Topic: The Day Hike

I finally added the chords to the lyrics. Again, this song is about an experience a few years ago I had at one of my favorite places in the world, Shenandoah National Park. It doesn't need too much explaining other than this did really happen to me. I neglected to mention that when I go I tend to go with my family but take off ahead and lose the rest of them which is what happened on the day this is about. I hope you all like it.

The Day Hike By Jeff Gilpin

September 25th, 2007

Intro

[C] [D] [Em]

Verse 1

The [Em]path lay ahead [D]off through the trees

[Em]Over and around the [D]bend

So I [Em]followed without [D]thinking

[C]Wondering [D]where it would [Em]end

Verse 2

[Em]I was focused on my [D]motion

[Em]Each step followed by [D]another

As [Em]nature paid no at[D]tention

[C]To this [D]solitary [Em]stroller

Verse 3

[C]Gradually as [D]time passed [Em]on [D]

I [C]started ob[D]serving the [Em]setting [D]

My [G]head [D]cleared from distant [C]worries

Like a [C]fog that's [D]dissi[Em]pating

Verse 4

[Em]Yes I was on a [D]forest path

A [Em]path so safe and [D]true

And [Em]if I stayed here [D]I would be safe

But [C]if I [D]left who [Em]knew

Verse 5

It [Em]was a peculiar [D]decision

To [Em]leave the trail and its [D]safety

[Em]But leave the [D]trail I did

[C]Though the [D]reason why es[Em]capes me

Verse 6

[C]Maybe I [D]saw a [Em]flower [D]

Or per[C]haps a [D]singing [Em]bird [D]

But [G]I went [D]off the [C]safer trail

And [C]I [D]didn’t feel per[Em]turbed

Verse 7

After [Em]15 maybe 20 [D]minutes

[Em]I finally looked a[D]round

And [Em]didn’t recognize [D]where I was

[C]Nor were there [D]people to be [Em]found

Verse 8

So I [Em]walked in one di[D]rection

Which [Em]I was pretty sure would [D]lead

[Em]Back to the path I had [D]ventured off

[C]It was a [D]great plan in[Em]deed

Verse 9

[C]Soon I found a [D]well worn [Em]path [D]

[C]That I [D]thought looked fa[Em]miliar [D]

So [G]I started [D]walking [C]down it

[C]Knowing surely [D]soon I’d [Em]remember

Verse 10

I [Em]hadn’t traveled [D]too far along

When [Em]much to my wonder[D]ment

I [Em]saw a Bobcat [D]padding away

A[C]head on this [D]same path I [Em]went

Verse 11

[Em]I just stared at this [D]feline

[Em]As it traveled out of [D]sight

[Em]Such an unexpected [D]moment

That [C]somehow [D]lifted my [Em]fright

Verse 12

[C]I eventually [D]followed the [Em]path [D]

[C]Down to the [D]feeder [Em]road [D]

[G]Then back to [D]where I [C]parked my car

[C]Where my back[D]pack I did un[Em]load

Verse 13

[Em]As I sat there [D]by my car

I [Em]thought about my [D]day

A[Em]bout my getting [D]off the path

Where [C]some felt [D]I should have [Em]stayed

Verse 14

But [Em]if I had stayed [D]on that path

[Em]I never would have [D]seen

A [Em]little glimpse of [D]forest life

As [C]if from [D]out of a [Em]dream

Verse 15

[C]Life’s a [D]little [Em]like that [D]

[C]One path [D]safe and se[Em]cure [D]

And [G]other paths [D]going [C]who knows where

[C]No one [D]really knows for [Em]sure

Verse  16

[Em]I’ve had my time [D]on both paths

And [Em]both had their [D]highs and lows

[Em]Not at all what I ex[D]pected

[C]Back when my [D]life started to [Em]go

Verse 17

So [Em]all cooled off and [D]rested

And [Em]filled with thoughts such as [D]these

I [Em]got up and headed up the [D]trail again

For a[C]nother [D]walk amongst the [C]trees [Em]

Re: The Day Hike

Hi Jeff,

Great poem and it will make fine lyrics for a song. Just goes to prove that straying off the straight and narrow can sometimes be interesting and rewarding.

I am looking forward to the finished song.

Jeff,

You live right around the corner from me.  We should head out to SNP some day to pester some trout and sing some songs.

Nice poem.  I have felt the same sort of feelings in the same general area, though have not come across any bobcats.  I'm afraid that my woodscraft is sufficiently poor to notify any wild animals of my whereabouts long before I get the chance to spot them.  Perhaps you wouldn't enjoy hiking with me after all...

Re: The Day Hike

Great lyric, Jeff.  This will be dandy song when you get around to laying in the chords.  I also love to hike - love to get into the rhythm of walking and then soak up the sights and sounds and smells.  Also love just to find a spot and sit very still and let all the details sink in.

Wasn't your family worried about you?  Perhaps your wife was wondering if you had become part of the food chain?

love is life ,life is for love, keep a true heart and live life to the full....stay cool

Re: The Day Hike

Thanks you all - I have to put it off for another day due to a late night at the DC United game (2-1 win over Chivas of Guadalajara). But I have chords that I will put down tomorrow.

Hey Zurf - nice to know I have a neighbor here. My favorite walk is just south of big meadow at the Bear Fence Mt. Rock Scramble....such a great view. If you look at my current picture at my myspace page (www.myspace.com/jeffgilpin) you'll see a picture of me and the wife sitting at the highest point of the scramble there.

Take care and chords tomorrow I promise,

Jeff/jets

Re: The Day Hike

Jeff,

Very nice site.  If you would like to check out some of my adventures, you can look in on me at www.picasaweb.google.com/halffastpaddler/.  There's a few albums there.  Mostly fishing and paddling.  No music, no guitar, and no explanations of who I am or what I'm about.  But if you care to find out who I am or what I'm about, lets go hiking!  A couple of my other 'screen' names come into play there.  I also use "halffastpaddler" and "Big D".  Big D was taken on Chordie when I registered, and paddling has more than one connotation and you know musicians do have a reputation...

Re: The Day Hike

Hey Zurf - Nice shots. I do have to get back up there sometime but I bet the fall colors are going to bring down everybody and their mother. I might try to head up ther before it gets too crowded.
