo of what is happening to me. Back in  early March this year I was struggling with pain but thought it would go away.Over a  period of weeks it got worse.  I had to take time of work and I could no longer play guitar or piano like I use too. The scans they did on both my shoulders revealed torn tendons and burstitis, . My day was now filled with pain killers to keep me going and visits to the Physio and hospital. Adhesive capsulitis is the name they  have given what I have got and I became dependant on my Maree to dress me and cut up my food so I could eat. I am now able to dress myself and use a knife fork sort of. Pain is still a problem pills every four hours help.Where I couldnt sleep I now manage to get some more sleep. Not been able to drive has not been a problem for me as I love walking to keep fit. Now I am in my 60/s I  have to learn that I am no longer a teenager.
Hope you heal quickly.
TIG I hope you heal quickly also. We now can form a Band called The Painful Trio.
Zurf here in New Zealand our taxes pay for our public  hospitals.  Though it is quicker if you have insurance then you get to go to Hospitals run as private businesses.
TF In the battlefield of life we are always dodging bullets with time eventually one will hit you.  That is a saying I hear  my family say.  My 96 year old mother tells me no matter how good your life is we are all living in enemy- occupied territory and there are bound to be some injuries.

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

Well we are a clumsy lot aren`t we lol.  Sympathy to all the injured above smile

I can add myself to the list of injured as well.  I am presently into my 4th week of non weight bearing as I  have a broken leg which I broke whilst on our annual ski holiday at Cardrona in the South Island.   Damaged myself on the first day of skiing, which involved a snow mobile ride back to the first aid center on the mountain and a ride by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital.  Told my husband "don`t say I don`t take you anywhere" ... I mean come on, a helicopter ride and he had the best views anyone could want of the mountain ranges all the way to Dunedin ... Wish i could say the same.  Anyway, a bone-transplant and metal plate with 8/9 screws put in later, and stuck in the South Island for two weeks as the air lines wouldn`t fly me home until my leg brace was unlocked at two weeks.... I finally made it home a couple of weeks ago.  Another two weeks to go and hopefully I am allowed to start walking on it (hoping that is the case).  So for now, me and my broken tibial plateau are recuperating and resting up.

I am so please I am still only 28 and don't suffer these horrifying injuries you oldies have been having. lol

Seriously, I hope these injuries are soon mended and you are back to your sprightly selves.

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

I've never really thought about the saying LOL but some of these posts really made me chuckle so thanks for that as I've had an awful night trying to sleep. I finally got off at around 7.30 so my daughter could wake me up an hour later....pain, illness, death come second to babysitting.

Peatle and Jandle, so sorry I wasn't aware of your problems and also Jim on the other side of the world, let's all heal up quickly. Sounds like Roger is just going through puberty?

Joe, you're just entering the danger zone, I pulled my ham string at 59 playing badminton...not a lot of fun.

Jeezzz Russ you youngsters got it easy; money for nothing and your chicks for free. LOL

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

All of us wounded Chordies  have  three things in common a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone that can't be broken.
Jandle I wish you a speedy recovery.

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

Good gravy everyone. Take it easy, would you? I haven't injured myself in a good long while. On the other hand, all I do is sit at a desk, so there's not a lot of opportunity for injury except for excessive weight gain.

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

Good Lord everybody take it easy !!  If we'd known then what we know now I KNOW we'd taken better care of ourselves earlier in life.  You can add me to the "injured list".... over the years I've broken 4 vertabrae, crushed a disk, been a para-whatchcallit, and finally had the chief of Orthopoedic Surgery work some magic to get my legs back. If it weren't for nerve damage I would be in a lot of pain (not all of those wires work anymore).  Took a bit to learn the limits, but can't complain.

Get well, do what the physical therapist says and we'll hope for good outcomes for everybody.  big_smile

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

Here's an update.

I attended fracture clinic this morning and the specialist gave me the great news that I won't need an op! Though I must keep my arm in a sling for a few weeks, I am not allowed to drive as my insurance will be void if I do ( it's an offence to drive with no insurance in the UK) and no lifting for at least 8 weeks or rounders which started this in the first place.
So, my best wishes to all my Chordie mates that are still suffering. I'm still in pain but my mind is now eased a little.

That's great Phill !
Enjoy the lavish time with your wife !

I am finding it very difficult to get a good night's rest - can't imagine what it's like for you !

Heal quickly my friend.

Maybe next year you and I can play rounders on bikes ! smile

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

This thread has gotten kind of funny (in a cruel, insensitive way).

My Mom and late-Dad were avid bridge players with a group of other seniors. Dad used to say that their conversations were an "organ recital", with everyone talking about their inner health issues. My own contribution is primarily my 19 broken bones (to date). I've played a lot of sports, and went at them all aggressively as if I was Superman. Sometimes I think an opponent had some Kryptonite in their pocket. big_smile

That is hysterical - great tongue in cheek humor by your Dad - I love it!

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

getting in and out of bed are still really painful especially the early morning walk across the landing...you know? and i've found the most comfy sleeping position is sitting up. where i've never lost feeling or movement in my hands, moving the arm itself has been scream out loud time eg picking up the guitar....murder! so picking up amps and speakers is off the menu for a good while i think.

i've never understood the rules to bridge, but once on holiday there was a group of Italians playing cards on the next table, all talking at once at the top of their lungs....i wonder if any of them knew what the others were talking about? 7 broken bones? i've only ever managed to break my nose. could have been when i was boxing or i when got knocked in the nose by a cricket ball.

Re: someone remind me i'm 66 not 26

here is wishing everyone a speedy recovery, having suffered a few hold my beer and watch this self inflicted injuries  and preforming health defying stunts over the years I feel your pain so to speak. come to think of it that may be what's wrong with me now ,one to many blows to the head. I don't remember ( see previous sentence )  who here summed it up pretty well with the saying getting old is not for sissies. but all this does give inspiration for a song of the month, Up on cripple creek.

in no particular order here a few of the self inflicted
broken arm - skate board
concussion/amnesia - football
broken arm - ladder
concussion - dirt bike
dislocated shoulder - dirt bike
road rash/ stiches- street bike
broken elbow- car wreck
and the list goes on, my accident rate has gone way down as I got older and wiser. so when some one says hold my beer it is me holding the beer now because its lot more fun and less painful being the first responder than the respondee.
