Topic: singer songwriter

I am a singer songwriter & have also started playing the guitar. I've only been playing for 3 months but am teaching myself as i cant read music. The problem I have is that i'm not really a player i'm kind of just doing it so that when I go to open mike night that there is some back ground, as I dont like to sing without any music. I would love to share my songs with a guitarist but am worried he/she will laugh, even though at open mike people say they like my songs, i'm still not sure.Someone i know also said to be careful no one else takes the song for their own. I do have guitar chords to go with the music i've written, but am trying to write new songs & as i dont know all the chords this is now becomming difficult. I have approx 15 songs with guitar chords. What shall i do? Please can you advise me or help in any way.

Re: singer songwriter

Hey

u sound a bit like me. I am a singer songwriter, and i started to play guitar eight months ago. I taught myself for a long time, as i could not afford lessons, but eventually i got them, and i can now write and play it. Id luv to here some songs, as i luv to see what others write. I will not laugh (i only laugh at my own) and i pinky promise not to steal. I reckon that if you luv to write, you should share your songs with other musos.

too right!!!

this is why in the 60's musicians like the who, pink floyd, beatles, rolling stones, smalle faces jammed a lot together ( not all groups at once)

there are a few songs on the net with syd barrett and the beatles smashed out their faces and making up a song as they went along.

sharing is good, it helps others with ideas and even lyrics, as long as a whole song or verse is stolen.

But for guitar riffs and strumming patterns it is a super idea.

I have a few songs of my own on youtube.com  if you look up upyerkilt123 you can have a laugh at mine.

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: singer songwriter

k.

when you are writing a song and you come across a chord that you dont know and all your known chords dont sound right, why not go to a chord chart and try a fw out.

You should be able to tell if it is some sort of D or A etc.

there is a link to a chord chart on chordie.

good luck

Re: singer songwriter

Hi D.L.C,

I have just played and sung your song 'I'll Be With Those Angels' and I enjoyed it, thank you. I did however have a little difficulty fitting the lyrics to the melody in places but that may just be my interpretation and style of performing it. If you are able to record it why not put it on YouTube or MySpace and post the URL here. I have said it before, if you give two musicians the same words and chords and you will have two different songs so it would be nice to hear your interpretation of your song. On saying that though it is actually good to hear a completely different interpretation of a song.

As for backing your singing you are able to write your own backing tracks with a program like Band-In-A-Box (www.pgmusic.com). You write the chords, select the style and tempo and you have a very good backing track to enhance your singing and playing. You have drums, bass and other instuments playing along with you, and you can change instruments and the volume of each to suit your needs. There are probably other similar programs but this is the only one I know.

Finally if you want to write in chopro-format read through the first announcement of the Songwiting section titled Post Formatted Songs it explains how to write in chopro-format so that your songs posted here will have the chords above the lyrics. It needs to be written in plain text (not as a Word document) and you can always check that it looks OK first by visiting www.bythchord.com as in the resourses there you can browse your song and even print it to check it is OK before posting it here.

Good luck and keep up the songwriting.

Re: singer songwriter

Sometimes when I have that problem I go to a piano and find the chord one note at a time. Then just transpose that to giutar. It's a bit tricky sometimes but remember chords are made of the same notes no matter what the instrument. Some keyboards tell you what chord you are playing that makes it easy as you can just look at a chord chart from there and find it.

"Nobody paints by ear so why would I play guitar by sight?" hmm

Re: singer songwriter

i now have a myspace profile anyone who would like to have a listen and maybe leave a comment are more than welcome.thanks for the replies before this.

Re: singer songwriter

If any one has the audacity to laugh at your songs, hand them the "mike" and request that they sing one of their compositions. When they start stuttering and backtalkin' a "shut-to-f*#k-up" would be appropiate. As for playing, try going into your local music store and B.S. with the guys in there. They could probably set you up with another cat with the same interest. Just an idea.
