Topic: {t:The Broken Doll}

on the rare occasion that i have time to myself on night shift, i get a piece of paper and write down about 15 song titles to write songs around, this is one i did last night, at the moment it's just verse as i cant seem to find a melody for it.

The Broken Doll.by Phill Williams

[Bb]she used to [F]stand there [Gm]in the [F]corner

[Eb]long blond [F]hair and eyes so[Bb] blue-[F]

[Bb]she stood [F]there looking [Gm]down

for years and [F]years

[Eb]each time [F]i saw her, i saw [Bb]you-[F] (REPEAT SAME CHORDS FOR ALL VERSES)

her pretty dress was always perfect

her hair was brushed and make-up too

like some sweet princess from a time gone by

each time i saw her, i saw you.

chorus

[Eb]but she [F]fell so many [Bb]years ago-[Gm]-[F]

[F]her pretty [F]leg was broke in [Bb]two-[F]

[Eb]the glue [F]beneath her dress was [Bb]hidden [F]from [Gm]view

[Cm]each time i saw her, i saw[Fsus] you-[F]

a china doll stood outside my reach

and so i climbed upon a chair

and as i reached to take her down to play

i lost my grip and down she fell

repeat chorus

i held the broken leg in trembling hands

you helped me set the leg back true

and though she could no longer stand alone

each time i saw her i saw you

bridge

[Dm]down my [Cm]cheeks my tears were Gm]rolling

[Eb]how i [F]feared my mothers [Gm]wrath

you [Dm]wiped my [Cm]tears, you held me [Bb]close to [Gm]you-[F]

[Eb]the break was [F]hidden by the [Bb]cloth-[F]

and i have loved you since that day

a bond between us strong and true

the broken doll our secret heartache

each time i saw her i saw you

OK so here are the chords as promised, this is so much easier to play on piano, which is why i did it in Bb. if C is easier just transpose by substituting C for Bb, Em for Dm etc. please enjoy it...phill

Re: {t:The Broken Doll}

Phill,

So nearly there the formatting 'switch on' song in square brackets was missing from the beginning and the 'switch off' /song had curly brackets instead of square brackets.

Re: {t:The Broken Doll}

i think these lyrics are brilliant Phil,
well done on yer china doll song.

I know a song about a wee china pig which was a hot water bottle sort of thing to take to bed at night. Eric bogle wrote it and funny lyrics .

When ye get the chords please post them .

Re: {t:The Broken Doll}

Great subject for a song Phill.
I liked the way you tied a fragile beautiful doll to a fragile love...Brilliant
Looking forwards to the chord progression.
I had to write down the chopro switches on a piece of paper and tack it to the wall next to my computer cuz I will forget them.Then I preview and look for all my mistakes (and there are lots)
till I get it right.
Well Done Phill smile

Re: {t:The Broken Doll}

What a beautiful song Phil.

I love the piano, somehow suits this piece.

When my sister and i were small we got 2 black delph dolls. when visiting an old Aunt of me Da's, she gave us 2  silk mantle cloths with fringeing for our dolls to  wrap them. Pink and Gold. On the way home me sister took a strop, and wanted my
gold cloth. She tugged the end of mine and my doll fell to the ground. A big chunk broke from the dolls head.
Shock and horror to see those glass eyes on elastics inside the head. She { the doll} never was repaired, laid in a press for many years.

I went on to collect dolls for years after from around the world. Only recently gave the bulk of them to auction for charity. Gave a few to young nieces. and 3 beautiful german dancing dolls ive kept for  my blessing { I hope } of a grand daughter!
. God only knows when that will be?.

Thank you once again for the lovely song and memories.

Re: {t:The Broken Doll}

You know that this is one in a million Phil..you must know that you took me there with your words What a special piece this is ..thank you

I thought ; If I had one idea,
and took it from beginning to end.
I would try another.

Re: {t:The Broken Doll}

well what a great response from you all, thanks especially to you mark for that terrific encouragement, and daddy, if you find it best suits your needs in C,F and G you go for it, i've got no problem with that.

helena, always a pleasure to hear from you, almost every song i post seems to bring another bit of your past to mind, which is the desired effect.
i wrote this song from just a title, no idea where it came from or the story itself, i took examples from my own childhood and that of my 6 year old grandson who is innocently mischievous, if you told him "dont touch that" he'd have to touch it even if it meant getting a chair and climbing!

hi kap, it wasnt meant as a love interest but the bond between brother and older sister, or the other way round, just in case any females would like to sing it.

i'll get around to posting the chord sequence in due course, it is in actual fact in Bb!, but that is easily transposed to the key of C.

thanks to all for your very encouraging comments

Re: {t:The Broken Doll}

After seeing a comment from Russell Harding I visited your MySpace, Phill, to listen to this song. It is brilliant and I will second Russ in saying that you really should let us know when you upload them. To hear the song as you intend it is the icing on the cake.

Well done Phill,

Re: {t:The Broken Doll}

Hi Phill,

Thank you for your kind words about my rendition of "The Broken Doll". However I was not intending to put it in the Internet but to use it on the next CD I record or my family and friends. Anyway you already have it on your MySpace so the thought had not crossed my mind.

Mind you I do love this song. There is something magic about it, I do wish I could put my finger on exactly what it is.

Roger

Re: {t:The Broken Doll}

Phill
This song deserves greater exposure why don't your enter it in Ourstage and see how it does.
Both Russ and I are a bit sceptical about the way the rankings are worked out but its worth a go..
Nothing ventured nothing gained so to speak.
