Topic: Spam

The spamming is becoming all too common. The three current topics are all spam every morning. I guess we are doing everything we can to stop it.

Re: Spam

It would be great if admin would be able to charge them a fee for the advertising space,  then maybe they would crawl back under their rock.

Not sure if it would be great do you really want a bunch of crap in the forums? I don't, almost each day I am deleting and banning multiple topics or reporting it for other moderators to deal with. I log on several times a day just to keep up

Re: Spam

Russell, your right, I don't want a bunch of crap in the forums. It's just my weird sense of humor, I figured that way all the spam could be in one spot and not have to see it, or if they had to pay for it they would just crawl away.  All of you do great job of banning and deleting and I thank you all.

Re: Spam

There is a bunch of stuff that you don't see getting blown away during the wee hours thanks to Mr. G, who must hit the keys while his morning kettle is heating. But some of it can be entertaining..... along with the wrinkle cream, weight loss pills, male enhancement products, and such, there is the Travel Tours of Ireland, Real Estate Agents in Melbourne, Lawyers in Wellington, Limo Service in Hong Kong (hookers optional), Escorts in Bankok, Bouncy Castle Rentals in Surrey, and someone who wants to chat about buying & selling used cars in Belarus.

The best thing we as members can do is to avoid clicking on their links, depriving them of getting paid for the "hits", and preventing the spread of "computer diseases" (virus & malware).  We may not win the War, but we sure make it tough on 'em.  For every one you see there are (on average) 5 you never get a chance to.

Re: Spam

Would it be possible to implement a 24 hour waiting period before a new member has the privilege to post? I know a couple forums that are "read-only" for a short period of time. A bit of a pain for legitimate new members but the spammers may get frustrated taking the time to post if it never gets seen by anyone but the mods.

All I know is that I feel as if I've won the lottery if I find a spammer and lower the ban-hammer before their sorry butt has been reported by one of our diligent members.

Re: Spam

How about the rush of Tagging, banning and DELETING their post.... While they are still online!!

then sitting back and seeing how long it takes them to discover it and leave.  Many are really slooowwww!

Re: Spam

Hey, ya'll calm down a little. Spammers have feelings, too. Until we can come uo with a good way to control them they are just gonna keep on hitting us. I suggested, awhile back, for a 7 day waiting period before any posts of new members can go puplic. That may not be possible and even if it was it may be a little long. Don't really know what we need to do but I would like to kick them in the nutz. I like the idea of sending them a bill for the use of the advertising space for their product - then turning them over to a collection company when they don't pay. If that dont work I say kick them in the nutz. Maybe force feed them some of their "male enhancement" product, tye them to a fence post and them kick them in the nutz. More later, gotta go shopping for a new pair of steel toe work boots, now.

Re: Spam

Once they figure out the waiting period they will still post, just a little later. Yeah kick in the nutz

Re: Spam

OK. How about this?

I help moderate a homesteading forum. The admin has it set up so that if a new member (one with less than 10 posts) posts a message with a link in it, that message is automatically "bumped" into what they call moderation. No one can see it except the mods. We will then look at the post and decide if it's spam. If it is, it gets deleted and the offending party is banned before anyone else sees it. If it isn't, we can "approve" the post and it's visible to the entire board.

Not knowing the inner workings of this board, I don't know if you have that capability but thought I'd throw it out there. It works quite well for us and for the most part the spammers seemed to have moved on. Sure we still get one occasionally but nothing like we used to.

Re: Spam

Now that sounds like a good idea. I thought about looking to other forums because I know it happens elsewhere as well. And somebody has the answer

Re: Spam

I frequent a sport fishing site that has a free membership & discussion forum like Chordie. In order to join and have full forum access, each member has to fill in a "registration" form, which includes a brief bio, contact info, and email address ... nothing too intrusive, and the personal info is only available to the mods. This keeps the spam to a very rare instance.

Re: Spam

Yeah we have knocked around the "temporary password e-mail to verify" idea as well.  Now we are getting bogus e-mail addresses from services that redirect mail from phony drop-boxes to edge around that as well.  Seems like every time you come up with something, they've got some way around it.

Makes it really hard to have a "open for everybody" policy, and be forced to have to put up barriers and restrictions that impede it.

Re: Spam

Got dem new steel toed boots and I's ready to kick dem spammers in the nutz. If'n there's anyway I can help just holler.

Seriously, I spend quite a bit of time over on the Acoustic Guitar Forum and you never see any spam posted. Not sure how they are controlling the spam but they got something working for them. I've got a lotta free time on my hands, and with a little instruction, I could help moderate some additional spam controls. Our MODS are doing their job very well and I commend then for that. Just send me my "Junior Moderator's" badge, point me in the right direction, and I'll try to tote some of the load.

Re: Spam

rickyjack wins the prize this morning for reporting the most spam!  They've all been banned and are awaiting section mod's deletion.  Thanks everyone for helping us out!

NELA - send Roger an email.  If he thinks we need some more help, he'll go from there.  smile  In the mean time - whenever you all see a spam post and the person hasn't been banned yet, feel free to use the report button.  Each time you fill that out, they go to a special little place where mods are informed on the site AND sent an email about it so we can take care of it.  Each section mod can only delete or remove what's in their section (like me... I can only moderate in Jamplay, song requests, chat, and marketplace) but we can all ban them and at least stop them from continuing.  If they've already been banned, you don't likely need to report because we probably already have a report on file and are just awaiting that section mod to remove.  If you see something spammy where they've been banned and it's been sitting around for a few days though, we may have missed it.  Go ahead and report it.  smile

THANK YOU MEMBERS for all you do!  I KNOW it gets exasperating to come here and see the spam.  Believe me, there are days when I just want to check out Chordie and NOT spend 10 minutes deleting junk.  However, since this is one of the BEST communities with the BEST members, I won't quit.  I won't stop.  I will continue on so that I can enjoy the kindness and guitar camaraderie.  I hope you all stick in there with us.  This too shall pass ...  smile
