Topic: How to write a song

Lately i`ve been frustrated when writing,i`m concerned about lack of variety.
So i looked up some songwriting vids on utube, thinking maybe i`d get some tips.
The few i watched didn`t resonate with me at all,was about to give up when i stumbled on this!
This guy answered all my questions & more,i do many of his things anyway. But there were some
fantastic ideas here.all easy for ANYONE to understand. If you look at this vid, please stay with it
& part 2,you need to see it all come together.
Also i just realised he lives very near me.

I like that photo Neo and the Amber Nector on the table to help with the  music making. Looking at the neck of your instrument what is it???
EB I think his part 2worked better but part one very informative.
I will attach video of his I like it is a long song. called Touching Heads and Feeling
The song tells the story of his great-grandparents, Mariano and Elizabeth Vella, who were shipwrecked on the SS Wairapa in 1894 on their honeymoon as they travelled to New Zealand from old Dalmatia. It's now called Croatia.

Re: How to write a song

Hey Pete - Here is my two cents on songwriting. For me song ideas can come anytime, but I have to be ready and receptive to take whatever inspiration I happen to have at that moment and turn it into a song. Driving these days, I hardly ever listen to music on the radio. To and from work I'll have on news radio, WTOP here in the DC area, and sometimes a song idea strikes. I'll turn off the radio and try and wrap my head around that idea. I used to send myself voicemails on my phone but I've stopped; if the idea is good it usually stays with me now. The ideas can be musical, some tune in my head that I grab a guitar when I get home and expand on, or any other thoughts when it is not musical...people, events, stuff that brings on emotion...happiness or sadness or all in between. When it's words, I try and focus on turning it into a story, but a story can be simple or can be complex and both can turn into good songs. A story can be as simple as checking the mail, taking out the trash, seeing something and thinking about it, remembering something and thinking about it, wanting something or not not wanting something.I try and stay observant and take whatever I think about or I see and I'll see if it turns into a song, and if it doesn't then that's okay too. Sometimes the mere act of trying to write can set you down that path more often, but if it doesn't at that time it will usually keep the creative pumps primed. Hope this helps.

I tend to start with lyrics, usually about somthing I feel strong about and then try to find a tune .It's an interesting way he works and I do see some advantages. Great source of info.

Re: How to write a song

I like your "head-less" guitar, Neo, although I've never played one. What brand is it? Steinberger? Kiesel? Strandberg? I'm especially curious about the tuning stability of one with a tremolo. Steve Howe (Yes) plays a 12-string Steinberger in several songs, and speaks very highly of it .

That would be this one:

... and mine would have been the Bourbon ... smile

It's a Hohner bass - the tuning part is licenced by Steinberger, but I think they went on to produce better bridges later, mine is the B2, which was one of the first they produced, then they had the B2A (Active pickup version) and the B2ADB, here's a review of it: https://www.guitarinteractivemagazine.c … less-bass/

Re: How to write a song

Hi Jeff I like your songs and also the way you approach writting them..

Neo that is one cool looking bass. Back in my younger days I use to like Scotch  Whisky or a  Canadian Club. Now days I enjoy a pint or two of either Pilsners or Indian Pale Ales,a few beers is my alcoholic beverage now days.

Yup, that there's a cool looking bass ... and probably a LOT lighter than my ThunderBird. I honestly didn't know Hohner made head-less guitars, and they clearly paid a fair bit of attention to this one, with the various electronics upgrades. A very cool instrument!
