Topic: how do i advance to harder songs?

im an ispiring guitarist...ive been playing a year now(self taught) and i know several easy songs...im a big elliott smith fan and find his stuff impossible to play...does anyone want to be kind enough to give me some hints without telling me to get lessons cause im 16 and im not willin to pay

Re: how do i advance to harder songs?

Hi!
One thing that helped me alot is the video lessons on the net. Just google "guitar lessons free" or something like that. Don't know if you can find your favourites there but maybe you can work on your playing to get on.

My favourite sites are:

http://www.freeguitarvideolessons.com/index.html

http://www.justinguitar.com/

Good luck!

If you love what you do, there's no need to be good at it...

Some tips

Learn about chord construction (both the theory and the shapes). This will make your feel confident about playing diminished and 7th chords. Despite  their names they are often quite simple

buy yourself a chord book or find a web page (like this one) which shows different fingerings for chords

www.guitarknowledgenet.com/

if you end up in with songs in odd keys which don't have many open chords (eg the key  has lots of sharps). consider transposing. if you transpose too much you will need a capo to make sure that the register is not too wrong

Yes I highly reccomend

www.justinguitar.com

I have been on his site every day for the last couple of weeks, he is a great teacher, have learnt loads off him, and gives it all for free, brilliant, and by the way he taught Katie Melua all she knows.

Couldn't agree more Boxer. This guy's excellent and if I lived in London I'd definitely fork out the ££'s to get some proper lessons from him. His web lessons are brilliant and free though....you should definitely check them out.

All I got, is a red guitar, three chords and the truth
