I used the words from the poem she referred to as the opening lines of my song.
It was from a Wallace Stevens Poem called  “The Man with the Blue Guitar XXXII” (1937) ( it's Verse 32 !) that begins with the canto:

Throw away the lights, the definitions,

And say of what you see in the dark
here is a link to the whole poem  -  https://www.writing.upenn.edu/~afilreis … uitar.html

She was such a fighter for women's rights, and a humanists in every sense.
She was also a dear friend of mine whom I miss !

This is the song

Throw Away the Lights (Please Louise)  By Jim Kenyon

Verse 1

[G]Throw a[D]way the [Em]lights, [C]the defi[G]nitions,

[G]And say [D]what you [Em]see [C] in the [D]dark.

[G]No chains [D]of words,[Em] no [C]false con[G]ditions,

[G] feel my [D] wild heart’s [Em] fire [C] lit with just a [D] spark

Pre-Chorus

[Em] The world will [C]try to name my [D] soul,

[Em]But I'm not a [C] story that they con[D]trol.

.

  Whisper oh remember...

'

Chorus

[C]I won’t be [D] caged by [C] who they say I [G] am,

[C] I’m more than the [D]lines that they [C] draw in the [G] sand.

[C] defiant and [D] different, [C]I’ll make my [G] stands,

[C]I’m just [D]the truth of my [C] mind and [G] hands.

.

Verse 2

.

[G] Shadows [D]whisper [Em]names [C]that they’ve [G]given,

[G]But none [D] of them [Em]can ever [C]carry my [D]flame.

[G]I’ve fought [D]every [Em]day, the [C] prison of their [G]chains

[G]And here [D]still I [Em]rise, [C]proud and una[D]shamed.

.

Pre-Chorus

.

[Em] The world will [C]try to name my [D] soul,

[Em]But I'm not a [C] story that they con[D]trol.

.

  Whisper Just remember...

.

Chorus

.

[C]I won’t be [D] caged by [C] who they say I [G] am,

[C] I’m more than the [D]lines that they [C]draw in the [G] sand.

[C] defiant and [D] different, [C]I’ll make my [G] stands,

[C]I’m just [D]the truth of my [C] mind and [G] hands.

Outgo - Slow

[G]Throw a[D]way the [Em]lights, [C]the definit[G]ions,

[G]And please Lou[D]ise, [C]see me for who I [G]am

slower

Yeah, please Lou[D]ise, [C] see me for who I [G]am.
