Wow, i guess a topic like this was always going to get a lot of responses but im quite surprised that in 8 pages only 1 person has mentioned dire straits (and im not talking about overplayed commercial stuff like money for nothing, shudder)...man, mark knopfler's defineatly in my top 3 guitarists check out the first 3 DS albums.

Also, has anyone mentioned RORY GALLAGHER yet? no one played the blues like rory, RIP.

Rory Gallagher! I was going to his gigs While you were  still polishing up "Gods magic moon beams".   Your Plant is doing well despite the awful weather! I have it well sheltered Petal.

I am getting hurt to give this list as i have to exclude the names like Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Dire Straits and so many all time greats.

  I think we should keep aside the solo stars like Dylan, Denver, Bob Marley, Neil Young and so ons.

My favourite are probably oasis. Some people say they sound like carboard, but they have wrote in my opinion the best song ever: Wonderwall. And Noel Gallagher is one of my role models. Good idea for a topic.

This topic is subjective. Heres what I think by genre

Overall popularity - The Beatles
Classical - Bach
Metal - Metallica
Folk- Dylan, Woodie Gutherie, Arlo Gutherie...this list goes on and on
Bluegrass - Garcia & Grisman
Rock - Zepplin, The Stones... too many to mention
Delta Blues - Robert Johnson
Singer songwriters- Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Billy Joel
Punk Rock- Greenday, The Ramones,
Country - Johnny Cash
Fusion Jazz- Uzeb


I could keep writing as I enjoy many types of music and depending on my mood my favs just change. Age and location play a big role as do social strata and eviromental influences. Most musicians will appericiate many types of music and artists. I guess you can say that there is no Bad music.....well ok thats also debatable.

OK, I wasn't going to get drawn in but ....

I agree with most of Michel's list. I'm glad you mentioned Elton, much under-rated these days, forget the hype listen to the music.

I've only recently accepted that Metallica are worth listening to, I think it was krishanu that did that for me.
Classical I would agree with Bach and add Mozart.
Johnny Cash is in his own league, but try Dwight Yoakam for country. (" I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die", nice one Johnny)
Folk, Nanci Griffith, I've seen her live four times, never disappointed.
The Clash are undefinable, they did just about every style you could shake a stick at. (and did them all well)
The Ramones, it couldn't get any better.

And if like (or not) Girl Bands, give the Sugababes a go, you never know you might just like it. (Sorry I really do have eclectic tastes)

It is so strange that almost everybody on CHORDIE is going back in time. I think but I'm not 100% sure that, most of us are around the age of 40-45. About the music you hear now, I know little. This music is called R&B, I HATE THIS WORD USED FOR ARTISTS LIKE BEYONCE KNOWLES, no rhythm and definitely no blues.
My personal list was BEATLES, BEE GEES, STONES.
Later on I would have another list with Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, until I discovered the real blues, and rock: my biggest love was CCR. DO NOT FORGET THE UNDERESTIMATED GROUPS, Slade, the Kinks, the Who
